Should I buy one ?

Featured Replies

I am on the look out for a new (used) car, and I think the Kodiaq fits the bill, but I would like some owner opinions

I currently have a Fabia vRS which I have owned for about 10 years, but I have some cash saved up, and we need something a lot bigger, we try and go camping as much as we can through the year, and im hoping at least 1 trip to Scotland each year during the winter. The rest of the year my commute to work isnt far, so im thinking petrol is a must, im looking at the 1.4 petrols, 4x4, 6 spd manual. I like the idea of some mild 4x4 ability as some of the camp sites we visit are steep muddy fields, in fact we have just come back from one today, and the bottom half of the field was full, the top half near empty, as most cars couldnt get up the hill without just wheel spinning. Im under no illusion that this car isnt a proper off road vehicle, but I would like something that can handle mud and snow better

Ive looked at the Suzuki Vitara, but the boot isnt big enough, the Mini Countryman is an option, but really, we need a bigger boot.

Most of the ones im looking at, seem to be SE spec, can someone point out the main differences between the other spec's, do they all have sat nav. bluetooth, dab, reverse camera ?

  • @silver1011 you were right !   I now own a Kodiaq, SE-L spec, I drove home in the dark last night, those LED headlights are fantastic, i like the cornering lights too, i also love the seats,

The SE is great value, but if you're planning to keep this as long as the Fabia I'd strongly recommend going for an SE L, for the LED headlights alone.

yea, i am someone who once ive got a car i like, ill keep it forever :) i am nearly 40 and only owned 3 cars, it would be 2 likely but i wrote one off 😞

i dont earn enough to have a car like this usually, this money ive saved is a one off, my budget will be under £20k, im hoping to pick something up 2-3 years old, maybe 30k or less on the clock, for £17-18k

other points to note, i doubt ill ever tow with it, im not bothered about leather interior, ive no experience of Android auto so have no idea what it is, i have google assistant turned off on my phone so I probably wouldnt use it ? i want dab, sat nav, bluetooth, but no idea what else i might find useful ? oh and it will be a 5 seat one, we have no kids, yet, and need that big boot

Like above try getting the sel I got a 68 plate and it's been the best car I've ever had. But I've only just done 10k so others might have more info when the new electric Enyaq comes in early 2021 I might be tempted .

A five seater will limit your search, the seven seater was / is more popular.

The Vitara with a trailer might be another option.

It would yea, but I'm not a fan of towing anything, ive always just found it awkward whenever I've done it, also don't want to store a trailer

Can the other seats fold completely flat ?

Having 4x4 with summer tyres mean you’ll be able to spin 4 wheels, and the 4x4 on it own won’t help you stop either on snow/ ice it’s all down to having proper winter/ all season tyres fitted.

Do you know what other things the SE L comes with that the SE doesn't ?

Before the fabia I had a Clio which took the older H4 headlight bulbs, I swear candles would have been better lol, so I'm not against better headlights if their isn't much price difference, though I work in parts myself, if they go wrong led headlights are very pricey to replace

Me neither, I've had a caravan which I didn't enjoy towing, but I also have a small trailer which is much easier.

For info purposes only, my trailer is a Duuo trailer and the bed lifts off the chassis and the chassis is then wheeled into the bed. The whole thing then is tilted over onto 4 permanently fitted castors and can be wheeled anywhere  that a a wheelie bin can fit and takes up a similar space to 2 wheelie bins. Not trying to persuade you one way or the other, just letting you know of possible options.

Excellent thanks, not arsed about the wheels, id imagine the comfort is better on the 18's anyway and i dont think they look too small on it

Not too bothered about LED rear lights, foldable door mirrors either, i would like the LED headlights, though i dont think it would be a deal breaker

Alcantara upholestry though, that can be a ****** to clean, id prefer normal textile/cloth, but i would love heated front seats, the wife has them on her Fabia and they are great, especially as I have a bad back

Keyless entry, would prefer not to have this in all honesty, not arsed about the electric tailgate, its more to go wrong

I presume every model has sat nav ?

Thats very helpful, cheers

With your apparent hate of modern car comforts/ technology, have you thought about a Dacia Duster or similar :)

The parts availability would worry me

OK,

not me as there are 2 dealerships within 20 miles owned by the same company and Subarus are available world wide and very reliable.

I agree with what Silver and Kenny R told you above.

If they still have any on the system, you should be able to buy a 1.5 manual 5 seat SE for £21,000 brand new. And with Skoda's offer of first 3 PCP payments are free then that could take you to your £20,000 budget.

As far as I can see, the SE is easily the best value. SE-L only comes in 7 seat and you're looking at £24375 basic on-the-road price. Yes having toys are nice but are they really worth £3375?

What I'm finding is that when you take all the incentives in to account, a 1-2 year old car won't save you that much money.

I've been looking for a Kodiaq under with under 4000 miles but been unable to find anything with the spec I want hence trying to place a new order. But of the cars I did see, to my amazement it was actually cheaper buying it new ( assuming it was in stock ).

Cheers, this 3 month free thing, which a lot of different brands seem to be doing, surely its not actually 3 months free, you would end up paying more due to the interest, I even saw last night they are also giving deposit contributions on some models too, up to £4k, its something i need to look at

Just had a quick glance on site, you dont seem to be able to get the 4x4 1.4/1.5 petrol manual anymore

No. But as I said I agree with the advice you received from others. You're not really buying 4x4, none of it's rivals are either, your running about in a 2wd for 99% of the time but carrying the weight and expense of a 4x4 car 100% of the time.

I'm not up to speed with tyres on different trims so others can advise, but doesn't most Kodiaq come with Pirelli Verde something or other? Aren't these all season tyres?

yea, if the 4x4 was more important than the boot space, id have already bought a Vitara, their no Land Rover dont get me wrong, but they are very capable, surprisingly so, but I would like something that has at least some ability there

i also want a bigger car, i want some room/comfort

For those that have them what is the 1.4.  1.5 like for power when loaded up.  I'd have thought it might struggle a bit and a 2.0 TDI might be better

It depends on your definition of power, my little 1.4 TSI copes with everything our family throws at it...

20190810_121939.thumb.jpg.889312127c342c503e7a51aebacc84a7.jpg

Pirelli Scorpion Verde tyres as fitted to the Kodiaq are not the all-season version - very few manufacturers offer the factory-fit choice of all-season tyres. If you end up with a Kodiaq on 19-inch wheels and want all-season tyres, the choice is very limited - it's an unusual tyre size (not researched the 18-inch wheel/tyre choices). As others have said, in snow and ice, a 2WD car with all-season tyres will have hugely more grip than a 4WD car with summer tyres, which will merely spin all 4 wheels (loads of youtube videos demonstrating this).

Also, as has been confirmed by others and matching my experience, the incentives and discounts on new cars mean that ~1-year old cars are not that much cheaper, if at all.
