the truth about electric cars

Featured Replies

@Graham ButcherWhat date was the statement attributed to VAUXHALL made that is in that article you have posted?

I remember the discussion when it was first posted.

Vauxhall part of Stallantis,  Citroen / DS, Peugeot, Jeep, Fiat / Abarth, Alfa Romeo,

& the Vans from the group.

So they might well be talking as STELLANTIS and not Vauxhall.  Put more money in & not just go for Publicity / Advertising.

On-street electric car charging: What to know

Among the many challenges in the transition towards electric cars, it’s for those without access to off-street charging. Here’s what you need to know about on-street EV charging.

That is the date of the Article.  That was not when VAUXHALL were first quoting the ridiculous 40% figure, or the 60% figures on driveways and such crap.

True, but as the article makes no other reference that I can see, (I copied and pasted it in full) that is the only date reference we have, sorry.

Where the Office for National Statistics or what ever agency comes up with the Off street or driveways statistics is just so relevant.

Housing schemes, Low rise, high rise, flats, terraced housing, homes not with gardens or access to roads, apartments, HMO,s, Mobile Home and Canal, River boats etc and the the various properties people live in around the UK compared to Detached or semi detached, 4 in blocks etc.

Yes, we have some estates here, not that old either, where the houses are located along walkways at right angles to the street with about 30 houses on them and the cars are parked at the back of them at the end of their garden and access to the parking is some distance away off another street.

This video suggests that the couple with the alleged water damaged traction battery on their Tesla may, I say may because we can only go on what has been reported, have been fobbed off by Tesla as this Renault Zoe has been flooded and was actually shown on national TV, and it seems to have survived being flooded and was flooded inside the car, as he makes perfectly clear, the electrics did not get wet, despite being underwater, so they can resist the influx of water after all, it seems.

The TESLA water damage story is about a TESLA.

No point going on about a Renault, or Nissan, MINI / BMW, Stellantis, Hyundai / KIA etc.  They will have their own trial and tribulations.

I want to know about the MG that 'Kidnapped' the driver and the £17,000 bill from a TESLA Dealer.   Not the one where the owner made an explosion of his duff one in a quarry.

They sold or told their story to the press, surely their must be some updates.

I dont even need to look at that video, which I suspect would be another clickbait anyway, to know that you cannot claim a battery pack has survived a momentary immersion by the fact that it drives out of a flood with water draining from the cabin.

12v electrics or even 48v electrics will function perfectly underwater, the damage is done by the water retained and galvanic corrosion which takes time.

That Vauxhall will have 100% taken water into the battery pack, its vented for gawds sake and they are not going to extend the vents up into the cabin to asphyxiate the occupants with chemical fumes in a fault situation.

I dont believe for a second that the Tesla suffered water ingress driving through puddles on the way to the restaurant where it failed, that just the story he wants taking up, it will have happened in the days before.

The battery packs may even have drainage holes.

@J.R.The most recent video is about a Renault Zoe.

@wyx087Do you mean all other brand and models from VW Group have rapid charging?

There are new Renault Zoe with only 22 AC charging and no DC CCS.     Rapid enough, but not RAPID. There are Hyundai Ionic with just AC charging.

Sorry, I meant all those e-Up/Mii/CityGo variants, only CityGo SE does not have rapid charging. According to research within that thread. Not across all VAG cars. I've no knowledge of earlier e-Golfs or most basic level of ID3.

Hyundai Ioniq have PHEV versions which don't have rapid charging. AC charging is towards front at side of the car.

I have not came across any full BEV version of the Ioniq that doesn't do rapid charging, charge port at left rear. There are 2 trim levels (Premium and Premium SE) both have rapid charging. This is one of the BEV model that I'm eyeing for my parents.

Different kettle of fish to the massive thermal changes subjected to and gas venting needed for an operational EV battery pack.

Like I said we designed military equipment to be functional under IP66 and IP67 conditions but had to resort to specialised packing enclosures for the sustained immersion ratings.

IP67 allows for limited water ingress if no harmfull effects, any water ingress into an EV battery pack will not only be harmfull but potentially very dangerous, they absolutely must have warnings about water depth when wading.

Venting and sustained immersion are oxymorons, the underwater scuba divers camera casings are not vented, water sealing is no problem to the designers, deflection of the casing through the pressure differential interfering with the operation of switches etc is the major headache.

Then there is the unacceptable cost of providing measures to safeguard idiot owner drivers from themselves.

Sounds like a kettlefull of ipse dixit.  How much do you know about those requirements, really?

Peace be with you Pete.

Yeah, I know, but I posted that video as it clearly shows that it is indeed possible to make traction batteries and other parts that are waterproof and that the Tesla dealer might just be trying the age old trick of denying any liability in the hope the person complaining gives up and goes away.

@J.R. This is where your thought process shows itself to be lacking. That video is about a Renault Zoe, not a Vauxhall, and the car was not being driven, it was parked, and the river overflowed for about an hour the battery was submerged, and the car was subjected to other vehicles such as 4x4s with a greater wading depth, being driven through the floods creating waves.

I just wish people would actually watch videos before passing any comments, we could all benefit as a result of some possible learning taking place and also not having to enter into endless posts back and forth in order get a point made.

Yeah thats me, lacking, I must be, some very nice bloke on the internet told me so, wasn't that kind of him!

Well like I said, had you watched the video, instead of jumping to the wrong conclusions, we wouldn't be doing this again🤔

No idea if this is staged or not - those things do happen but if it isn't, what an entitled arrogant horror of a person to think she can just steal someone else's electricity and have the audacity to park on some  else's property in order to do so.

I think it is staged, there is a whole series of these videos on the internet and she seems to be in them all.

100% staged
