the truth about electric cars

My brothers 1972 Mini Clubman estate had the board fitted in production, as did my 1983 Mini 1000 saloon.

Mine was a 71 pre Clubman with the wind up windows and concealed door hinges but had been really messed around with, it may have been removed, I was sceptical that such a small shield would work compared to all the elaborate aftermarket fetishwear but it worked perfectly in the worst conditions.

The originals I think used to have the sliding windows?

I think they started switching over to wind up from 68/69

Later I feel but its all a bit vague, I only owned a couple but I welded up hundreds (no exaggeration) the A panel (door hinge panel) was a frequent one and it changed with the new doors with wind up windows as the hinges were no longer external, I think my Mini was one of the first of that MK3? variant, its reg was GWB 361J so a 70/71 IIRC.

... except on the van, my brothers 1970 Mini van still had the sliding windows (yes the upgrade from a van to a Clubman Estate 2 years later was very welcome!).

Not sure if anyone is following the MacMaster in his Taycam, or Geoff buys Cars, but they are doing a challenge between the Taycan (EV) and a diesel BMW 320D, driving from John O' Groats to Lands End in the fastest time and also the cheapest. It is interesting and challenging for both of them with the disgusting weather in Scotland combined with road works. Where is your bet going, EV or diesel?

This is the first leg of two, staying in a hotel on the M6 at Killington Services near Kendal.

My money would be in the diesel of course. Because from historic videos, it is clear the EV driver has issue with common sense and is driving one of lowest efficiency EV on the market.

This is a better run:

At 34p/kwh Tesla wants for supercharging these days, exclusively all super charging, cost works out to be £75.

My Clubman Estate did too,

My 1972 1300 Van Den Plas had one too 👍

I drive a bit nippy, but did that tosher have any view up the arse of that bus to go for that overtake?

I hold back and peek out and indicate and boot it if i am pretty sure i will not meet a muppet like me doing the same coming the other way.

Does that Taycan have Lane Keep assist so with the use of the indicator that might have done the move just fine?

What speed limit was it his or the busses they were going at?

Yeah, that overtake was crazy, something that I'd never attempt, no matter how fast the car I was driving is, he is a bit of a nutter.

@J.R. You're right about the breathers in some EV batteries, they certainly exist in Tesla Model X and also Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV's but these cars were subjected to being totally submerged beneath water and the gull wing doors were open but still beneath the water surface, so the batteries would be exposed to greater water pressure then that experienced in deep puddles etc where the water only comes up to to half the wheel height or less.

I thought that some of you may like to watch this video of the resurrection of a concept hybrid delivery van that I just stumbled over, interesting to watch I thought.

The second part of the Geoff Buys Cars challenge has been posted up now, the Porsche Taycan man has yet to do his version of it as he seemed to be spending all of his time finding working chargers and then getting charged, so he never actually made it to Land's End, to find out what actually happened you will need to watch the video, or you could if you want to cheat, jump towards the end of the video.

I'll choose the 3rd option thanks!

I had a quick peep, unsurprisingly, diesel won by 3-5 pints of beer waiting time.

EV guy was complaining about being led by the blind to find charge points. His usual antics.

Taycan man has the usual excuse of holdups because of waiting for a charge at Ionity chargers yet there are alternative 100 + chargers in the near vicinity of them as an option.

Sitting about as often as he makes out he has no lack of time to check out what there is around and about.

As to the Porsche chargers charging costs, that is as it is then if you are paying full whack.

PS

D!ck head in the Solid Blue Taycan reg DJ ** on the A9 in the the torrential rain in the 70 mph limit Average Speed cameras had no need to go passed in the outside lane at over 75 mph and then stick in the outside lane going slower than 70 mph as the rest of us wanted up the road.

The brake light coming on when going through the water was maybe the car deciding it was lacking grip or the driver thinking bl00dy hell this water is deep.

At least they turned off at the junction for Gleaneagles having been leader of the pack for about 10 miles.

