How far can i drive on battery?

Featured Replies

Hello

I am 250kms away from home and the bolt of the belt tensioner (the pulley)  just broke.

The battery is fully charged and in good state.

I remember, a year ago the belt broke and i drove 100 kms without problem.

But now i am 250km

I think a diesel car has less electrical consumption  than a petrol one.

They have electric power steering, so not far.

Not far. Quite aside from the electric PAS, the engine management and ABS both need a minimum voltage, and you'll get maybe 10 miles before the car starts doing "graceful degradation" of systems like turning off the radio and ventilation fans, and throwing ABS and ASR warnings, based on my experience with a disconnected alternator control wire.

I have no abs.

10 miles?

i have driven about 70 miles, and one and a half hour (mostly highway) about a yeqr ago that i got a broken belt.

I was thinking to remove PAS fuse at highway  to save power.

Will it damage something to drive like thay?

A lot of considerations to take into account - Im only going to put myself in your scenario and I will probably miss sommit. I had to drive with a broken drive belt although it was 45miles and an old Cavvy 2.0 litre petrol. She was on her last legs for the last 500m and died at the house

The battery will demand around 50A for 15-20 mins in order to recover from the initial startup.  Better to bump start her if you can

Disconnect the power steering fuse - The steering will be really heavy but it will steer - You will get all sorts of warnings but you will know

Headlights, Blower fan and Heated rear screen are not to be used.

Don't use the air con if its fitted

Relatively speaking as long as the fuel pump and ECU keep running chances are good.

If you can hook up a multi meter to the battery to keep an eye on the voltage. Once it reaches  about 10v the car will start to shut down stuff.

Have a back up plan or mates who can come and get you should it go wrong ...!

Make sure you tell us how you get on - Go but know the risks !! Good Luck Lad !!

Thank you a lot, very useful info.

Po8nts at my side, this is diesel, no sparkplugs to fire 🤣.

And yes i agree to get a meter to monitoring the voltage.

Does this diesel fabia has electric fuel pump in the tank?

Yes, a tank mounted lift pump fills the filter housing.

Thank you all.

After all that was mentioned above.

No damaged to computer or any system of the car for driving without alternator?

No damage no. I just don't think you'll make 250 km on just the battery before the EMS decides to turn the engine off, oh and you'll get lots of actually spurious fault codes in the EMS memory.

It'll probably throw a fit like mine did with the bad earth with temporary PAS and ABS failures due to lack of power amongst other things. I would say that the OP is wrong to continue their journey in such a reckless manner. Personal opinions, of course.

This reminds me of Apollo 13 when they had to try and fire up the command module B)

At what lower setpoint does the ECU shut down the engine and ancillaries ? If Kharl knew this he could get pulled up safely before the shutdown ....

Kharl if you get away with this you and your Fabia will be talked about for years to come ! Its a gutsy move to chance it but no guts no glory !

Check if the water pump is driven by the aux belt, in which case inadvisable to drive very far at all.

Disconnect the PAS and you'll be fine in daylight.

Where is that fuse?

Just unplug the PAS pump.

The water pump on the 1.9D (all tunes, even the PDs) is driven from the cambelt.

But, it is behind the bumper, how do i do it?

Or you can unbolt it from the big strip fuse on top of the battery.

I will send you a pic later about those fuses

That fuse is a 50A but a quick search has brought me up fuse 3 from the left then I saw Fuse 5 from the left - This is not helping !!

What year is your car as there are small differences- really need to check a wiring diagram for your car to make sure !

Lads posted this many moons ago but its for a TDI

It changed to fuse 5 on cars from 2005/2006.
