Battery to boot

Featured Replies

I have my battery relocated to the boot (done by previouse owner) the car has always been a slow starter. Ive put a new bosch s5 battery in. I think i need a thicker posative cable as it dousent look thick enough. The earth is connected to the seat belt, would i be better earthing it to the spare wheel well? What thinkness cable do you reccomend me buying 50mm?

Earthing to the seat belt point??.....I'd move that....as in a crash that could spark near you....& why did the person move the battery to the boot ?..was it a race car???

Theres no rear seats in the car, ill move it. And yes you could say its a race car 350 hp

50mm sounds good.

I doubt it matters much where you earth it to as long as the wire from the negative terminal is thick and well connected to the bodywork.

Not for long, I'd be surprised if it even makes 300.

You're a bit new to this, but on the forum we've seen it all a hundred times before.

Whatever floats your boat, like I said, it won't last very long.

There will be a voltage drop caused by the length of cable. You will need to go 50mm2 on the positive side and a really decent short run earth strap will need bolted really well !

An anchor plate from a set of seatbelt harnesses welded to the floor is an ideal solution !

This sort of cranking current in the passenger compartment needs careful consideration - ideally a battery box and make sure the battery is secured correctly

Last thing you want is a battery breaking loose in an accident

- if you go see an agricultural vehicle spares outfit they will supply proper cables and earth straps !

The RAC MSA Blue Book is very handy Good enough to race/rally good enough for the road !

Tenuously on topic in relation to bodge jobs on seat belts and the RAC blue book.

I saw an enclosed glass fibre kit car racer presented for Scrutineering at Lydden Hill once, either a Ginetta or a Marcos, one look at it told you it was a shed and the closer you got the more embarrassing the bodges you saw, the scrutineer had a fit when he saw that the 3 point harness upper mounting was attached to the roll cage by a jubilee clip I kid you not! :o

My dad was a rally scrutineer here in Ireland in the 80s and 90s - some death traps were weeded out and rightly so ! I could tell a story or 2 about bodges 😂

Sorry for the off topic again !! I agree with sepulchrave after having witnessed a supposed 340bhp Golf Mk4 which was cowboy mapped let go in a big way ! Let's think things through shall we ?
