Sudden loss/blip in power.

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have a 2014 2.0TDI 4x4 Octavia III estate. About 140k on the clock. Recently serviced.

I have been getting random/intermittent power loss/blip. It feels like someone is pressing/dabbing the brake very quickly. It’s more noticeable at lower speeds than at higher speeds. Happens with cruise control on and off. Accelerating up hill, or cruising on level roads. It’s just appears at random, once maybe twice at a time.

So far I’ve put in two tanks of redex. Given it a good belting on the dual carriageway (3/3.5k for about 20mins). Gone to other fuel stations and used their super/premium diesel. Recently been serviced by local garage no fault codes found at that time.

When the power drops for that brief  moment there are no warning lights on the dash. (However, I’ve had the emissions control light pop on a couple times when going up a hill, no loss in power, but it then disappears the next morning when I start up. Again no fault codes found at the service. I’m not sure if this is useful information or not but doesn’t appear to be connected).

Briskoda and Google hasn’t got me anything other than maybe a sticky turbo vane (any thoughts?). I’ve gotten to the point where I’m going to get a cable and plug into a laptop and drive around until it happens again and see what is says.

Does anyone have anything  I might be able to try in the mean time? I will be very grateful, apologies for the long post, I wanted to be thorough.

Cheers all, Pete

Sorry to jump into your thread like this. I have almost the same problem with my 1.6 TDI, but my milage is not close to indicate end of life for DPF (close to 60k miles). My DPF is at 28% (according to VAG DPF). For me usually it happens in the first 5 mins of drive usually going the same route, cruising with 35 mph (never with full or strong throttle). Quite often this loss of power matches with hitting pot holes on the road but not always. I have no idea what it is and why it happens, car is maintained regularly.

I decided to buy the OBDeleven, set up and scanned, came back with 6 fault codes. The first four I’m not so worried about (except the tank lid error). The others are being taken care of.

B11F601 - Motor for mirror fold-in
            Electrical error

B126301 - Tank lid unlock activation
            Electrical error
B10A911 - Activation A/C compressor
            Short circuit to ground

C102D00 - Tire pressure warning

These two concern me the most.

P040100 - Exhaust Gas Recirc.Flow
            Insufficient Detected
P068B00 - ECM/PCM Power Relay De-Energized Performance - Too Late

i will do some quick reading, but I fear it’s the EGR valve may need a clean/replacement as well as other components.

Any suggestions or threads that might help me on my quest? 😂

Thanks all!

My 1.6 TDI had a slight misfire now and then at lower speeds. Car is now with a new owner and on 230k and he’s reported that it still

does it occasionally. Never materialised into a bigger problem.

Just another one of the niggly problems with these cars that no one can get to the bottom

of.

I'm replying here as I did a search and this seemed relevant. Bought a 64 plate Octavia Scout, 112k on it. Seems ok, garage have checked/sorted wheel bearings (and rear discs and pads) and fitted a non-silica expansion tank *but* I can't help thinking there's something not quite right with the car. It seems to lurch/surge (only a little) at 40mph in 4th (and other times), and sometimes feels like it's 'slowing' (like engine braking). Pretty odd. Is it just a Euro 6 diesel being odd? Different to the Euro 5 Scout I had before? Something else? Paul (Hove, very helpful) sorted me a VCDS file for my audio upgrades (and thanks Pab567) so I have a full report (but over my head). Is "5231 - Fuel Rail/System Pressure  — P0087 00 [096] - Too Low and 20010 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor B1 S2  — P0136 00 [032] - Malfunction in Circuit" related?

I see EGR mentioned above but don't think that is in my report. A computer or a hardware thing? Injectors? Valves/ And how can I check my DPF? I've done 2000 miles in the car since I got it. Goes ok – motorway very easy, and some 'harder driving' seems to perform ok but seems a little odd in 'gentle around town' driving, not smooth. Ever so subtle lurch, surge, slowing itself sensation :O/  …keen to have some more clues before I p*ss the garage off (and waste my money and their time) with my mad theories and google finds. I don't think I'm imaging things    :O)

Thanks. Picture for attention (was great in the snow we had before Christmas, thanks to James for selling me winter tyres and steel wheels)

DPF Checking (VCDS or similar tool to interrogate)

Don't quote me on all of this, but fuel pressure low on the rail usually means the sensor is reading a low pressure (I mean it's quite literal) so could be sensor is going wrong, but could be the pump in the tank is not pushing the fuel to the rail (could be a little blip to drop the pressure in rail)

The lambda sensor is suggesting a wiring fault/short to earth or such (maybe inspectiong will show a wire completely bare or broken)

It might pay you to locate someone with VCDS if you don't have one, or purchase one so you can do some live readings of MVB (Measured Value Blocks) on test drives.

I always think the tool pays for itself in spades myself, a few trips to the garage = same.

I drove garage man about yesterday. First stop on the 'see if we can fix this' is going to be checking fuel filter and flushing 'something' through to hopefully clear the pipes (technical term). Was talk of 'live monitoring' to see what data/errors might be thrown out. Got to start somewhere. I'll report back.

The DPF suggestion is a red herring, ignore it.

There is a quirk on all these vehicles that happens when cresting a rise where the engine power is momentarily cut and when it resumes its slow and progressive with some lag, it can also happen on an undulation where the road drops away and the suspension is unloaded, my car does it every time on two locations where my highly sensitive ring piece detector can barely sense the very small reduction in vertical G but it does it so repeatedly that is definitely the cause, its barely susceptible because these are downhill sections and I am barely on the throttle, in fact I only really notice it when I instinctively add a touch more throttle and dont get the required response for a fraction of a second, each time my brain is alerted thinking the engine has cut out, just like the first feeling you get when about to run out of fuel.

