Best turbo upgrade

Featured Replies

No it's not a Jabba thread so don't take it away from the performance forum!!!

So, how would you Jabba stage III guys rate your upgrade experience? Does anybody have a T3 or T3/T4 (EIP or ATP) that they can compare to an IHI turbo? What about a k04 with or without a modified exhaust housing? Which turbo do you guys think is best? It would help if anybody with a Jabba stage III would find out about their turbo specs.

IHI is roller bearing low inertia turbo's so lag vs their size is minimal. Full boost is on from 2800rpm on small port motor, pulling hard to over 7K rpm.

Not high boost conversions, so less thermal load on induction.

Not high torque conversions so less load on transmission.

IHI is not like T3/4 which are old skool large turbo's which have lag and big bang power delivery. GT Ballistic series turbo's are more like a comparible product.

Not unusual for T3/4 to not produce their power until 4K rpm, and not to sustain this into the high rpms.

my 2 pennth as an IHI user on a couple of cars

Well, T3/T4s usually flow a lot more than IHI products. That's why they have the larger lag. The torque numbers should be higher on the IHI due to the boost at lower revs though. I'd say the GT28R is similar to the IHI turbo that Jabba uses, any clue which one it is though? Any clue on the hot side A/R and trim? Would it be similar to the VF (VF22, 23, etc) ones available for WRX's but with different exhaust housings? I've also been wondering if there's bigger ones than the one Jabba uses. I don't mind a bit of lag if it's going to explode up top (>4krpm).

Goodbye.

We use the K04 in our big turbo conversions on both petrol and diesel engines.

Easy engough to fit and give good results.

Although I dont have any figures to hand there are dyno results on out website I believe.

The K04 is not a worthwhile upgrade for our engines (KO3 Sport), IMHO. Why? well:

Its the same housing with slightly different internals (or is it the other way round?) yes it can handle more boost, but in doing so generates more heat which drops the power. All for the bargain price which is very similar to a JAbba IHI, which just happens to give at least 60BHP more than the 04. I suppose you pays ya money and takes ya choice.

I'll have to disagree since it may be a good route for some people. Although all RSs do have a K03 sport, not all octavias do. Mine (AGU) had a small k03 in it. The K04 give you a few options. First, it gives you a ton of torque. Some people like this over top end power. Second, if you modify the exhaust housing, you can make close to Jabba numbers (300bhp). The K04 upgrade isn't for everyone, but it has the advantage that you only replace 1 part (not the exhaust manifold, etc.) and your car remains looking very stock, alas with 300bhp and a ton of torque. Another great thing about this upgrade is price. The turbo will run you USD800 and the exhuast housing EUR880 (crazy):

http://www.hgp-turbo.de/vw/1_8turbo.html

Kinetic motorspors also modifies the K04s and sells them cheap:

http://www.kineticmotorsport.com/products/borgwarner/

Now with regards to the K03 sport being the same or not... I think it's the compresssor wheel that is the same as on the K04-001. If the housing is different, it could change the efficiency characteristics quite a bit. A smaller compressor A/R will give you more efficiency at high boost. I have some compressor maps to illustrate this:

http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/turbo/k03.htm (1.8T k03 not sure which)

http://www.s4biturbo.com/k03/S4K03big.jpg (S4 k03)

http://www.s4biturbo.com/k04/k04-0025.jpg (S4 K04 or RS4 turbo)

Notice the K04 is 72% efficient all the way to almost 1.6 bar whereas the k03 only goes to 1.2 bar. It's safe to say the turbo can handle 1.6 bar without flowing hot air. Also, the RS4 k04's compressor may flow slightly less than the k04-001 which is our stock replacement.

P.S. Amd is out of their MINDS with that GBP2500 price tag on a K04 upgrade. Get a turbo shipped from the US, and get an upsolute K04 chip and you're done for USD1100. With the modified exhaust housing you'll need an adjustable FPR and a VR6 MAF housing. That'll top out at like USD2000. You could add several custom remaps and still not reach the AMD price... Man those Euro prices...

I'm sure I saw a huge IHI at Jabba at one time... for a monstor project which may come to life one day. It was massive!

