the truth about electric cars

Featured Replies

e-Up! not early ones, the later sister e-Up!,  SEAT Mii electric or the Skoda Citigo iV.

Care needs taken that the is the speed of charging you need with the AC onboard charger. The issue was with some Mii electics and Citigo iv,s

They are rather good for the range they get.

I just did a scan on Autotrader, and you've covered all the bases there. None of them have what I would call a boot though, more of a cupboard. There is of course the VW E-UP, but that is just an electric Fabia.

Hang a moment, how about a Citroen C-Zero? Or a Mercedes Benz B Class?

Zero must have a tiny boot surely.

Is there an EV Merc B ?

Improvement of safety over a 2014 Fabia would be good. Euroncap seems poor to help compare as it is so different year to year.

According to Auto trader, yes they are listing a electric B class, unless it's a typo.

Plenty cheap Stallantis EV,s about or MG,s.

@RootedYep, but I think the budget was upto 8K and there were none in the price range on Autotrader.

426 EV,s when you put the price at £9,000 which you do because asking prices are a dream and a wish and not buying prices.

Maybe not all are EV,s but most are.

I might check out the one in Cupar next week.

Yes and it's the nice newer shape.

Range not great but daughter only needs just over 100 miles most of the time and actually mostly just a few miles.

Did 200 kph in the old shape merc A or B class ie tall wedge jobie and it scared me having so little front crumple zone but newer ones look OK.  Many A and Bs had Renault engines but not sure where the EV power train came with these early EV mercs. Very rare they seem.

@lol-lolCo-developed with TESLA is what strikes my interest.

I think that might not be the case these days. That is the premise I went with in April/May when I was looking and every single dealer I visited when it came down to trying to agree a price and or doing any work required on the car, the answer was always the same, zero deals, the price was not negotiable and if there was no detailed service history to show when the toothed cam belt and water pump was or indeed if it had been changed, would they throw in for the asking price, nope. I was a cash buyer, with cash in my pocket, so I walked away. The dealer knew I had the cash, and were happy to watch me walk away as they claimed, they could sell the car quickly anyway, just as it was.

And they appeared to be right as well, most of the cars I saw did indeed sell within days of being listed.

I was on the verge of giving up on my selection and lowering my standards a little when I saw my current car had just been listed over a weekend, I rang had a chat with the dealer and then drove 150 miles to see the car, all the service history was there, and it was due for the cam belt etc, which the dealer was in the process of doing in his workshops, it had one or 2 minor imperfections which he said he was going to put right before he would let the car go, which he did, at great expense, so I said I'd buy the car and a deal was struck. I'm happy with it, he has good feedback and is an AA approved dealer.

One of the daughters wants to trade her Fabia for an EV.

Will need boot to take a pram.

List to look at are:

  1. Kia Soul 27 kWh.
  2. Nissan LEAF mark one 30 kWh.
  3. Renault Zoe ZE40

Any other suggestions ? Budget only up to 8k.

I’d choose none of those, nor the B class. Rapid charging is very important and CCS has already overtaken Leaf/Soul Chademo or Zoe AC charging as the de facto charging standard in Europe.

Out of the e-up triplet, the Seat Mii only has a single trim and is proving to be the cheapest best value of the bunch. CCS rapid charging comes standard. EVM YouTuber bought a 2 year old example for under £10k.

How big is the pram? If it folds up like YOYO sized, it will fit in Mii no problem. There’s huge variety of sizes and design, some are huge even folded, Bjorn EV youtuber’s pram used in his car practicality video is huge.

@Graham Butcher honestly your down south personal experience is not everyone's.  Trading in cars is my HOBBY.   That is just incase anyone at HMRC is online.    Asking prices are just that.  And every seller is not a Dealer, trader or hobbiest.   And cash from in the pocket, or in several pockets is often the best offer they get.   Remember which pocket you have which amount in and you can not go above.    Ps.  Sitting charging and started with 15% and 10 mile range at 8.10, now 8.41 am and 83%.   Off to buy a used car 50 miles away on Christmas eve and expecting to be giving at least £500 below asking price and if not then no skin off my nose or the person the car is for.     PPS, almost at 99%,    60 minutes on a not very RAPID rapid charger.  RE the car I am going to see.  If they do not want to accept my offer they have my number.  But if I have to go back it is £750 less than what I am offering now that is all I will be offering / paying.  Take it or not.

Strange but is the same as I was operating at the time, I watched enough videos by Mike Brewer to understand how to buy. I was only entertaining well known dealers with decent and respectable premises and stock. Back street operators and private sellers were off my radar as I lack mobility to get down and under and inspect those areas.

Anyway, I did eventually find what I was looking for in Mansfield and I got a decent deal and what should be major trouble free motoring for years apart from the normal consumer ables, servicing and annual mot.

That sounds like some good consumer advise there, especially the rapid charging for those odd times when longer trips might need to be taken or if home charging might be a problem.

Thanks for sharing, but somehow I doubt we will ever achieve this because big business and governments want to keep the cash flowing in.

Over $60K to replace an untouched undamaged battery pack on a car less than 1 year old that cost less than that to buy!!! 😯

All because of a couple of minor scratches on the sheet steel battery protection underguard.

