Halfrauds strike again - can't even change a battery! I should know better!

Okay - think it is worth some more info here.  If your MK3 is between 2013 and early 2015, then you DON'T need to code in your battery.  It was only from 2014/15 (MY14/MY15 build) onwards then you need your battery coded in.

Generally, go for a decent VARTA battery (EFM/AGM) - with a BEM code on it.  Most Halfords WON'T stock this as standard.  They do list a AGM battery - https://www.halfords.com/motoring/batteries/car-batteries/halfords--096agm-start%2Fstop-agm-12v-car-battery-5-year-guarantee-548638.html,

but that won't work with every Octavia.

Please tell me why the earlier cars don't need coding?

Mine is a 2018 model @varaderoguy.

I'll update after my visit tomorrow. As long as I get it coded, I have 5 years of cover should it not last. From then, I can get something better etc.

Don't need a BEM code on MQB platform cars...as there are separate coding lines for Ah, type, serial number & brand..

& a 096 AGM should work on any MK3 Octavia as the battery tray is the same & will take the biggest (096) & the two smaller batteries

They didn't have a Battery Management System, so there is nothing to code!

AFAIK they didn't have stop/start so didn't need a BMS.

My local store sorted it within 2 minutes :) - if I need another, just go to the store (big if though after all the hassle)!

Mine has stop/start. 2013 model

Wasn't aware that you could have stop/start without battery management???

The only certain way to know if coding is needed is to do a scan with a diagnostic tool (such as VCDS) and if a battery management module shows up (either as a slave of the CAN Gateway at #19 or a stand-alone module at #61) then it needs coding, if neither of those modules exist then there is no BMS and hence nothing to code.

MQB platform cars were designed for stop/start & battery management

Whether your country's importer spec'ed them that way is another matter.....

BUT most of the European MQB cars got it from day one..

The July 2014 Skoda Octavia MK3 brochure list all cars from the basic 1.2lt "S" as having stop/start engine tech.

Therefore BEM codes are N/A & have been superseded..by the four separate coding lines as I previously mentioned.

Mine is a 2013 model and it does have a battery monitoring control module under the CAN gatewat module:

   Battery Monitoring Control Module:
   Subsystem 3 - Part No SW: 5Q0 915 181 C    HW: 5Q0 915 181 C
   Component: J367-BDMHella  H03 8042
   Serial number: 4869390203

Do I need to code it when changing the battery?

What is the maximum Ah capacity on a 2013 model?

096 is the biggest case size..there is no  "upper limit" on Ah capacity.

Yes you need to alter the settings..if its the exact same battery Ah, type just alter the serial number setting by one digit...if its different Ah or type then these settings also need altering

All info in my previous posts, but I'll repeat:-

This is from I how to guide I did on the MK7 Golf forum..same applies for any MQB platform car like the Mk3 Octavia..

How to retro-fit a bigger capacity battery to a Mk7 Golf | GOLFMK7 - VW GTI MKVII Forum / VW Golf R Forum / VW Golf MKVII Forum

VCDS coding required
From the Main screen:-
Select Control Module [Select]
[19-CAN Gateway]
Advanced Functions screen:-
[Adaptions-10]
New value choice screen:-
Change the following four channels, inputting the relevant data about the new battery.
IDE03256-MAS06105-Battery adaptation-Rated battery capacity
IDE03256-MAS06106-Battery adaptation-Battery technology
IDE03256-MAS06107-Battery adaptation-Battery manufacturer
IDE03256-MAS06108-Battery adaptation-Battery Serial Number

When you click on "Battery technology" (using VCDS 21.3.0) a drop down list appears with the following options (= actual meaning):-
Wet = Standard Lead Acid
Fleece = Standard A.G.M.
Wickel6V
Wickel12V
Ultracap
Gel = Standard Gel Lead Acid
Lithium ions = Standard LiFePO4
EFB = Standard E.F.B.
Binary - AGM = "Bipolar" A.G.M. type
EFB+ = E.F.B. "Plus" type
Not_assigned_10
Not_assigned_11
Not_assigned_12
Not_assigned_13
Not_assigned_14
Unknown

According to various sources of information, including numerous car scans & threads on Ross-Tech, "Fleece" is for standard AGM batteries, "EFB" is for standard EFB batteries, & "Wet" is for standard lead acid batteries, as these settings are used at the factory. The setting of "Binary - AGM" is apparently for specialist "Bipolar AGM" batteries! Also the drop down list is from VCDS & not generated by your car's BCM, therefore, your car may not support all the options on the list, & the BCM will reject the value when you tell it to accept it!

Battery BEM codes are now redundant with the above separate channels. The most important channels are:- Rated battery capacity, Battery technology, & Battery Serial Number. For the Battery Serial Number, just change one digit of the old one. This channel tells the BCM that a new battery has been installed & to relearn the new battery & forget any “learnt values” for the old battery!

That's good news. Not all models had the battery control module from 2013, but it good to see those who do.  MY2015 introduced it across the range. You might not have had the monitoring circuitry from the off which required the serial monitoring from day 1 hence my earlier comments.
