Battery emergency

Featured Replies

Morning guys looks like my battery has died overnight !

should have kept more of an eye on it really it is 7 years old …

Going away tomorrow so hoping I’m not screwed …

Does anything fancy need to be done to the car or can I just buy and fit a new battery ?

ta !

Mind you didn’t have any warnings of low charge just didn’t want to start.

Hope this helps.

Ta popped into Halfrauds and for once they did a decent job.

Plus I found 70 quid on a gift card that helped…

To be fair, Halfords branded are Yuasa, they fit and code too with a 5 year guarantee. Absolute bonus if you found a £70 gift card 😀

Happened to me between Christmas and New Year a couple of days before a 200 mile trip. No warning at all apart from an occasional 12v low message for a year which cleared after a trickle charge. Had Green Flag out to get it started and off I went to Halfords.

Changed my own battery in the MkII but those DIY days are gone now :)

Yeah I had absolutely no warning ! It was fine yesterday then overnight that was it. No dash warnings or anything. Funny because a couple of weeks ago I was saying to the Mrs we should think about replacing it. Last battery I purchased was 70 quid a big Varta for a TVR so it was a bit of a shock when I found it was going to cost me £200 ! ... But 7 years cant complain I wonder if it would have lasted as long if I used stop / start.

Thats the funniest thing I have read in weeks!

Is this what you would have preferred it to have done?

You youngsters with your Internet humour

As the car has hardly been used the 12v message was no surprise, that's why it had been placed on charge once a month. In fact the week before it had been on charge for 8 days and the day before there had been no message at all and stop-start was working when I used it at a couple of traffic lights. That day I started the car to move forwards a few feet to open the garage door then turned it off. Minutes later I came to start it again and it was dead as a dodo.

I had ours pretty much on continual charge from Sept to April and given it’s 6 years old I’m expecting it to fail anytime soon.

5/10 If you had found a clip of it saying ' Danger unclerichy' I would have been impressed and you would have earned a solid 8.5/10 ....

I had ours on pretty much continual charge from Sept to April. Given its 6.5 years old, I guess it’s due to go kaput any time soon.

It knows and will wait until the worst possible moment …

Hmm. My big 5 year service comes next year.  No sign of any battery issues so far.  The car never sits more than a day without being used.  Perhaps after shelling out for the 5 year service I should schedule a replacement battery the following year.

That would do me until I sell the car as long term I'm planning on buying another petrol car around the 2028 before the 2030  ban.

Or is there any chance a stopstart battery will last 10 years in a regularly used car. Just chance it and keep a booster pack in the car and breakdown cover up to date?
