To Canton or not to Canton - that is the question?

Featured Replies

Having Canton fitted was a non-negotiable for me when I looked for my Sportline.

I had an Octavia VRS previously and had specced the Canton system as I found the standard stereo lacking when I test drove one.

Although, as said, it can be a little bright at times, I think it’s a great sound system. I haven’t heard many systems in other manufacturers vehicles for comparison but the Canton is certainly good quality. I’m sure if you spent thousands on an aftermarket system you could improve it, but for me, Canton is great.

We have an Octavia and Superb in the household, both with Canton. The version fitted to the Superb is far superior to that fitted to the Octavia. Extra mid-range speakers and a better sub/digital amp configuration in my opinion. I listen to similar music in both vehicles quite frequently and can compare directly.

That said, I 'like' the Canton (as fitted to the Superb) rather than love it. It still tends to be overly 'bright' and needs treble and mid turned down, and the sub still lacks punch (and don't bother setting it above '2' as it just distorts). We also have a VW Jetta Highline in the family that I had previously fitted a good quality aftermarket active subwoofer to (under the passenger seat), and despite not having fancy digital amps etc  actually sounds much better than the Canton on any piece of music.

However, it is still a no-brainer whether or not to option Canton. It's always a Yes, as I can only imagine the standard audio system would be rather disappointing.

Does the sub have more punch in the Octavia, at least from a driver perspective as it is closer? I deadened the boot on my Octavia and found the Canton sub has a reasonable punch. Looking to get a Superb estate soon and whilst glad to hear Canton sounds better, I'm curious about that small sub being tucked quite far away.

Certainly no issues with the presence of the sub being felt despite being in the boot. It channels the punchiness through the chasis.  Very effective.

Plus I reckon with the hatch design, it can utilise the enclosed boot volume for added depth.

Hi there. Short answer is that the Superb sub is better in generating bass than the Octavia and delivers a superior overall sound field compared to the Octavia. The Superb sub sounds reasonable, but doesn't have anything like the same punch as a decent after-market active sub. But you'll find the Superb delivers overall good sound with Canton, just don't expect to be blown away.

Thanks both, sounds promising then! I've always thought Canton in the Octavia was pretty good, so I don't think I will be disappointed in the Superb 🙂

In Ireland the config shows "Canton" as an option for the 1.5 Sportline AND as an option for the iV Sportline.

BUT

When you go to the descriptions - the 1.5 has the standard Canton description - 12 Speakers, 610Watt, and the "Canton" logo etc. 662Euro

The iV Canton description is different - 11 Speakers (obviously the Sub is the 12th) - Still 610Watt, NO "Canton" logo but its only 540Euro

I'm guessing Canton wouldn't allow their badge to be used unless the Sub is present - will affect the overall quality which they probably wouldn't sign off on. But it is still a "Canton" optional extra.

Easy to tell if the sub is there, you can open the side compartment in the boot. You can definitely tell it's present by listening as wel and adjusting it in the settings.

Canton is good, but you need a good source for it as well. CD or high-def from your phone via USB (not Bluetooth).

I also held out for Canton. I mix audio professionally, using Genelec monitors most of the time. I also used to be a columnist for Car HiFi magazine.

I find the Canton system in my 2019 272 utter sh1te. Shouty, squawking top end that hurts my ears. I literally hate it. One of these days I’ll stick some replacement drivers in there.

Also, if it helps, I did have the more spendy Columbus head unit in my previous Superb (before the sunroof exploded 3 months after we bought it) and the slightly cheaper one (Amundsen?) in my new 272. I think the cheaper one is easier to use and has a manual volume knob. I don’t miss the bigger screen of the Columbus.

My conclusion - avoid Canton and get the cheaper head unit. See, I just saved you some money! 😁

Yehh I'm not bothered about the head unit funny enough. I wouldnt spend the extra on the Columbus if I was ordering to spec. And i have found a company that installs aftermarket speaker systems to suit individual car. So Canton no longer a priority. They'll upgrade all speakers, install a sub and an amp. So thats always a relatively easy retro fit.

I got my new Superb Combi iV with the SoundSystem last week and in my opinion the sound is much better in the new Superb than in my 2017 Kodiaq with the Canton system. No subwoofer in the Superb but enough bass from the door speakers to play modern rock music quite loud with better tonal balance than the Kodiaq's Canton system.

I checked my order confirmation and it states Canton system with 11 speakers, no subwoofer but the badges on my speaker grilles says SoundSystem as previous posters have noted.
I really don't care what it says on the badge as long as the sound quality is good. If I did care for badges, I wouldn't be driving a Skoda...🙂
