Confused about engine oil spec

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction here.

I have a 2014 VRS TSI (EA888 GEN3) and it's coming up for it's annual oil change. In the past I have always purchased Quantum Platinum 5W-40 fully synthetic and had no problems.

Anyway, today my kit arrived to do the service, and I noticed that the VW specifications on the oil have changed.

Previously the packaging would say the oil meets the following spec: VW 502 / 505 / 505.01

The oil I received today has the following spec: VW 505 / 505.01

Obviously 505 / 505.01 are diesel spec oils (Although I suspect the car would be fine using it as the grade is right as is the weight)

What's really confusing me is the product number for the oil is exactly the same. (I kept my packaging from last year)

For those interested the PN is: ZGB 115 QLB 015 25

I know a lot of you on here use Quantum for their cars, so I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this? I'm reluctant to put the stuff in if it's not right, but my gut tells me it's probably fine.

Cheers guys!

You are looking for oils that are VW504 and VW507 rated.

So VW 504 00 / 507 00.

VW 504 00 for this age of TSI, Fixed or Variable servicing. 5w 30 FS III   (that is long life.)

Or if you want VW 502 00  so 5w 40 FS.    This is the spec if you can use for Fixed Service Oil & Filter intervals with a TSI.

That was how VW Group were showing the recommended oils by 2014.

Below what show as far as VW505 00

I found this article useful, long and short of it is that the VW spec's for oil are really only for cars in warranty, after that you just need to select a quality oil of the right weight. It goes further to discuss what to look for in an oil if your are running stage 1 or more, then the important thing is to look for the  HTHS or High Temp/High Shear of an oil:

Thank you Wino! That's exactly what I needed.

As I suspected, 505 01 isn't going to do any harm to my engine, but as per others recommendations I've ordered some 504 and I'll keep the 505 01 for doing a flush at some point in the future.

You don't need 504 if you're doing annual changes, unless mileage per year is high.

Yup I know, but it was actually slightly cheaper than the 502 so no harm done :)

It's a thinner oil (5w-30) so I may see slightly higher consumption, but the oil gets changed every 7k/12 months (which ever comes first) so unlikely to be an issue.
