Front Hub nut size? 35mm???

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Went to take the hub nut off with a 12 point socket 36mm and it doesn't even look to turn the nut plus a 34mm if far to small for the nut. Is it a 35mm? See pics

Thanks

What's the OD of the 36mm socket? Wondering if it isn't getting in far enough to grab the nut? Somewhere I've got a measurement for the OD of the one I use, I'll try to find it.

Edit: Looks like I measured up back in May as follows:

The one I use is a shade over 48mm O/D, but measuring the recess it looks like anything under 50mm O/D should fit.

The OD has enough clearance as far as I can see it goes on the nut fine, when I turn the socket you can fell the socket is way to big and jumps all the points on the nut. The OD on the socket is just a touch under 48mm dia

You can see the contact points where the nut is just running over the points, I ground the socket down on it's length at work because of the huge inside chamfer on these sockets.

It's hard to see from your photo, but is there any chance that nut has been rounded off? Comparing the image here, the points look pointier?

Oh, and do some comparative measurements between the 34 and 36mm sockets to see if there's any chance the 36 has been marked up wrong.

Try 1 3/8" if you have it.

Just been on the phone to Skoda and their technician uses a 36mm 12 point special socket. The top of the pitches are lower on the nut so dealers have a socket to stop the socket jumping

I'll pop out and photograph one of mine, but I've only ever used a bog standard 36mm 12-point.

The 34mm is just over 45mm dia

Sorry, no, I meant inside dims between opposite valleys or something, to see if there's 2mm difference.

Here's a photo of my right front hubnut enhanced a bit with red rings around some of the darker pointy bits.  May just be a photographic thing, but your pointy bits seem less obvious?

They're just small chamfers to aid in the socket over the nut. As far as I can see looks same as mine

Problem solved, the nut was loose. I must of cracked it yesterday and didn't realize 🤣

Haha, had me going! 😂

With the benefit of hidnsight that can be seen by comparing the two photos.

So it can! A few threads of 'unscrewedness' visible in his pic.
