Usb charging very slow

Featured Replies

I have a 2013 Octavia 3, and I have retrofited from mib1 to mib2, but I have keeped the old usb socket. The problem is that it charges my phone just with 280mA max, and when using android auto, it uncharges my phone instead of charging it. Also, I have a friend that just bought a brand new octavia 4, and he won't get more that 300 mA on any of those 4 usb ports available. I also have a new VW Polo, which gives a charging over 1000mA, so I am wondering if it's not a Skoda problem, and how can it be solved?

Pulled from Google:

"In general, the specifications for a USB 1.0 and 2.0 standard downstream port, delivers up to 500 mA or 0.5A. Also, with a USB 3.0, it can provide up to 900mA or 0.9A, which translates into 4.5 watts."

I would guess that the phone is being charged, however android auto is discharging the battery at a higher rate.

I would guess that the phone battery would last longer via the cable than if you were using a wireless connection.

Difference between your Octavia and Polo possibly down to the Octavia using USB 2.0 and the Polo using the USB 3.0 standard?  Honestly dont know as I use a dedicated USB charger from the cigarette lighter.

I use this.  I and my passengers all have android phones, charges them fine, no idea if its any good for Apple products.

I have a fast charger thst works on a cigarette lifhet socket as well, but I usualy use Waze or google maps, and spotify as well, so the phone needs to be conected to the car's usb socket. Also, my friends:s brand new Octavia 4 has only 4 usb type C sockets and no cigarette lighter, and it's frustrating to go on a 5 hours road with the phone fully charged and get to the destination with only 30-40% of battery, keeping the phone conected all the time. Maybe is there some retrofit to install USB 3.0 or something like that?

Thank you.

Have you used different cables when testing the charging rates?

A poor quality cable can cause a low charging current. I don't mean go buy a fancy one, just go buy a cheap basic one and try that too.

As for the MK3, it's probably limited to 500mA max, although you could probably hide a USB 3 charger behind the dash and do a bit of messing around with the data and power wires to make it work.

I have used the same cable in all the checks, and it was the original phone cable, that works on fast charging when pin the socket charger. So it's not from the cable! My question is if it could be fron the usb socket, witch is the first generation, and if changing it with a new one, that supports apple carplay as well may solve the problem, to charge faster. I am attaching a photo with my actual usb port, that only suports android auto.

I've never measured the current but my pixel 2 certainly charges while connected using Android Auto and streaming music via BT.

If I commute to work every day, I don't need to charge the phone at all during the week ;)

That's on both:

- MIB2.5 Amundsen in a MY18 Octavia

- MIB STD2 PQ retrofitted to a MY12 Octavia

Depending on the phone, depends on how it does fast charging.

It's worth just trying a basic charger and see what happens and also a basic cable.

Are you apple, android or something else?

It's a Samsung A50 with android. With the same cable, on socket charger charges fast, on the 2020 VW Polo i have charges with over 1000mA, and on my Octavia 3 from 2013, witch has received a retrofit with mib2 amundsen, but kept the old usb plug, receives only 240-280 mA.

Speak with @SashaGrace; I think there is a modified part need for the USB that allows USB3 connectivity to happen that she retrofitted to her Columbus unit.  What head unit do you have (Amunsden??)

Amudsen,yes.

I have a retrofitted Amundsen mib2 from mib2 still using the original usb. A cable (good quality) that charged my pixel 3 fine will now not run Android auto on my pixel 5. A random cable I had stashed in the glovebox works fine with the 5. Both phones charge ok when on the system. They are definitely cable sensitive and I've come across original cables not working before so it's worth trying a different cable.

I have tried 3 cables, the result is the same! My Skoda is from 2013, I think that te usb port is the first model, because it's very small compared to the one that suports apple carplay. I think that upgrading to a newer model of usb port will solve the problem, but I want to be sure, before buying a new port.

Thanks.

I have a gadget that goes berween the USB socket an the phone.  It measures the charging current.  When I charge my ASUS laptop or Android phone (which both use USB to charge), I get a different charging rate with every combination of charger.  My phone charges more quickly with the ASUS charger and my ASUS charges better with the phones charger.  It'd definitely worth getting a cable with thicker wires and as short as practicable.

USB ammeters are ten-a-penyy on Amazon.  https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=usb+ammeter&s=price-asc-rank&qid=1603131707&tag=duc0c-21&ref=sr_st_price-asc-rank

The cable is not the problem. I have tried 3 cables and 2 phones, the problem is the same.

Pop the 5Q0035726E USB in, that should do it :)

Thanks a lot! Hope it works, and I don't spend money useless on the new usb port, without a result.

IMO the USB in our O3 is only designed for plugging usb memory sticks, therefore current output only needed to be quite low.

Ok, but the newer version that is designed for carplay should solve the problem, right? The cable is prepared with 2 aditional wires, as you can see in the photo I have posted before!

Despite the assertions, the charging cable does make a difference. I tried several brands and found the CABEPOW supplied, JSAUX brand (from Amazon) is definitely the best. I've fitted them to all my charging systems.

Added brand

I just read back my post and realised I said mib2 from mib2.  Should have said from mib1.  I have the exact same setup as you and have no problems once I get the right cable.  You may still have faulty parts but the setup isn't the issue.

What you are saying is that I have a problem with the charging cable? I have explained that I have tried 3 cables, the phone original cable and two other cables, all the cables charge fast on the socket charger, and all 3 cables charge with over 1000mA on the usb from my other car, a brand new VW Polo with Compositio n Media. Just on my Skoda it charges with under 300mA, so I think I will go with Sasha's sugestion to change the usb part with one that works with iphones as well, because when I will want to sell the car, I think it will be a plus, and hope It will also solve my charging problem.

I does sound like there is a faulty part in your system.  The USB socket could be the issue.  Did you try it before the retrofit?

At least they are not too expensive and easy to fit.

Before making the retrofit I have used a lighter fast charger, with a vent phone holder, because I was using waze on my phone. Just after the retrofit I was foreced to use that usb port for android auto conection. The problem is that android auto is using the phone processor and is draining the phone battery, so it needs a faster charge to keep up the consumtion, at least to keep the phone battery at the same procentage it was when you have conected it to the car.

My usb charges very slow so I bought a charger that I have plugged in the cigarette lighter and now I change the phone from there. I dont even use usb any more.

Have you read why I need to use the car usb?
