Spare wheel or not that is the question

Featured Replies

When my Vrs was in for its last service the garage did a health check and pointed out that the tyre sealant in the boot has gone passed its expiry date. They quoted about £65 for replacement bottle.

I am not a big fan of sealant, bad experience with my Fireblade back in the day.

Have seen preloved 18" space saver kits on ebay with toolkit for about £95 which would do without raising the boot floor for a full size spare.

I had a look in the boot and looks like there should be a clamp to hold the spare but have no idea if the kit on ebay has one or what it looks like. Any one have a picture of it?

I will have to do do something as my breakdown policy specifically says you must have a spare wheel or repair kit to be covered.

What have others done?

For me this would depend on the kind of mileage you do, if you do a fair bit of long distance i would ALWAYS go with a spare, if its local stuff repair sealant would be sufficient.

Bit of both now lockdown is eased. Inlaws live about 80 miles away, son lives about 150 miles away and wants help to move house😬

My local garage once told  me they don't work with the sealant stuff and if you wanted a tyre change they'd advise me to go elsewhere that stuck with me and I've always had a spare wheel.

Spare wheel, always.

As with the other posts, spare wheel every time. With my previous Octavia VRS I bought a full size spare wheel. Dam good job I did. Hit a pothole and that caused a bulge in the tyre side wall. The tyre with the bulge got me home though. Bought a brand new tyre and a month later going round a roundabout, that new tyre hit a pothole and burst. The rubbish gunge you get with the car would not have helped there. So on went the spare wheel and continued my journey. With my present VRS, I have bought a space saver wheel and again dumped that plastic tub of gunge. Moral of the story is, you might not ever burst a tyre, but if you ever do, you will be so glad you bought a spare wheel so that you are not left stranded.

are you sure a full sized steel wouldn't fit or is it different in the mk3, id have to check the size of mine i think its Thinner than the alloy but allows me to drive at >50mph

The boot well on my 67 plate SE facelift will take a full size spare. Although I bought a space saver off eBay and a kit - poly tray, jack etc - from Skoda.

Re a clamp to hold the spare wheel in place - is one really needed?  I wouldn’t have thought that it had anywhere to move to once it’s in the well.  Even without, if my boot’s anything to go by, the lots of ‘stuff’ that’s packed around it...

Ordered a 18" space saver, toolkit and clamp off eBay. I know back in the day not having the wheel clamped down was an mot failure may not be the case now.

Did consider a full size spare but would need to lift the floor as don't have the adjustable one.

Spare wheel always for me.

£65 for a can of sealant is absolutely criminal...

£7.50 on amazon...but these things are only good for relatively small leaks....and you might well have to buy a new tyre anyway if you get a puncture...so why not get a spare now and be confident of getting home..?

I've just purchased a decent jack kit off Amazon for £20. Will head to the scrapyard for a 16" 5 stud wheel and legal tyre. I'm not paying £100 for something I might never use.

Good point, but are they now allowed to remove things, such as the boot floor and the tool insert, in order to check?  Didn’t think they were, but I may be wrong.

Just make sure that the spare tyre / wheel combo, will offer the same rolling radius as the other wheel on the axle. I made the mistake of using a company who advertised spare wheels, gave them the size of my current alloys and tyres and they supplied a steel and spare tyre. Only for the diameter of the whole to be about 5 cm different, needless to say when I needed to use it it caused a world of pain….

Spare wheel always!

Went to the Isle of Wight with the family 3 years ago in a brand new, month old Karoq Sportline. Picked up a puncture within 10 mins of arriving. It was bank holiday weekend, no tyres in my size on the island - would be 4 days before they could get one. Thank god I optioned the spare wheel!

Looks like its out of stock now!

General question - do we need the 18" space saver for the vRS or will a 17" fit?

think the 18" is for the vrs because of the bigger brakes IIRC

17" Crystal wheels fit the vRS by design, these are 6.0J x 17" ET48 and take 205/55/R17 tyres, part number 5E0071497E FL8 or 8Z8, you can get them in silver or black, unfortunately in the UK they do not seem to stock them and refuse to supply last time I asked a year ago.

I got a full set incl. the spare in Czechia and collected from a dealer there. They come with a new centre cap and fit in the spare wheel well just fine without lifting the boot floor, not to mention providing much better comfort on the road.

PS. If you want just 1 of these as a spare for original sized vRS wheels, the tyre size to get is 205/50/R17.  But these wheels work well with the 205/55/R17 tyres and this was the intended Skoda size (still used on the Scout), only then you need 4 or 5 of them.

5E0071496A 8Z8 is the diamond silver version of the CRYSTAL alloy rims. 5E0071496A is the same as 5E0071496A 8Z8, as 8Z8 is the associated colour code.

5E0071496E FL8 is the black metallic version of the CRYSTAL alloy rims. 5E0071496E is the same as 5E0061496E FL8, as FL8 is the associated colour code.

5E0071497E always comes with the FL8 colour code. It can never come with any other colour code including 8Z8.
