Boot handle

Featured Replies

Has anyone else had the boot handle break? Someone else I know had their one broke, I can only assume that if you have something flat again the boot lid the handle sticks out and so bends and snaps.

Anyone had it replaced under warranty?

It's on the right hand side inside boot lid used to pull lid down when fully open.

Ah OK, I haven't seen one on mine. Maybe it was broken from the factory. Thanks for the reply

As far as I know it's not fitted to Karoqs with the electric tailgate - we just have a choice of buttons to press :)

Sounds a better option it's in the sel down I would guess. As tail gate was an option.

In truth I think its a pointless piece of rubber. I just push downwards on the bottom of the tail gate in the manner that I have always done ever since my first hatchback probably 30 years ago!

All depends how tall you are - without the 'pointless bit of rubber' many folk wouldn't be able to pull the tailgate down...........

30 years of getting dirty hands and leaving finger marks on the bottom of the tailgate through refusing to try a pointless piece of rubber.

My Yeti has a recessed finger grip in the tailgate bottom but inside of the sealing strip so always clean.

That's how you know it's time to give the car a wash.......:tongueout:

I agree.  An even film of dirt looks "kind of clean" until some muppet closes the boot with their fingers and leaves clean finder smudges/marks that make it look even dirtier that it is/looked. I'm a big fan of the handle!!

Pointless not to my 5ft wife! Poor design, yes as anything in that area can't be near the handle as it will bend and break.

Agree as my wife is only 5ft it's a poor quality to fail after 2 years. The last year it hasn't being anywhere.

All part of VAG's race to the bottom & selecting suppliers on price alone, if I buy a pattern part from Ali-express for centimes I should not be surprised to find that it has been moulded from recycled diddlydidos and self destructs from UV within a year even if it never sees the light of day but VAG know how to design & specify something that doesn't, indeed they never used to fail prematurely, the one in my 2006 Octavia could have won a tug of war against a pit bull terrier.

It was "Simply Clever" design & I really liked the idea, estate cars always catch a lot of road muck very quickly.

Calm down, calm down,...

Looking at the photo posted at the start of the thread, the rubber handle (actually a reinforced composite material) seems intact - correct me if I'm wrong.

So it's the bolt that attaches the handle to a captive nut and bracket under the hatch trim that's come loose, and rather than any manufacturing process failure it's an assembly process issue?  You can just see the hole for the bolt in the right-angled bit ath the top.

Just throwing this in, because I had cause to remove the hatch trim and rubber handle on my previous Octavia and know what comprises the  hatch/handle/trim relationship. The Karoq is quite similar.

And for what it's worth, it's the devil's own work to re-attach, even with the correct bolt - which I suspect has fallen somewhere into the deepest recesses of Goldtw74's internal hatch panel.

That is just a Google photo my one is still attached to the boot lid just as a crack has developed in it due to it not being flexible enough.

If a case of unscrewing the old one and screwing in the new one that's straight foreward but if it means taking trim off maybe bit more reluctant to do.

I would of 'borrowed' the one off mother in law car but that's broken off🤣

Ah, that makes things a bit clearer!  I stand corrected.

You need fingers like a chimpanzee to get access to the captive bolt in the Octavia, it's hidden under the trim several inches from the edge and you have to work by feel.

Just looking at my Karoq the Torx bolt is accessible from the outer surface of the trim, the only tricky bit would be getting the handle in the right position for the bolt through the trim.

To answer your second question in the first post, I'd expect that to be replaced under warranty.  It might be an easy fix but what would the retail cost be?

IIRC from when I installed a reversing camera on my Octavia, with the same handle/strap, even when the bolt is removed, the handle doesn’t just pull out/off, it seems to be routed through the boot lining.  I must admit though, I was only loosening the lining to get at the back of the boot release handle, so didn’t take much notice of how this bit fitted.

I don’t recall having much trouble replacing the bolt, but as I said, I didn’t actually separate the pull-down strap from the boot lining.

Thanks, I've got it booked into Skoda to look the part is only £2:45 so if it comes to it I'll try and fit it.

hi, i appreciate this is an old thread, but has anyone replaced successfully. If so do you need to remove the tailgate trim and thread through. If so is there any suggestions on how to remove.

Many thanks for your interest. But no it has not been fixed, nor has my dealer been in touch after many phone calls to them. So in December I was offered a very good price in part exchange for my car, and I took it. So I have parted company with the dealer and Skoda. Absolutely nothing wrong with Skoda, but the dealership (Birchwood Skoda Eastbourne) is another matter.
