Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor

Featured Replies

Hello my engine light was turned on, i read the code and it says Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit High Input. So i want to change the sensor the problem is i cant find it. Does anybody have a pic or something that shows where it is, I saw a fabia on this forum but my engine is not the same so i didt find the sensor on the same place. I have a Skoda Fabia 2004 mk1 1.4.

You can't see it in your photos but it's down amongst the pipes behind the EGR valve.

so is it in the front of the engine to the right ?

Also, in case you have not noticed it, one of the rubber donuts from the filter/cover has been left on RHS rear hold down post - LHS rear in your picture, that needs moving back into the filter/cover.

I did not see that gona fix it. Does anybody know if you remove the sensor if any fluids gona spill out?

Yes you will lose some coolant. Do it cold with cap on reservoir; and make sure the old o-ring doesn't get left behind.

Oh, and give the wiring and connections inside the loom connector a good visual inspection before blaming the sensor itself.

Ok gona check the wiring first maby something is just loose. Ok now i have looked i couldnt find the sensor before is this the sensor ?

Yep; looks like the connector latch is on the side facing downwards? Are you familiar with how these latches release?

It's not in an access-friendly position, is it?!

If you can't get the connector off with old sensor in situ, maybe just focus on swapping in new sensor and new o-ring (assuming you aleady have both), then you can disco the connector at your leisure from the old sensor with more 'loom room'.

Yes downwards its in a bad place. I have a new sensor and oring and latch. I saw a video on this i think i know how to do it but this is little tricky becuse of the place on the sensor

Do i need to fill more coolant if it spills to much?

Yeah, just top up the level again.

I'm not sure about that 1.4 16V engine version, but the later 1.4 16V version is best kept full while changing that sensor - though maybe the design of the later version's thermostat housing caused that problem.

The plan, at least with the later version BXW, is to fill the reservoir up to the top, quickly remove one sensor and fit the new one while coolant is still flowing out - doing it that way avoids annoying air locks which quickly show up as a working heater then no working heater, and continuing to drive to get the air out into the reservoir, it seems does not work, certainly it didn't work for me and I had to remove the new sensor as outlined above, a bit annoying!

I never needed to swop that sensor on an earlier BBY engine, only on a later BXW one, I'm only adding in these comments to help you out if you end up with no heat coming out of the heater after changing this sensor.

Another thing I discovered when changing that sensor on a 2000MY Passat 2.8V6 30V engine was that when trying to remove that sensor after taking the connector off, and with a cool engine, was a bit tricky as the system pressure was slightly below ambient so held the sensor in - and it was located away at the back of the engine (North-South engine), leaving the connector on would have made things easier!

Edit:- I ended up losing too much coolant as I had difficulty working out if the old seal had dropped out so essentially the coolant had finished running out before I got round to establishing that the old O-ring had fallen out and down!

That you will lose some coolant is a fact, just keep some coolant at hand and purge system accordingly.

I mean it is impossible only like halv my hand fits in there and de release clip i need to press to remove it is not upside its downwards cant reach it. I need to remove something so my hand fits in so i can reach the sensor. Maby a hose or something?

i mean it would be so much easier if the realese clip was facing up maby i just would reach it with a screwdriver but now its under my hand can never reach there

Oh I thought I am alone  facing this issue, This is fu***ng manufacturing defect I am also facing same issue every Time I open the engine cover, I have bought new rubber caps from ebay still facing same issue possible need to used some sand paper to smooth he perturbed area ,   so that it does not suck there ..

cheers

^ Happens on my mates's Vauxhall Astra. Every time you pull the engine cover off it leaves the rubbers stuck on the posts. It's no problem though, you just pull them off the posts and bung them back on the engine cover.

A little silicone grease helps.
