Fuel Economy Superb 2.0 TSi vs 1.5 TSi

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I'm looking at purchasing a Superb 69 reg onwards (ie facelift version), in petrol. I was under the impression that a 1.5 petrol would be way more economical than a 2.0.

Is anyone driving a 1.5 TSi or a 2.0 TSi and willing to share their fuel economy figures, both in automatic. I've seen HonestJohn website and surprised to see that real mpg figures for a 2.0 is better than 1.5.

Most of my drive will be town - with motorway journey of around 500 miles every 2 months. I am not "boy-racer". I like the idea of a 2.0 - as I can look at L&K - otherwise I'll get a 1.5 SEL.

Thanks in advance.

On the fuelly app, my average mpg is 37.4 over 7381 miles.

50% driving in Milton Keynes between the roundabouts and 50% A-roads.

I've had high 40's on longer runs.

35,2 MPG (Imp) over 6.325 mi and 180 Imp.gal

Estate, 272bhp, 4x4, DSG.

Mostly used on longer runs, i find i get better mpg on a-roads than motorways (probably due to heavy right foot)

2.0 tsi here.

Done 10,000 miles in 6 months of motorway driving getting between 35-55mpg, average of about 42mpg id say.

Recently doing about 10 miles a day of town driving at about 28mpg

Hopefully these give you some figures to work with

Most of my driving is 6 mile round trip twice a day and a few longer urban runs. I’m getting an average 27.7 over 783 miles. When we did a trip to Ireland last year, we averaged 36.6 over 1,400 miles. But what you won’t get on the 1.5 is 276bhp in front of you, put down to all four wheels and the big grins that can deliver!

The thrill of a fast accelerating car is very short lived, as you soon get used to it.

It's a bit like taking a big-dipper ride at a theme park. Fun at first, but do it all day and it soon gets boring.

Even an F1 driver soon gets used to the acceleration of his car which is in a different league to the relatively slow 276bhp Superb 4x4.

Similar duty to Q102..MK and A roads.  2.0l TSI 220. I get on average 30mpg

Yeah. Well, that’s not true.

Oh did I say I “do it all day”?  I don’t and it doesn’t.

Really? Who told you that then? How many F1 drivers do you know, or have even had a conversation with? I know two and have met at least 10 others and not one of them have said they get “used” to the acceleration, the braking and cornering abilities and the speed, far from it in fact. They all say you have to have the utmost respect for the car or it’s performance will bite you.

“…..the relatively slow 276bhp Superb 4x4” Really? Relative to what? A Tesla Dual Motor in Ludicrous mode? A Bentley Conti GT perhaps? Or a Ruf GTR? As I’ve pointed out before, “the relatively slow 276bhp Superb 4x4” is faster to 60 than a 289 AC Cobra and it is a £38k mass produced 5 door car. It’s performance which could only been achieved from a super car 20 years ago and just dreamt about for a “normal” vehicle which a salesman, bank worker or teacher could buy; it’s plenty fast enough for me.

It's fun when the occasion allows. Makes no difference in town at 30limit bar the 1sec vroom vroom from the lights if I am in front.

That said, unless doing mega mileage, I really don't think the fuel consumption cost difference is major between the 2 petrol versions after taking into account all the money one will spend running a car.

Mega mileage, get a diesel or the 1.5tsi. otherwise, get more power if that's important.

To the OP, I get 25mpg in town and 35 and above on motorways . 280tsi 4x4.

Thank you for all the responses - and sorry for the late replies- this does help in my decision. Thanks again. Jay

I have a 2021 2.0TSi.

I get about 35mpg around town and over 40mpg on long journeys.

Do you need a superb for the space? If you’re concerned about MPG you’d be better with a smaller car especially if space isn’t required

Ultimately your real world mpg will depend on how you drive it.

The 2 litre (220) and 1.5 litre don’t weigh much difference so driven back to back would use similar amounts of fuel. It’s basic physics about amount of energy to move a mass etc.   Slightly wider tyres will cause more drag at higher speeds.   There is marginally more friction in bigger engine.  Of course if you plant your right foot and accelerate faster and use the extra power then car will use more fuel.

The 280 version is heavier, has a four wheel drive system that uses extra fuel, and can be driven in a much more sporty manner.  If you intend to use all that power then probably going to be putting fun ahead of economic driving

I have 1.4 110kw, my consumption on long journey's is 51-56 MPG, depends on the season.

My 2.0 sits about 29-30mpg urban and 38-44mpg on a longer run depending on roads.
motorway would be closer to 38mpg and national speed limit/good B roads would be closer to 44mpg.

280 4x4 hatchback. Get around 33mpg on longer trips but could push that up if I was to drive a bit more conservatively.

Have another trip to the Emerald Isle shortly and I’m going for our economy this time to see if I can ge…… nah, it won’t happen. 😜

In our MKI Elegance 140 TDI I used to regularly get over a true 60mpg at 60mph, but I was doing 110 miles a day on 70mph A roads and the M25/M4. 55mpg was the best I had in the MKII CR220.

Hi,what did you go with at the end?

I am considering a 2.0Tsi (190) or an iV Superb which I won't be constantly charging so it might affect a fuel consumption.

A 1.4 TSI PHEV without a charged battery is pretty much a 1.4 TSI 150 ps car.  6 speed wet clutch.

So not a 1.5 TSI ACT car. 7 speed DSG wet clutch.    Just complicated in a different way.

or

a 2.0 TSI 7 speed wet clutch.

Hi Vlady,

I ended up buying a 2019 (69 reg) 1.5 SEL Exec. It's a 7 speed auto, and love it to bits. In terms of economy, around town I'm getting around 45mph - and in very heavy traffic that drops to around 35mph. However on the mway, I'm getting around 59mpg !!!!  Having said that, I do drive in economy most of the time (60 mph on cruise on mway). One thing I've noticed is that when driving around town, car hits 30 mph in gear 4 - so put it manual and move up a gear, hence the better for fuel economy - I do that a lot - just to get best out of economy.

In the 2 (almost) years I Owned this, I've done around 30k miles, and very happy with it.

If you are not going to charge your iV that often, take the battery weight into consideration - as that will affect the economy. I would love to buy an iV - but was approx. £10k more when I was looking.

I think the 2.0 Tsi will be more powerful and will give you pleasure taking off at lights, so if that's what you're looking for, then go for it.

When I put my 1.5 into Sports mode, it does take off - which I do every now and then.

If I was you, take both a 1.5 and 2.0 out for a drive and drive it like you want to and see which you feel more comfortable with.

Hope this helps.

Jay.

Many thanks @jakk for your response.

I created a thread recently to find out what people think about iV and 2.0ltr petrol.

I took an iV for a test drive yesterday, on motorway the car was showing between 60-70mpg at about 65mph, the battery was charge but I couldn't tell is the car used a little of ICE or electric mode. The car is very comfy and smooth, and gearbox is lovely, compared to my DSG but the noise the car has on motorways just put me off, wind noise, other car around you noise, it felt like one of the windows was slightly opened, it wasn't, I checked. I wanted to like this car so much, amazing space and comfort but noise is a big NO NO for me. I don't get it why though, it could be this particular car, as everyone says Superbs are quite, you should see Sale Depatments faces when I told them about it, they couldn't believe it what I am saying! My Karoq is quieter then a Superb I test drove.

Do you think they have less sound insulation on iV cars, to lower the weight?
