New look heated steering wheel retrofit

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

Has anyone managed to retrofit the new steering wheel to a car with the old one?

My car is a MY18 without a heated steering wheel - so from what I understand, I need the following

Steering wheel 5E3 419 093 AH (heated) or AD (non-heated)

Steering wheel control module 5Q0 953 549 B

Airbag 5E3 880 201 K IZY

Wiring adapter - I see Kufatec do one

My main question is am I able to get a heated steering wheel now and use it with my current steering wheel control module (no heating obviously) for now without any faults? I assume some coding will be needed but no biggie.

I seem to recall @Gizmo has ventured down this path so may be able to help.

I might be wrong but these new steering wheels may use a different protocol for the steering controls.

On top of that they are most likely capacitive touch so would be a good time to upgrade to a 2Q0 camera if you have lane assist.

Just all things to consider.

The difference in squib is for the additional heated connectors.

thankfully these aren't, unlike the VW cousins - theses new ones r still proper buttons.

a big relieve as i haven't heard off anyone praising capacitive touch style buttons.

Sorry didn’t make it clear, the buttons are tactile yes I meant capacitive touch for the lane assist like the VWs where rather than having to nudge the wheel to keep lane assist going there are sensors inside the wheel to detect if you’re holding it.

that being said about the buttons but personally when I had a new loaner with 3 miles on it I found the steering wheel buttons to be really flimsy and of poor quality, might of just been that car.

ah yes, that way.

would certainly love that as it bugs me when the car tells me to put my hands on the wheel when i've been holding it the whole time, but going only straight!

i heard the current Passat B8 has that "i know ur holding the wheel" feature.

Isn't it the actual electric steering rack that waits for an input from the driver to determine driver attention for Lane Assist? Shouldn't matter.

Currently yes.

But if u were driving straight on a highway/freeway - even with ur hands on the wheel, the steering rack will get no input if u don't tweak it, hence the lane assist will instruct u to take over after 12 secs.

But with the other version, it will know ur hands r on the wheel, without having to tweak the wheel.

Actually my car does small corrections on straight roads, like small twerks to feel the resistance, if its there no take over, you can clearly see it if you let go, it will make a few small turns with the wheel, then a few larger movements, then goes into take over procedure!

Hence the small water bottle trick, as the bottle is not heavy enough to move the wheel, rather give some resistance when the car checks for resistance, and after the first beep to take over then it waits for an input, it wont twitch the wheel, rather wait for you to turn it by hand, how much, tough to tell, had the take over beep a few times, jiggeled the wheel, still it went to brake check, so thats how i see mine works!

Mine too…

I think these might be capacitive in that sense. I sometimes get a warning to hold the wheel when I have a loose grip on it or hold it at a certain position

Yep, ours does that too…

…..don’t they all do this?

You can press the right thumb wheel to acknowledge the “take over steering” warning.

I looked into this and came to the the same conclusions as you for the parts needed.

My Infotainment (December 2015 car) took the coding fine for the heated steering wheel.

Would the current modules etc even know that though? I thought it would just use the pre-existing system.

Don't think so.

Would most likely require a different clockspring part.

None of the Skoda models thus far have capacitive sensors in the steering wheel, so not sure if the brains r there to understand it, or if it can b coded in.

Maybe the mk4 Octavia, and mk3.5 Superb have it, with this new steering wheel, but I don't know.

Hmm...don't like going into unchartered territory. I'll have to see how much the airbag costs - the wheel is cheap enough so I might just do wheel + stock clockspring and see if that works then get heating to work at some other time.

Hi ZaDaMan72,

I am in the same boat? I bought the steering wheel of a Octavia 4 with the same function as you described above?
I was told that everything else would be working on my Skoda Superb 3V (late 2018 it is 68 reg car?) but I was told that it would be very difficult to get the steering wheel heating button to work? I am not sure what parts we need to change in order to get the heating system on the steering wheel working?
could you please tell me where did you get the parts lists? Other than the steering wheel and airbags?
I think airbag should be 5E3 880 201K IZY? I am not sure if the last 3 digits need to be matching; I don’t know what function/s the airbag adds to the steering wheel?
My steering wheel part no: 5E 959 542G.

what I was told about heated steering wheel work by a VAG, SEAT, SKODA retrofitted technician located in Israel called Yuriy is as follows;

“For the steering wheel heating to work, this is a completely different story, you need a steering column unit, a climate unit, wiring and coding”

obviously I am not sure if the above statement is true or not? But I just wanted to pass you as an extra info; as I am trying to do the same retrofit?
Anyway if you get any new info or make any progress forward, just let me know please? It is better to share info about the retrofitting and helping out each other?

Found anything here after all? I am in the process of researching this. Already ordered steering wheel and kufatec cable.

Hi there,

sorry I didn’t want to go ahead with the conversion anymore. Because it was not worth to waste €200 in order to have a little function and just a simple wire for the sake of heated steering wheel . So I reverted back to the previous SW.

cheers 👋
