The sound track was too loud, inappropriate for the time, and frankly, rubbish, but the car, OooF!

California Kid.

You must be reading my mind.:D I was just about to post that.

Ha ha.

My sister was a Monkees fan & of course we watched the TV shows. A bit of Monkee trivia - Davy Jones played in a celebrity charity football match at our school against our 1st eleven. Must have been somewhere around 1968-70. Can't say I was a fan of the group though.

Going back a little further does anyone remember 'Cannonball'? It was a Canadian tv series aired in the UK late '50's, early 60's?

I vaguely remember the show which featured two guys driving a GMC 'cannonball' truck getting into various scrapes.

I've a feeling they were Ford based.  I only (think I) know this because my Dad told me he worked on one of them.

Yeah, not so keen on the front grill but rest of it isn't bad.

Like a Citroen Godess and a Lotus Esprit had a lovechild.

It would be very pretty but high maintenance and prone to breakdowns

A bit of a Pink theme here:-

The "real"  Thunderbird FAB 1 was based on a Bus chassis Van.  (Same studio as the UFO - TV21)

And the "Pink Panther" car.

I was always like the vehicles from Captain Scarlet, the car and the SPV.

Child of the 80s me so I was corrupted by films like -

Canonball Run (I've never quite got over Adreienne Barbeau and Tara Buckman in that lambo  and I was probably 6 when I saw that film). The lambo sound (which I understand was another car) at the start stuck in  my head too.

Dukes of Hazard (watched innocently as we did in those days), and the sound of a big block V8

Le Mans with Steve McQueen

Gumball Rally (although tbh I was always disappointed it wasn't Cannonball run)

Smokey and the Bandit (Trans Am, iconic if crap)

Knight Rider

Chips

Cannonball and the LP400S with the nose fin........

I saw Lady Penelope's car in the tin about 45 years ago at Heathfield Park, back when there was a Park there.  Could still be there I suppose.

Still got my Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle (with missiles), and my UFO Interceptor (with missile)

Not sure if this has been mentioned (anyone fancy compiling a list of film mentioned so far?) Anyhoo it's on Amazon Prime and features Derek Bell  and in car footage of the Porsche 956

In-car 956

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Car-956-Derek-Bell/dp/B07VVNWSRQ

It's a bit old school video and not great quality, at least in terms of the video, but of course the driver is without criticism

I thought that front wing was the coolest thing ever.

Later I found out it was a requirement in California to have a nose height above a certain level on a car. The front wing was the work around for Lambo.

Talking of old school in-car race footage here's my all time favourite Super Saloon race car & driver.

Gerry Marshall in Baby Bertha - a Vauxhall Firenza based wide bodied super saloon with a 5.7 Chevy engine.

This car was was amazing back in '70's & is still a big favourite with a lot of people these days on the classic racing scene.

Back in '70's I was working for GM as an apprentice so I had an affinity with Vauxhall / Opel cars & the DTV racing team.

Simpler times & when the racing was on terrestrial TV every Saturday (Grandstand or World of Sport) or I'd "borrow" a work Vauxhall Victor, Opel Ascona or Manta & drive down to Brands Hatch to watch in person with a girlfriend. Good memories.

Great Video, considering the in car shots are poor. Gerry Marshall was a great driver. My Old Man Had a Magnum Coupe’ in Starfire Blue metallic, I loved that car but I overtook a neighbour one day on a long straight near home, I was pulling 3 figures not knowing the Old Man was his passenger.............

I saw him get dropped off at home, so I legged it over the back field and stayed out until he had calmed down a bit!   I got relegated to the Maxi 1750 which was the fishing boat hauler.

Bit of history & further info.

Before Baby Bertha above, was Big Bertha - below. A Vauxhall Ventora based super saloon - also driven by Gerry Marshall.

Gerry Marshall at the wheel of “BIG BERTHA” a 1974 Vauxhall Ventora , fitted with a 500Bhp. 5 Litre Holden V8 . Won 3 of it's … | Vauxhall, Big bertha, Classic cars

After Baby Bertha came Mega Bertha. A Mk1 Cavalier with an 8.1L 800hp Reynolds/Chevy V8 seen left below beside Baby Bertha. The Mega Bertha program was cancelled before it could be raced in anger. MB was mothballed for 20+ Years before being re-commissioned & has made appearances at Goodwood Festival of Speed & other classic racing events. I had a MK1 Cavalier 1600L but it never looked or went like Mega Bertha!

Snap - well nearly. My dad (also worked for GM) had a Magnum 1800 auto in metallic brown metallic with brown velour upholstery - very '70's! Basically it was a Mk3 Viva with a bigger engine, different dash & 4 headlights instead of 2:giggle:. The 1st day he got it I was in it & all over it & I found out that they had wired the indicators arse about face i.e. indicate left & the right hand indicator front & back flashed. Typical british build quality for the mid '70's!

My Dad also had a Chevette which I borrowed one day & got damaged when a dog ran out in front of me & smashed the front headlight. Luckily the dog was OK & insured so repairs were covered on the owners insurance. Even though it wasn't my fault was the last time he let me drive any of his cars!

There's even a better B&W video of Gerry at wheel of a 2.5ltr Viva GT vs a 1,600 Twin Cam Escort vs a 5.7ltr Chevy Camero in a British Saloon Car championship race at the old Crystal Palace track in '71 & commentated by the late great Murray Walker. The Viva & Escort beat up the Camero on the twisty bits & the Camero comes back at them on the straits. Nip & tuck all race, sideways on every corner until the Viva's brakes give up, the Camero overcooks it on a corner & the Escort takes the win. Edge of your seat racing between very different cars (there's even mini's in this race) which you just don't seem to see anymore. It was this race that made me decide to get a Viva GT which I modified quite a bit.

Have a look here Crystal Palace race  & read the responses from those YouTubers who've watched it. Priceless. Motorsport moguls should take note & revive this type of David & Goliath formula racing. Just my 4 pence worth!
