Winter wheels

@SkOmk4

If putting on good winters in the UK that is the ones to maybe go with.

But for many All Seasons will be just fine.  Considering how little snow or even cold roads they will be encountering.

Lots of nice weather in much of England between November and April.

I have just left the Michelin Alpin 6 on for 30,000 miles and they are still at over 6 mm tread depth.

They are 8mm when new.

  • 17” winter wheels certainly fitted over the 340mm front discs on my previous Kodiaq.

  • The speedo won’t” be out” fitting 17” wheels with the correct tyres. As you can see the overall diameter/ circumference difference is negligible.

Has anyone tried fitting 17inch rims on Octavia RS? I want a bit more sidewall for the winter and you can get Dezent rims with certificate for homologation.

I don't think you can put 17 inch wheels on the RS - I think the minimum is 18 inch, because of the brakes... Not 100% sure, though, so happy to be proven wrong.

I got a set of DEZENT TY graphite 8 x 18 (LK 5/112, 70.10, ET 48) grey / anthracite with Bridgestone Blizzak LM 005 225/45 R18 95V XL from mytyres.co.uk. Not the greatest of the experience with them, as I had to chase them for like a month and a half. They were delivered from Germany and still ended up 30% cheaper than the UK sites... I paid £1,031.72 for the whole set an year ago...

This photo of 17" rims fitted to 340mm front brakes was posted by Kenny R earlier on in this thread. Clearly, they do fit.

great, thanks for the info, Carlston! :)

I guess it depends on the design of the wheels, as while I was looking for 18inch ones, there were certain models that were only recommended for the rear axle of the vRS only...

Personally, after reading several reviews of different winter tyres, I opted for the Goodyear Ultragrip Ice 2 SoundComfort Tech FP 225/50R17 98T. I've used them for one winter and I am very pleased with their performance.

God afton :)

Are you running these 225/50/R17 tires on the stock 17" wheels and when at full left/right do they cause any issues (i.e. brushing the mudguards)?

Dobro utro 😉

No, my winter wheels do not have Skoda stock rims (used definition of wheel = rim + tyre). The rims I bought have the following dimensions: 7x17 5/112 ET40 B57.1 (yes Skoda recommends ET46 however due to the design of the specific rims I bought, I needed ET40 to clear the brake caliper).

No, they are not causing any issues at "full left/right" (and yes, I do have front mud guards/flaps).

Škoda Rims/Tires should be 205/55 R17 6,5J ET46... Atleast on my vRS

On mine the`y are 7Jx17 ET48. Anyways, got fitted today original size BF Goodrich winter ones. And immediately was shocked at how silent were they compared to the stock Goodyear. Indeed, miles difference.

Thanks for that, I though I was paranoid... This noise is one of the biggest issue I have with my new car (I have several other small complains, but this one proudly sits in top 3). The ride is overall quite silent, since I also added the soundproof front-side windows, but the main noise comes from the front wheels - at least that's how I perceive it. I checked the tire pressures - they are not that high (about 2.5 if I remember correctly) and then I searched for the certification of the Goodyear EfficientGrip tires - it's supposed to be 70dB. The noise is really annoying, I'd say it's above the one I can hear in my ~15 years old Megane.
Looking forward to compare the noise level with the winter tire set - I already purchased Bridgestone Blizzak LM005 16" and it's supposed to generate 71dB.
Anyone else bothered by the Goodyear EfficientGrip being too loud?

Mine also came with Goodyear Efficient Grip and I also have the the additional acoustic front windows. Don't have any noise complaints so far, to be honest. I've already put just over 2km km including country side roads and highways.

The EfficientGrips are among the quietest you can find. The tire noise in the Octavia is not that bad, the structure born noise is much more pronounced.

Winter tires will potentially be quieter (excluding studded tires) thanks to the softer compound --> less structure born noise. I noticed a significant reduction in noise when swapping my EfficientGrips to the Continental VikingContact 7 winter tires.

That is really pushing all my buttons... I'm probably paying too much attention to that, but I fail to understand how a 2022 new car generates more rolling-noise inside the car, compared to a 2008 much cheaper car. It'd definitely coming from the tire-asphalt contact, because I can clearly hear the noise difference when the asphalt structure changes (e.g. patches of new asphalt along the road). I wonder if it is some sort of acoustic resonance generated into the plastic arches surrounding the wheels; I've noticed those are made of other materials (with better sound properties) in some cars. I'm surprised Skoda is still using plastic.

I have soundproofed my front arch liners with deadening material, didn't improve much, except some reduced noise from stones hitting the liner.

My guess is that the vibrations from tire-asphalt contact are transferred through the suspension to the bodywork. Large panels such as the roof and floor then amplify the noise. I noticed some improvement just by deadening the passenger side floor, so I think I'm on the right track.

Yep, I followed the progress you presented on the dedicated topic - impressive work! I would have guessed you've practically eliminated most of the noise coming from the front and floor areas (not to mention the doors).

I think its mostly tires and engine. Indeed, I could barely hear the engine with the Goodyear`s, now with the BG Goodrich winter ones its what I hear all the time. Its a bit of a noisy engine and somewhat diesel like in operation. But hey, cars are now made of very thin steel and have few sound absorbent materials, notice how thin the hood is - I can just touch the center of it and it would bend...