To be fair to him, he was in a challenge and he also explained a couple of time that he was on slow charger was only giving him 1mile per minute and someone plugged in next to him and his charge rate was halved as a result of inadequate grid supply. I doubt anybody else could gave done any better given the circumstances.

He is full of guff!

Perth, he had Ionity,

or near BP Rapids, or Porsche or next to that EVYVE. 1/4 mile up no use to him a Tesla Supercharger. (Broxden Park & Ride.)

WTF is he looking at a Charge Place Scotland App for Down South of the Scottish borders as they are even crap for locations in Scotland?

You are assuming that everyone knows that. Truth is there are many apps, just how many is one person supposed to have on their phone, and how are you meant to check them all while on the move? As I understood it, he stated in part one that he was planning his charging stops because everyone slates him for not planning on advance. Truth is that chargers are not plenty full enough still yet.

It is doing it as a part time job.

He has been up and down past Perth umpteen times in 2 years with that car.

@Graham ButcherHe has said he uses Waze.  He has a built in system in the Porsche, he could use ZapMap or Plugshare.

But he messes up everything because he has a very quick charge car and never seems to get quick charges.

I met a lady in a Jag EV today, into Scotland from Leeds, said how expensive Gretna Green was, was using a charge place scotland charger running dead slow,

had not had a Charge Place Scotland app, had to download, thought she could tap and pay.

I helped with Tesla non Tesla for Aviemore, told her when to charge in Perth if she wanted and where to in Inverness,

she was away to drive into epic weather.

They have suspended the Road / Gas pipe work on the A9 because of 2 hour delays.  Enchanted Forest etc Pitlochry.

PS

Why were they crossing the Forth on a John O Groat / Landsend, just for further delays?

PPS

I was not quick today.

85 miles then a 39 Minute charge,  90 miles and a 42 minute charge.

50 miles and 30 minutes charge and now @100%.

  Cost, home charge, so 30 x 21 pence.  £6.30.   & 1 x 39 minutes £7.20.   Next 2 were free.

Next charge will be free in 90 miles, then i will need 25 kWh @ 55 pence so £13.75.    Then likely home to charge to full again.

Yeah, that car is just stupid for our roads, too wide and too low, no idea how it copes with speed bumps, some of the ones near. I have managed to bottom on in a Superb even.

It was a fore gone conclusion that the BMW was going to win that challenge, 2 fuel stops for it and at least 5 for the Porsche, 30 minutes a time for a wee, fill with diesel and bite to eat, that's an hour. Porsche say 45 minutes minimum on a high speed charger, thats at least 3.75 hours added on, a wee and bite to eat can be done be while charging.

How would your car perform on that trip, 974 miles, lets say your car does 120 miles to a full charge, meaning that you would need at least 9 stops for charging and how long would each one take?

PS. They have to cross the Forth unless they take the West Coast route, their route plan looks like they crossed on the M9 at Stirling?

I am not daft I will take the BMW 520 diesel estate.   I got 60 mpg yesterday and on return trip son driving it was 45 mph.   Same average speed trip.. difference being I do not touch the brakes, go faster quicker and coast.

Yes his Porsche takes charging time and costs lots if paying high public charge costs, but it you want a 80 kWh battery and get 3.5 miles per kWh then that is rather different form an under 30 kWh battery like I have.   But I don't eat and drink every time I charge or even need the loo.    MINI had 50 kW max charging and the Taycan 270 (350) kW when you get to that type of charger.  150 kW charger does fine.

They crossed the Queensferry Crossing.  To Edinburgh.    Just stupid.    Easy, Perth Porsche Broxden then 200 yard Broxden roundabout and go south on  A9 past Stirling and then to England as LEE the forgetful or purposely stupid has filmed before.   Passing chargers right next to the A9.

No, given the circumstances, only an idiot would stay at a slower destination charger during their "race". An even bigger idiot would skip other rapid chargers and end up in to be so low on range and end up in this situation.

See the Tesla Model S video I posted. It's comfortably do-able in one day in an EV with driver assists. All without needing any phone apps with Tesla's proper sat-nav.
