ABS sensor wheel speed 00290

Featured Replies

Hello All,

This is my first post, I am looking for a bit of advice.

I have a Skoda Fabia mk1 2002. I have warning light for ABS and traction control. it is intermittent issue but currently the warning lights are on.

At low speed I get the ABS system coming on (felt through the brake pedal under very minor braking). I have run a VCDS diagnostic and come up with "00290 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor; Rear Left (G46)". I borrowed the VAG com cable and no longer have it to try to look at the module whilst spinning the wheel etc.

I have removed the rear wheel and brake disk to look at the sensor and the reluctor which visually seem ok. I have tried to measured the voltage sensor cable attached to the sensor (ie. the cable that comes from the control / ABS unit) and cannot get a reading whilst engaging the ignition and also with engine running. I am assuming the issue is not the sensor or dirt on the reluctor ~ although I am not 100% on my measurement.

I am trying to find out what to do next. I don't want to pull up all the carpet/plastic housings to try to find connections / issues (unnecessarily - but will if it will help).

Does any one have advice on the next steps to identifying where the issue is?

Kind regards,

Steve

I have had a slightly similar issue, with a mk2 Fabia and was just looking around and came across this.

So far, I have changed the sensor, this worked a bit but the fault returned. Fitted a new one, same thing. Slipped the older one back in, fault was near permanent, whilst replacement one was intermittent. As it was under warranty, I had that swapped. Seemed fine until a few weeks ago, where it started again.

A mechanic I knew, suggested that if it had a new sensor but was still firing up the fault, it was most likely the wheel bearing, on that side. Nearside rear).

I have yet to replace the bearing as it is the hub assembly complete- no removable bearing, although I guess its the same job, just a costlier component.

I am now thinking perhaps he was correct as the Covid epidemic has meant the car has remained un-driven for longer periods so I think maybe a worn/dried out bearing might have sort of stiffened up more.  No noticeable noise from the hub, no real noticeable heat build-up when driven but I have not tried raising the car to rock the wheel yet, if this would even show movement, manually!

So unless I was given a bum steer, this might be a starting point for you, too!

BTW, the guy also suggested on fitting a new hub, its better to fit a new sensor too, even if quite recently replaced as the sensor might still throw up the fault. I did think this odd but I suppose it could happen and may even need coding out but as mentioned, I have yet to do anything else.

Also, I purchased a new sensor from eBay, (carpartslink-ltd) Genuine VW part, around £20, whereby the dealers charge around 3-4 times that amount!