I guess its all down to specs not brands... IHI, Garrett, KKK etc

The IHI's in std stage 2/3 spec from Jabba are not renowned for massive torque but do sustain boost throughout the rev range.. Not the kick int he ar$e of a K04 running hard, but a progressive delivery which keeps going.

Lots of cars in the USA are running GT28RS's I think...

How about you post prices down in the "Discounts & Companies Forum", as opposed to doing it in the other areas ?

No-one else does it, you don't see the likes of JabbaSport popping up everytime some mentions they want a re-map, do you ??

Techie,

You're as welcome as anyone else to be a member of Briskoda. And you can express your personal beliefs on your car, what you have done to it etc. etc. But don't turn every post into an ad for AmD!

You could have said what you wanted to say without it sounding like an ad. Comments like "Although I dont have any figures to hand there are dyno results on out website I believe."(sic) (sorry, I know you edited it, but Des had already quoted you) just annoys everyone.

Make it your personal experience and you won't get flamed!!

Techie, I endorse what Howard has said about you being welcome. It would be a great shame if you were to leave us - but I don't think you will since this is a rather special site for Skoda enthusiasts and you have been with us for some time. :)

c'mon techie!

what would be the point of a friendly forum if people can't make honest observations?

take it in the spirit in which it was given, take it on board and stay!!!

regards,

Techie Dont resign, whilst I am a Jabba man I also have a lot of respect for AMD having done the Cannonball & seen the way they fixed all manor of vehicles so no axe to grind there.

The moderators have their view but its not personal & after all they keep this Site going. I guess they are very keen to keep Comercial & Individual views seperate so have a think & come back.

Its always good to have people posting who know the nuts & bolts of a car & can pass a knowledgeable view.

Speedy, you are quite right, I always forget that not all Octavias have the 03 sport.

For the normal 03, yes the 04 would be a viable option. Thanks for the compressor maps, just what I'd been trying to find.

Question for you, why the VR6 MAF housing? What benefits do you gain from it?

As Bill said, the brand isn't really all that important, they are all fairly similar.

I know someone who is having a GT30 (IIRC) put on their Golf, I'll have a chat with him and see if I can get any info. Or maybe Ross could post up some details as it's AmD doing the work.

Ross, don't get the hump over it. Yes, having AmD shoehorned into nearly every post is a tad annoying, but I just ignore it now.

This post cracks me up. First, someone can't take that someone else's opinion is different, and then everyone flames him even more for having said who he works for... Whatever. K04s can be good mods but not at GBP2500.

I've even heard someone put a K24/K26 compressor wheel in a modified K04 housing... not sure where, but if the desire is there to stay looking stock, there are options. It may also be a really reliable option since few stock parts are changed.

Regarding the VR6 MAF housing, it's to avoid having to do remaps. In Euroland/GB you guys are lucky in that you have a Jabba or an AMD or whatever near you, but I'm a few thousand miles from the nearest real VAG tuner. So... I've come up with a solution for my fuel needs without touching the software. My AGU has no MAP sensor, so if I condition the MAF signal (the only load sensor on my car), I'll directly alter the amount of fuel being added. So I put in a 3" internal diameter MAF housing (VR6 one is 2.75" ID), using the original sensor, and increased my injector flow to 440ml/min. It's running a bit rich right now, but with my adjustable FPR I can regulate that. A VR6 MAF housing looks pretty stock and can work with 360ml injectors (good enough for 300bhp).

Speedy,

I'm sure no-one wants to see Techie go, and all input is welcome (sounds a bit Johnny 5 :o ). I wasn't flaming him - just pointing out that what he says in his posts always sounds like an advert for AmD. It wouldn't have been so bad if it weren't for the DV thread.

AmD KO4 conversion gives good results

If 2.5K + VAT for 230bhp (AIR) is a good result then i've lost the plot. If your view is based on this being a good conversion then your view smacks of I'm going to sell you what I want and not what I need, Just hope i'm wrong.

Size? What diameter is the VR6 one?

I know mine uses an S3 tube (bigger diameter) and have seen the RS4 one which is massive. Scaling of mass airflow to match the software/tables is usually something to do with it.
