Changed my battery

Featured Replies

I changed my battery and stop start still says error when start car. Is there any simple things I could check or is it a  garage thing.

Did you code the battery management system to tell it you have changed the battery? If not it will assume the old battery is fitted.

How do u do that please.

You need vcds or obdeleven, for example.

Halfords can do it (I know, I was dubious too) whether they would do it as a charge for a battery they didn't fit I don't know. I've also read that some can get away with it and errors should disappear after a few cycles of ignition.

Errors my disappear, but if your car has a BMS, your battery won't be charging properly and maintained correctly by the car.

I'm just about to swap my EFB original battery for a new Varta E39 AGM battery in my 2019 Octavia vrS 245 (with stop / start)

I called a local very reputable VW / Skoda specialist with a view to paying them to recode the battery with their VCDS - but they checked and told me that there was no need to do this in this model and I could just swap the battery without any recoding.

Is this correct? Seems an odd thing to say if not true ?

I did this exact thing in both my 2016 1.2TSI Yeti and my sons 2015 Octavia VRS. I coded both of those with VCDS. Note AGM Battery was called Fleece on the Octavia, maybe the same on yours.

I find it hard to believe that there's no battery monitoring if you have start/stop, which means it needs coding.

Do you have a module on the terminal of the battery?

From memory, there are 4 values you can modify regarding battery.

Make: VAO (Varta for example)

Technology: Fleece (AGM)

Ah: 70Ah (example)

Serial: 12345678901 (example)

Only the 2 bold entries are important to get right IMHO, and for Serial number you can just add one to existing.

I would say they exist for a reason, so the car knows the health (State of Charge) if you just change, it might make the Alternator charge the battery more often, using more fuel amongst other issues.

My car, uncoded, just continued to charge as though my previous battery was on there.

Once coded and it knew it was new, the charging characteristics completely changed.

I would certainly make sure you do it right, with the cost of a battery these days.

Yes, there is an extra wire on the negative terminal that looks like sound kind of monitoring thing.

What I'm struggling with is why a VW Group specialist would tell me that no recoding is required. I was offering to pay them to do - and it's an easy quick job. Reputationally, you wouldn't think they'd want to give someone incorrect advice on something so basic ?

You would be surprised how poor the product knowledge is of many dealers and some specialists.

AFAIK all Octavia 3's have start/stop, which means that all Octavia 3's have battery monitoring and hence all need recoding when a new battery is fitted.

In particular, when battery type is being changed - i.e. EFB to AGM as PB intends.
