Fabia MK2 VRS Headlight flashing issue

Featured Replies

Hello guys,

I was wondering if anyone would know what the issue could be here...

I've just noticed that the headlight 'flash' on my MK2 Fabia vrs has stopped working, when I pull the indicator stalk towards me the blue symbol lights up on the dash but there's nothing coming from the headlights.

9 times out of 10 the flash won't work (when pulling stalk), but when it does, only the left headlight lights up (and rarely both).

The main beams work perfectly fine when I push the stalk the other way towards the front of the car.

The headlights are standard with the H7 halogen bulbs.

Any help would be appreciated.

Could it be as simple as the bulb has blown on the right hand side. Pretty sure they are separate bulbs for the dipped beam and the high beam

Thanks for the reply. It's actually the same bulb (h7) for dipped and main beam which is controlled by a shutter. And the main beam works fine when the stalk is pushed away from me but it doesn't work when the stalk is pulled towards me for 'flashing'.

Sorry getting a bit confused here. Do you have projectors headlights and separate high beam like what i have on a mk2 vrs

Sorry, I should have made that clear. I have the one where there's one bulb (H7) for both dipped and main beam. There's a shutter that moves up when I switch to main beam and partially covers the bulb when I switch back to dipped beam. They are projector headlights

It might be an idea if you can find someone close to you on the VCDS list that can read your car.

Either your stalk has given up the ghost, or the wire signal that tells the headlight to open the shutter has broken.  If it's both sides at the same time, odds are it will be the stalk I would guess.

@varooomThanks for that, appreciate it. I now think that it might be the stalk because when the flash stopped working yesterday, the blue main beam symbol did appear on the dash when pulling on the stalk, But now when I pull on the stalk to 'flash' the blue main beam symbol doesn't appear on the dash anymore. So now it seems to me that the stalk isn't giving any signal anymore when pulled.

Someone mentioned on another thread that they took the top steering cowl off and sprayed some contact cleaner onto the stalk contacts.. I'll give that a try and see how it goes first.

It's now No.1 suspect 😄

Ok so the contact cleaner didn't work, I gave it a spray through a straw at the base of the indicator stalk.

I remember before it completely stopped working yesterday, it was intermittent, sometimes I'd pull the stalk and the flash would work ( from both headlights) and then it would work but the light only flashed from the left headlight and there was no light coming from the right headlight. But the blue main beam symbol on the dash would appear when pulling the stalk whether the headlights lit up or not.

Now there's nothing, no blue high beam symbol on the dash and no click from the relay.

Is it possible that it's the relay, I have located the relays under the dash behind the fuse box, and they don't seem too difficult to get to. They all have different coloured connectors.

@wah007 It is useful when asking about your Mk2 Fabia vRS if you state it is a 2014n model.

@tootsorry, yes it's the MK2 vrs 2014 model. I didn't know that there were 2 versions of this car until a poster above mentioned that the other version has a different headlight setup.

Please note - I am not a mechanic or expert in anything.

It can sometimes help to have the model details shown in the bit on the l/h/s of each post, I’ve no idea what that bit is called, it’s the bit with your posting 'name'.

I don’t think this info is shown on all devices to all viewers but you only have to enter the info once (and change as required) so worth the effort I think.

The following helped another poster get the details on display. –

  • click on your 'name', very top right of this page
  • on the drop menu that appears click on 'Profile'
  • click on the black box 'Edit Profile'
  • scroll down to 'Car Info'
  • enter details
  • click on green box 'Save'.

This might save you having to repeat some information and tell some viewers the details without having to ask or have them referring to a different something not with your car.

HTH.

@nta16Thanks, I'll update it with this information now.

@Breezy_Pete Thanks, I came across this thread earlier but it was a bit too technical for me lol.

I think I'm going to buy a used stalk from eBay and see if replacing it solves the issue (fingers crossed). They're going for around £40.

From what I've read it's not too difficult to remove the steering wheel (easier said than done). Unclip the airbag from behind both sides of the wheel, unplug the connectors, and then undo the bolt for the steering and pull it off. Making sure to disconnect the negative connection on the battery first.

I'm just looking into the relay possibility. I have found a circuit, but not yet found the relay location on the relay panel. Bear with me please. Might be a much quicker/cheaper/easier thing to try first.

@Breezy_PeteThank you, I appreciate the help.

I can't really see how this relates to your pics, but apparently the relay of interest will be in location 10b as shown here:

Thanks for finding that for me mate, it really helps. I'll see if I can get under the dash and have a good look on my next few days off. I don't really get much daylight hours to work on it when working nights and then having to sleep in the day.

Hi guys,

Just an update:

I've got the flash working now, it was the stalk. On the way to work I was fiddling about with the stalk and gave it a good pull with force which made the connection and the flash worked from both headlights and blue high beam symbol on dash appeared.

Then it was working intermittently on a normal pull of the stalk, so I gave it a few more hard pulls and now it's working fine on normal pull, the flash works as normal. Something must have crawled in between the contacts.

Thanks for all your help.
