Google Maps rapid zoom in & out CarPlay Columbus

Featured Replies

Hello

When I use Google Maps through CarPlay, the map screen constantly zooms in and zooms out really fast for the duration of any journey.

It's not the standard auto zoom when you approach a junction or roundabout, this is a bug but unsure where and what.

There's no way of contacting Google so I thought I would ask on here if anyone else has experienced this so I can do a process of elimination.

If you manually zoom in or zoom out using the arrow keys on screen, this temporarily alleviates the issue but doesnt get rid of it.

Unfortunetaley the constant zooming in and out is really distracting and I find unusable.

Running the latest iOs on iPone 7, Columbus Infotainment.

Has anyone esle experienced this? Very short clip attached.

I'd start by cleaning the screen?

Brilliant! :laugh::laugh:

I have the same issue. It’s annoying to the point you cannot use it at all. Would be very happy if someone can help out on this.

Noticed the same thing. Using Waze instead

No such issues when using Google Maps through Android Auto.

I think the problem is with the GPS on the phone. When I use Waze, I noticed that the speed jumps between correct one and 10km/h lower one. Google Maps uses speed to determine the zoom level. They should add a longer delay between the speed changing and the zoom change.

I've used an iPhone 7 and now a SE and it happens on both models

I need to do a process of elimination by testing my SE phone in a different car at the same locations.

Just a shame Google are completely uncontactable!

Hello, I’ve tried three phone in my car and all do it yet the same phones in a VW polo dont!

I’ve emailed SKODA UK who have said I need to take to dealership. My car is booked in next Monday for a recall and they are going to look at it then. They did say there was an update to the infotainment system but I’m betting that doesnt fix it! Expecting the needle in a haystack scenario but I will let you know

cheers

Thanks. Yes, please let me know how you go. I’m booked in for my first service in a couple of weeks and it’d be good to get some feedback before I go in. Cheers

Hey Roo2, was about to ask what phone are you using but just read above.

You will love this; Pulman Skoda (Durham) just left a message to say my car is ready and the Comumbus system is fine, its my phone which is at fault!

I rang back and ended up speaking to a "technician" who said he'd been asked to look at the native sat nav system. I was furious. I've had the car since last September and this problem is going nowhere fast and it seems nobody can offer any firm advice or direction. Even Skoda said it needed to be sent to a dealer to check. The car has been with them since 8am this morning.

I explained the phone is a brand new iPhone 12 Pro Max. It also done the same crazy zoom in and out in December when I had a works iPhone SE and before that in October when I had a iPhone 7. The problem even existsed when I tested my daughter's iPhone 8.

I have tested my phone 12, the SE, an iphone 8 and an iPhone 7 in my wife's car (a VW Polo) and it all works fine.

But according to Pulman - "it's my phone"

If there was a way to contact Google I'd try that. The forums say my question is closed and bo comments can be posted. I've posted on Twitter too and not a word.

There's an inherrant problem and i'm convinced it's a glitch with Skoda/VW and the Columbus CarPlay system. The issue is probably rarely reported hence the reluctance to investigate it.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

(PS just as well it's Friday and I can have a few beers tonight, raging with "it's your phone" craic)

Arrggh.. I was hoping you’d nail it.. Righto.. Thoughts...

1. When it comes to misbehaving technology the suppliers always try to shift blame. My internet fell over yesterday and the technician did everything possible to blame other devices in my network. It’s how things are. I also fell back on the beer solution. It sort of worked..

2. Waze doesn’t do it. It’s a bit weird to use and I need to adjust my thinking away from google maps. But it’s a solution.

3. It does appear to be unique to iPhone, CarPlay combo users. Android users don’t seem to be complaining.

3a.. I’m unfortunately very imbedded in the Apple world and it’s becoming increasingly annoying. With every new iPhone I get it seems to work less well than the last. Alright the camera gets slightly better. The OS annoys me more and more every update. I’m ready to bail out and go Android next time.

I will be going to the Skoda service centre in a week or two and I’ll ask them to update the entertainment system firmware. Let you know how I go.

Hi Roo2

Think I have found a fix but lets not tell Skoda, Apple or Google ;)

When I set off, I hit the button on the bottom  left which allows you to zoom in and out

Hit zoom out once then zoom in once (so you are back to normal level)

Click top right "finished"

Let me know if this works for you?

Thanks Richmix. Yes, that worked for me this morning.

So, what does that mean? It’s Google Maps that doesn’t like CarPlay? If so, I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t care much..

  • 2 weeks later...

Richmix - I took my Superb for it’s first service this morning and used Googlemaps on the way. For the first time ever it didn’t do the zoom dance… I still reported the issue. They had heard of the problem but they didn’t have a solution. It’s rare.. I was given a courtesy Karoq to drive around for the day. No problem with using Googlemaps via CarPlay in it either.. They said it appears to be more common when using a cable than wireless but didnt know why. They confirmed I have the latest  software and couldn’t replicate the problem in my Superb. It didn't do the zoom dance driving home either..

So… My iPhone 11 updated its iOS a couple of nights ago.. I wonder if they’ve changed something in that update. Big brother watching us? I’ll keep an eye on it and let you know if the problem comes back. I don’t drive every day so might not know for a few days. Suggest you see if there’s a fresh iOS update for your iPhone and try that again..

Hi Roo2

I’m using the latest iOs 14.6 and it’s still doing it on mine, likewise the other phones I’ve tested

Had another annoying message from Skoda UK totalling missing the point so I’ve told them to forget about it.

I’m resigned to just using the zoom in zoom out when I start each journey, just going to have to accept it and probably never find out the loose link between Skoda, Google and Apple!

At least it’s sunny and warm at the moment 👍😀

Sigh.. It’s not fixed. It still zooms in and out like crazy.

I tested if it’s worse with my phone in my pocket but no difference between there or the centre console.

I’ll just have to get used to doing the +/- trick before setting out. Or switch to Android;)

Hey Roo2,

i’ve been hesitant to update this thread but for two days now I have had no glitches with Google Maps in my car!!!

I’ve updated to Google Maps 5.73 and it seems not only glitch free but the GPS location on the map in relation to the car seems very good

Fingers crossed it works for you and mine stays as it is!

Thanks Richmix. I’ve just done the update to 5.73. I’ll let you know. Cheers

Seems to be stable Richmix. Thanks! I’m also getting used to Waze as a great alternative to Googlemaps.

  • Author

Yeah, mine is ok too. I'm also using Waze a lot more. Like the report facility and certainly updates quicker than Google Maps!