I am thinking to do this... I didn't get DCC and therefore took 18" rims. Now I don't know what to do :) I am thinking of two options:

#1 go with 18" winter tyres and when my summer tyres are worn out, I'd probably go for new 19" rims for summertime (and hope my spine accepts bumpy Slovenian roads with 19" and no DCC :))

#2 go with 17" winter tyres (205/55R17) and use 18" for summertime

I believe I haven't seen any Octavia RS with 17" wheels. I am afraid it might look a bit awkward :) have anyone seen it or installed 17" to his Octavia RS?

BTW, as I can see that you were talking about Dezent above, do you know it? Are Dezent rims good for winter (if there is some difference at all)?

I went with 18 for winter because 17 inch rims look weird 😅.

Dezent wheels are good quality I have seen Dezent logo on original VW rims.

I am also from Slovenia and ordered mine from liderpnevmatik. When you search rims you can select winter approved.

I have 17” LYRA wheels with Continental ContiVikingContact 205/50/17” tyres. Tbh they don’t look too small. Car is vRS TDI 4x4.

I've gone for 18 inch Dezent TY, 8J - they're winter approved, but I don't think you cannot put snow chains on if this matters...

You can put 17 inch wheels as well on the vRS but you have to be careful as some wheel designs won't clear the disks and the calipers...

Please help us out by providing at least the name (e.g. Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance (1 or 2)), the size (e.g. 17") and the type of tyre (e.g. winter, summer, all year). Otherwise we could potentially be comparing apples to oranges.

(Yes, last I checked the Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2:s were not produced by Goodyear in the 18" stock dimensions of the Octavia mk4 but that might have changed. And Yes there are no tyres called EfficientGrip Performance 1 (they're called only EfficientGrip Performance) but since EfficientGrip 2 exists, explicitly calling them 1 will probably be beneficial)

So you're comparing 17" winter tyres (which BF Goodrich?) to 17" summer tyres (which Goodyear?)?

So you're comparing summer tyres Goodyear EfficientGrip 1 or 2? of which size? mounted on a Skoda Octavia to tyres of what name? of which size? of which type? mounted to a Megane?

So you're comparing summer tyres Goodyear EfficientGrip 1 or 2? of which size? to winter tyres Continental VikingContact 7 of which size?

-------------------

Back in 2014, when I had a Seat Leon, I opted for the Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance (1) 18" summer tyres as a replacement for the stock Continental Contisport 3 18" summer tyres as reviews said the EfficientGrips were the most quiet tyre of the ones being reviewed (note that the tyres being reviewed were 16"). They were right, they were less noisy, but still loud as hell. Would I have been more pleased with the noise level of the EfficientGrips if I would have selected the 16" instead? Most certainly.

In the winter time I switched to Nokian nordic winter tyres (Hakkapeliitta R2, ie no studs) 16" and the noise level dropped considerably. There was a huge difference, which was expected due to the difference in size and compound.

Now, on the Skoda Octavia mk4, I have the summer tyres Michelin Primacy 4 225/45R18 (I wanted the Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2 but, as I've said before, at the time the car was delievered Goodyear were not producing that tyre in the mk4's stock dimensions). I have the winter tyres Goodyear Ultragrip Ice 2 SoundComfort Tech FP 225/50R17 98T.

My subjective opinion:

- The noise level in the Octavia with the Michelin Primacy 4 is considerably lower than in the Seat Leon FR 2014 with the Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance (1)

- The noise level in the Octavia with the Goodyear Ultragrip Ice 2 (note 17") is about the same as in the Seat Leon FR 2014 with the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 (note 16")

- The noise level in the Octavia with the Goodyear Ultragrip Ice 2 (note 17", winter) is lower than in the in the Octavia with the Michelin Primacy 4 (note 18", summer), which is to be expected due to the difference in size and compound

So I can't say that one tyre is better than the other, however I can say that

- the Octavia feels a lot better insulated than the Leon FR 2014

- I'm not thinking about the noise the above mentioned tyres make in the Octavia (while traveling at 110 km/h or below). Rather I'm thinking about the noise caused by the surrounding traffic

- I'm very pleased with both the Michelin Primacy 4 and the Goodyear Ultragrip Ice 2

That's true, at least when it comes to tyre noise. Also had 2014 Leon FR. Tyre noise was awful. New Leon is exactly the same.

O4 is not bad, but could be better. Although it's on par with CLA Merc.

1 hour ago, Felix2021 said:

I agree. I expected a lot more from the CLA Merc SB especially when it costs at least 10-15k EUR more than an equivalent Octavia mk4.

Plan A was to buy a KIA Proceed. I think it looks great in real life in that Skoda familiar racing blue colour, has a great interior for a guy like me who likes physical buttons (there might even be too many in the Proceed 😁) and has a proper manual handbreak. However the tyre noise was worse than in the Leon so I had to ditch that plan. Plan B was the CLA Merc SB however at a price that high I did expect it to be a lot better than the competition and it just isn't. Plan C was the Octavia mk4 and in hindsight I think that's the best choice I could have made.