Many other people have related this so its a known but yet unknown feature!

All of the above descriptions made me think of this quirk.

J.R. …much appreciate your reply here. Although I have to say I don't think my issue is quite this. I get it every time I'm going up a slight hill, 3rd gear, 1500 revs (etc, i can induce it with other gears/revs/speed too). Not momentarily but on-going for the duration of the ascent. Not cresting a hill or an undulation. It's beyond a quirk, and seems to be getting worse. I'd film it but until Apple develop 'movement sensation' to their phones’ videoing capabilities it won't show at all :O)

Makes sense that the fuel isn't getting through like it should when right foot is only asking for a little (and not noticeable at all when booting it as 'big fuel requests' won't be noticeably wrong if % of the fuel isn't getting through like it should – eg if accelerator is asking for 10ml and only 5ml is getting through it'll be felt, if it's 100ml then 5ml is neither here nor there. Yes – I am not an engineer :O)  …I'll see if I can get garage man to provide the science.

Thank you.

Hi there

I have a 2014 Octavia scout and have the same issue

had a fuel sensor and something else swapped

then today the exhaust flap actuator

still have the issue but no codes…….

arrrrrhh

please help…

Graham – love to help but I've got as far as having a 'flush' (don't know technical/product name) agent run through the fuel system to hopefully shift any built up residue that might be the issue, but I think I still have the problem. Next is either Terraclean (a more thorough clean of the fuel system - did seem to help my Panda 100HP) or something else. Yes, don't think any codes. And heavy foot and 'motorway cruising' you wouldn't know it was an issue (although I think it's reducing my mpg). Besides 'physical issue' my massively random and limited car knowledge has got me wondering if the computer controlling the fuel etc is 'out of whack'. Can I get a software update or a reboot?

Anyone out there with suggestions - fire away. Me and Graham are waiting. Thanks.

Hi Captain

I'll see if I can find the error codes that were showing and the part info for the replacements.

We're off on holiday on Friday so fingers crossed we make it through the week and get to the airport....

I'll do my best to forget about it till we get back then I think I'll take it to the independent VW man around the corner and see what he says.

We're at the point of thinking if we should fix it, bin it, burn it or trade it in?

Let me know how you get on or if you find a crystal ball

Yes, I'll let you know how I get on. Bought the car a few months ago with 112k on it. Wondering if the previous owner sold it (to the dealer) because of it (but there are enough conspiracy theories in the world currently, I shouldn't add to them). Not something to show up in a quick test drive. Done 3,000 miles since then. Drives ok (although was expecting better mpg on 65mph motorway cruise (control)ing really) until I'm 'trundling at 20/30/40 and it lurches/surges/drags :O/

Yes please, error codes and part #'s. Thanks.

Have a good holiday :O)

Hello Captain

I thought I had put the same question on another forum (to widen my search for answers) but it turns out it’s just a different ‘category’ on Briskoda! However that said I’ve had a few suggestions.

one person has suggested changing the fuel and air filters. They say these can have a significant effect on performance but are easy to change and don’t cost £100’s

another suggestion is replacing the battery. Looking at some videos on line, It looks possible that a bad battery could cause our issues.

a couple of years ago Kwick-Fit said we needed a new battery but we hadn’t noticed any problems and just thought they were ‘up-selling’. Supposedly a battery can be bad but still have the power to start and run your car.

im not sure I want to start taking things apart before our ride to the airport so I’ll try and research some more and then get busy when we get back

good lunch at your end

Luck not lunch….

Oh yes, I forget. New fuel filter fitted when the 'flush' run through it last week.
Feels better but the 'initial problem' is still there. I'll see about the battery. Thanks.

Graham

Car going in for 'diagnostics' today. I'll report back.

People I'm taking it to seem to be aware… “oh, yes, VAG diesel…” was first response.

It's still doing it (but driveable, done a few 600 mile round trips recently)

Mostly ok but the 'slow traffic urban pootle' really aggravates.

Thanks

Jonathan

Morning Jonathan

I’m keen to here what they say.

we’re still away and the car has been parked up and forgotten

I wonder what we’re going to return back to

fingers crossed for you

Graham

 Morning Jonathan

how did you get on?

Good.

I was/am waiting for more info before replying but garage ran diagnostics, nothing too untoward [update here once they send me the report and their pro opinion].

They then ran their Terraclean process. It's an hour of deep cleaning – see https://www.terraclean.co.uk/  for all the info.

So far I haven't really been able to recreate the surge/slow sensation at the 20/30/40mph 3rd/4th gear points it was doing it.
Couple of times I was thinking there might be a hint of it but as it stands it's going well (and, bum dyno says the car's perkier overall!).

So, it's only early days and, talking to garage there's a load of computer engine management, throttle response etc stuff to consider and I don't know how the physical state of the parts in the car and the computer (will continue to) interact (etc etc) but I'm so far pretty pleased with where I've got to. Not currently happy recommending Terraclean as the solution to your problem as it needs longer term evaluation and I'd like some facts/evidence to confirm the results I seem to have. It's certainly not a coincidence, something has improved  :0)

Garage emailing me the diagnostics report tomorrow (thursday) and hopefully their view on it (as me and a 20 page report will just lead me down a google tunnel of bewilderment).

Morning

we are back home in a couple of days and have the pleasure of our car again!

just before we left, while I was in Asda, I purchased a bottle of diesel injector cleaner (£4.49) and poured that in

since then we have not had the problem. It could be luck, timing or just the fact we’ve not driven it much

lets see what your report says

thanks

Graham

:O)

Well my Terraclean was a few quid more (£130) but seeing as the new fuel filter and 'pour in' my other garage did hadn't worked and this might have I'm ok.

Happy for you if £4.49 gets you there. Cars eh?!  :0)
