Fabia VRS Estate rear rattle video

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Does anyone have any ideas what this noise is. I have removed everything from the car and checked the seats etc.

Any help would be great as it’s killing me driving it at the moment haha.

cheers

Jinjawoo1990, just to let you know whatever your video/audio link is it doesn't work for me at least, and didn't in your other thread, it's all Simon & Garfunkel my end.

Aye, I cannot open it either.

Ask your Grandad - Batchelors, or you might know it by Disturbed. -

Of course I know Simon and Garfunkel, massive part of my childhood and I quite enjoy listening to them to this day. Even Paul Simon's later work with Graceland and Rhythm of the Saints is played in the car frequently. :)

I just didn't understand your reference at first, but I get it now! :D

Anyway, back on topic-ish, I believe I mentioned at some point on a thread about making sure the tools in the spare wheel kit are sitting secure. I don't know if that would make much difference, but that could be your rattle. Otherwise, look for coins or something rolling about. I had a 20p piece in a rear door pocket that drove me insane before I realised what it was.

Hi, taken the tool kit out and everything else and still there.

I have attached the video again to see if it works

Still not working for me, so I'll throw a stab in the dark - Have a look under the back of the car and see if your exhaust heat shield has come loose.

Hi mate, heat shield is fine, back seats are fine so I am guessing it’s the hatch

whatever above is it's not working, perhaps if you put the link address(?).

Often sound travels (like water leaks) and where you think it is it isn't., had that a few times.

A guess exhaust or exhaust hanger or nut/bolt/fixing a bit lose to something else.

This video is about 10 years old and you can get or make up cheap versions of the tool here. -

Exhaust hanger is fine and makes no noise but good suggestion

Yes it does.

I kind of sounds like something with going over a hump in a circular motion, or like something tethered or can only go so far before being held back or dropping back but I can't think what.

My mate got a van recently and discovered there something sliding about in the roof lining just above the windscreen which might explain why the radio was kept on with the test drive, something you should never allow.

Have you checked rear suspension fixing points and suspension parts and components including wheels and tyres?

Have you tried going down a rough surfaced road and a very smooth surfaced road to see what difference there is?

The video is too short for me to count how regular or not the noise is but others might have better sense or idea(s).

Doesn’t make the sound on smooth roads. It sounds like the latch on the hatch but can’t seem to replicate it.

I don’t think it’s suspension as it sounds like it’s in the car but will try a few things tonight

Have you tried either tape or thin plastic tubing on the bar part of the catch (or is it latch?) to increase the diameter a bit for more solid attachment - be careful not to over doing or make it so it doesn't open or bits jam anywhere.

I expect you've already checked the all parts of the catch/latch/lock are are firmly fixed - or you could try adjusting them so the catch together more firmly.

Could still be echoing throughout the interior of the car, however. :)

If it's the hatch catch or latch then sit in the empty boot with an ear resting on the soft part of the hatch door panel whilst someone else drives you along a private road or car park then you should be able to tell if it's that or not (and if it might be rear wiper motor?).

I am on my own mate so no chance of that. I stuck a camera under the car when driving and no noise. I will try that with the latch, catch.

that’s the full video. Thanks for all the suggestions, I will give them a try

Yes it sounds irregular so perhaps with road undulations and could be hatch catch latch.

Why not cushion your phone from vibration and secure it to the hatch panel near the latch catch and record, then repeat on the same bit of road next to rear wiper motor, you don't even need worry about signal, though you'd be better with none as Sod's Law someone will phone whilst you're doing this - use one or even two of your burner phones instead.

I have noticed tonight that I have a large panel gab between the boot and where the rear lights are on both sides. Looked at other cars online and they don’t have it (pictures of another car but the location I am looking at). Adjusted the rubber things and makes no difference. Might be that the boot is not sitting right. My panel gab is huge compared to the ones in the pictures

Then there must be a reason for this as it's very doubtful it left the factory like this and you'd hope it'd never pass a PDI like that so it might suggest the hatch catch latch has been altered, is there a new or different seal fitted to the hatch aperture perhaps.

This could take a while to find.........

The panel gap is most likely a result from a rear end bump / collison / crash, it would never come of the production line like that. Unless the tailgate is that poorly fitted / loose as a result of an impact / damage then I doubt the alignment would make the noise.

I know you said your on your own, but surely a friend or neigbour could drive for you whilst you float around in the rear seats / boot to listen / try identify where it is.

The thought crossed my mind but Xmas can be depressing enough without loading anymore depressing thoughts and if the door or seal was fitted wrong then the catch and latch (which is which?) might be stretch to accommodate, I don't even assume the catch latch is factory, strange and unknown and unrecorded things can happen to a vehicle during its use and life.