That is one salvage that I would like to buy!

Actually it isn't the newer the salvage the more it will depreciate in your ownership if you keep it, best to sell on ASAP.

And people wonder why EV insurance is going through the roof!

That case has a update and also a 2nd similar case which has been followed up on by the channel and that price has been confirmed. Also this channel is not a new one on the scene and is not one that bashes electric cars, it is a serious car channel that has been active for years with loads of reviews covering petrol, diesel and lately electric cars, so is a well-rounded channel, the sort that I like.

Quite a big pram, sort of the old style chunky ones.

Did not realize LEAF boot was so compromised by the intrusions of wheel arches and suspension turrets.

Car going to be a local run around but as one can get some ze40s for similar money to some 22 kws and 22s are so restricted by range then ze40 is stil! a possibility.

Soul looks good, chunky and safe looking, not going to submarine in a crash. Did not realize they were also Chademo.

Like the sound of a Merc B ev but they are like gold dust under 8.5k.

Mentioned about some cracking deals on at the moment for new cars is out down 7k and pay almost nothing a month ie what one would pay for a mobile phone a month and give back in two years if one likes.

Car market so bad that dealer might offer user a bit price less than balloon payment I expect.

@lol-lol Boot space in all town/city cars is going to be compromised, especially for carrying a pram, and also shopping for a more mature family, owing to the larger amount of shopping required. My eldest son has a Ford Focus (diesel) and the car only has to carry shopping for him and his girlfriend, and sometimes it has to spill over onto the back seat. Its never a good idea to stack bags either as things tend to get squashed or broken and end up being thrown away and wasted, I know that even with my massive boot, I often have to put things on the rear seats and on the floor behind front seats.

I'll leave this here for your pleasure, I'm certain @wyx087will love this for sure. The scale is just mind-boggling. Happy Christmas everyone.🥂

When I replied earlier to this posting, I thought about the white Superb that I was asking questions about here back in April this year which looked pretty good in the photos from a large dealer in London apart the bright trim which was missing from the windows, photo below, this was listed for sale on the 17th April and based on the photos and the way that all the good Superbs were sold within mere days of listing. I thought I'd phone (on my way back from Nottingham having been to view another Superb) to see about viewing the car. I was told that it was not yet ready to view as it was in the workshop and being valeted but if I placed a holding deposit, they would call me back when it was all done and ready for viewing, and I'd get first refusal and if I didn't buy it the deposit was refundable

They did phone about 10 days later and I went to see this car, it was a dog, smashed windscreen, dents in the back bumper, bright trim had been re-attached and was merely hanging there by a thread, a car wash would have ripped it off in flash, the car was clean but not what I'd call valeted for sale condition. I rejected the car there and then. Anyway back to the point, I just checked the dealers website and guess what, they still have this car listed for sale, £495 more than when I first saw it and they now list it as having a cracked windscreen. It's an automatic MOT failure as it is such a long crack, around 40cm and is right in the drivers line of sight.

When I first saw this car, I discovered the photos, which includes the below, were taken over a year ago, just before it was MOT'd and they still have not managed to sell it. All the others I looked at were in fact sold with in 2 weeks of being listed, that is a sign of how bad this car is.

Hooray, finally there is a video that actually is saying but what I have trying to convey about electric cars and some of their drivers and others who say, I'm not watching x or y. my time is too precious, but they also expect others to hang onto every word that they say because they think that only they have their finger on the pulse and what ever anyone else has to say is just plain silly or wrong. These are the people who are certain people's wet dream because they will do whatever they say because they just simply agree with their viewpoint without ever looking at things from any other angles and seeing if their beliefs are valid or not.

I have always tried, in the name of being fair to all people in this topic, looked at it from all sides and in doing so, get a well-rounded and balanced view of things because someone may think of something that everyone else hasn't. Just like this presenter, I have always been happy for people to buy whatever best suits their own needs, and like I do, acknowledges that EVs do not pollute at the tailpipe and that is a good thing, however, I urge people to actually watch this video and pay attention to the reasoning he presents and some solutions towards getting more EVs on the road.

^^^ Great. The dude is up my way lots borrowing cars to review and having a wee thrash on my local roads.

He will know or should know that disabled drivers, ones really with mobility problems can have issues fuelling ICE vehicles at filling stations anyplace, Capital Cities, cities, towns or rural.

Rural and small filling stations and local places for local or visitors might be where help is available.

Lots of EV,s out to the tens of thousands of Motability Customers and home chargers provided and home charging might suit many rather than an ICE and filling stations.

Truth of the matter though, Public EV charging for Wheel Chair users and others is a disaster and going to be for a very long time, and as for BP Pulse and free subscription that Motability pay for with others money, not good because BP Pulse and their chargers and system is so bad.

....................

14 months over time fro  the expected completion and many months away from any possibility of opening.

*The chargers that were there are faulty or removed. The TESLA Superchargers are there and working OK,

what a shame not a part of TESLA non Tesla so that there is charging available.*

Yes that was a pretty good review, more balanced then others. At most filling station stations there is a 2 way intercom so you can chat with the cashier who should be able to get help for disabled drivers, no such system for EV users.
