... i had projectors on my 350Z that weren't yellow lights... am I getting confused about what projector lights are?

I want whiter lights. The yellow looks **** with the LED DRLs

Projector lights refers to the way the light is focused out.

Reflector lights rely on just reflecting out the light:

Projector combine a small reflector that is hidden behind a projector lense that focuses the light into a more controlled beam:

I think what you may be thinking of are xenon or HID (High Intensity Discharge) bulbs.

Thats my blonde moment then...

Are there any better bulbs that I can get hold of then? That won't make the car illegal? Under the impression that aftermarket HIDs aren't legal

It's a bit of a grey area with HID bulbs. I'd personally stay on the sure side and just upgrade with some halogens from Osram or something (night breaker or similar).

You won't get the bright white as from xenons but there will be more lumens being thrown out.

Stealth car is my mantra, nothing too shouty so I'm less likely to be bothered by the local plod

Theres no grey area.................fitting HID bulbs / kits to vehicles built with Halogen headlamps is illegal for road use.

Existing halogen headlamp units should not be converted to be used with HID bulbs. If such a conversion has been done, you must fail the headlamp.

So, which bulbs am I looking for then if I want something closer to white?

Unforunately, even LEDs are illegal. HIDs and LEDs will work great in a projector as that's what they're made for but they have to be equipped with auto leveling sensors and if I'm correct, headlight washers too, and technically the lens also has to be made for them. Basically, for it to be legal, get some Halogen H7s like Phillips Whitevision or something that look a bit whiter

I use philips extreme power

its *******s really isn't it? As long as they are dipped, facing the right way and the right colour, it shouldn't matter

But that does not stop the glare and blinding oncoming drivers as the light is not focused correctly because the relfector is designed for a Halogen bulb.

That's got me thinking of changing the bulb's for the upcoming winter.are they easy to change or will I loose some skin on my knuckles?😀

  • 2 weeks later...

So new headlight bulbs came today ( philips X treme vision) . watched the YouTube video/ checked the handbook looks easy enough to change.however can hardly get hand's into the gap and can't get enough purchase to turn the fitment .anyone got any tips/ tools I  could use.would like to keep the skin on my knuckles 😀 thanks

Blimey, your eyes don't work at night, and your hands don't work either, sounds to me like you should just give up trying to drive and get the bus. 😆

Thanks for the constructive advice 🤔

I had a really hard time too. Perseverence won the day for me. On the battery side there is a bit of wiggle room on the tray, so try and get it moved over as much as you can.

On the other side, try covering sharp areas with rags and stuff. Gardening gloves really help get a grip on the fitment. I also use a small flat head screwdriver to persuade it out. Try and get a good viewing angle of what it is you're actually trying to do and you'll manage.

It should be a 5 minute job, but if you have man-sized hands, it apparently takes longer.

Side note. I spent £33 on bulbs and the difference is VERY slight. So weigh up whether its worth it too

Only spent £20 so not a great loss if they are not any better than the ones already in ( if I can get the old ones out )
