Battery drainage

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Hopping that someone can help me understand what can i do with this battery drain problem.

For the past 2 months i've got a problem in my Skoda Octavia that if i do drive it for a day when i get the next morning my battery don't start the car.

I've tried to debug the problem to see if i've got a drain somewhere and i've got this number:

IMG20221127113321.thumb.jpg.84d44bdd3183d477ad0927ad30086a63.jpg

This is the number that i get after everything is disconnected.

This number is normal??

I've verified every fuse inside the car and no change. When i disconnect the fuse from the radio (inside the fuse box of the engine) the amps drop to 0.01.

My question is the drain from the radio is normal?

Cheers.

No, it is far higher than it should be, something closer to 0.02 would be good.

No.

Which year and is the radio the original? Also, do you trip the bonnet lock to simulate the bonnet being shut?

The radio is not the original, but it has a lot of years. I would say at least 10 years.

About the bonnet i didn't test it but when i removed the radio fuse the amps drop to 0,01 so its not the bonnet.

No.

Yeah i was hoping that this was normal but in back of my head i already no the truth!!! ;)

Any idea on how to debug the radio? Or how to solve the issue?

I confess that with the radio i'm a bit lost.

I already had a strange behavior from the radio because when i shut down everything in the car the Bluetooth continues to work and the phone continues to be paired with the radio but the radio is shut down.

Does the bluetooth drains 0,47 amps???

cheers.

No personal experience of radio issues, sorry. Pretty sure I've read that some factory-fit ones can develope a fault where an internal cooling fan stays on when it shouldn't,  but I guess yours is something aftermarket?

Isn’t there a known problem fitting a non factory radio to anything pre 2007, will drain the battery or was that only when fitting a Columbus. A newer version of a component needed to be installed to prevent this. I forget the name of it. The OP has a 2005 car.

That will explain the behavior.

A bit more info about the radio if someone can help a little bit more:

- The radio is a 2 DIN that i've buy in https://tecnochin.com/.

- Has GPS, Bluetooth, DVD, USB, TV (that not work in Portugal), SD Card

- Win CE version (so very old school)

Cheers.

What you are talking about is when a pre 2007 PQ35 platform car gets a later head unit where you need to change the CAN BUS but I would not expect it to take 10 years to show up.

It might be an error in translation, I suspect he means the radio is 10 years old but may have been fitted more recently, were they even selling Win CE head units 10 years ago?

I had exactly the same problem in the same vehicle with the same Win CE head unit, once connected the Canbus system will not go into sleep mode nor the various other modules it communicates with resulting in a half amp or more battery drain.

The only solution is to replace the Canbus gateway unit with a later revision one, it will also need reprogramming for the installation list of your vehicle.

Plenty of info about it on the Ross-Tech web site.

Hi J.R. thanks for you help.

The radio is installed in the car 10 years ago, i probably always had this problem but with age the problem seems to got bigger, i don't know!!!

That's a bit out of my knowledge doing that kind of things but i'm eager to try. Can you point me to the CAN Bus that is need to get?

i found this video in youtube that is probably doing exactly what you said:

If not can you point me to the correct direction? Like i said i'm a newbie on this.

Cheers.

Another thing that is going on is i've lost the turn lights sound and alert sounds from my central console and now the back sensors sound is also doing some weird sounds. It seems that the electrical part (columns) are going bad!!!

It seems and there are some opinions that this is only a battery issue others don't, just ignore.

What are your opinions?

On the replacement of the CAN Bus Gateway can you guys show me where can i get the CAN bus that solves the problem?

Cheers.

If you start with the number of your gateway now from your scan, it goes like this... (it's a long path)

Hi,

I was pointing to ...530S, but H probably is better you are right.

But where do i found this part, i was searching and i can't find it. Only found for VW and other versions of Skoda (ex: 1.6). Can i use this part that was on other car than mine?

I put in the current value from your VCDS scan for existing gateway as the starting point in the parts program, and if you keep clicking on the supersession of the parts, you eventually should end up with the 7N0 907 530H value.

So in theory that should be the correct part (you can ignore the Audi/VW badge as they are all over your car already!)

Hello Bigster, I assume that when you say 'battery has 8 months' you mean it is only 8 months old - is that correct?

If you didn't do this before the test, I suggest that you give your battery a full charge, on a good charger at the correct rate - not a 'boost' or trickle charger, then retest after removing the surface charge (headlights on for around a minute)

The parasitic drain you report from your radio is possibly skewing your test result.

Yes, the battery in only 8 months old.

I've already received the CAN Bus gateway today and i will try to do the installation this weekend and then proceed with the measurements again and then charge the battery and also run the battery tests, again.

Hopefully i get all things right or else i don't have car anymore, at least for a long period ;)

Sooooooo... updates from this quest!!!

I've installed the new CAN BUS Gateway (...530H) and when i've tried to measure the battery drain my multimeter melt...

Now i need to buy a new multimeter!!!

But about the gateway i've got a few questions and news.

This is the result of the new scan:

Chassis Type: 1Z (7N0)
Scan: 01 03 08 09 15 16 17 19 25 42 44 46 52 56 62 72 76 77

VIN: TMBGE61Z952080524   Mileage: 191270km/118849miles

01-Engine -- Status: OK 0000
03-ABS Brakes -- Status: OK 0000
04-Steering Angle -- Status: OK 0000
08-Auto HVAC -- Status: OK 0000
09-Cent. Elect. -- Status: OK 0000
15-Airbags -- Status: OK 0000
16-Steering wheel -- Status: OK 0000
17-Instruments -- Status: OK 0000
19-CAN Gateway -- Status: Malfunction 0010
25-Immobilizer -- Status: OK 0000
42-Door Elect, Driver -- Status: OK 0000
44-Steering Assist -- Status: OK 0000
46-Central Conv. -- Status: OK 0000
52-Door Elect, Pass. -- Status: OK 0000
56-Radio -- Status: Not registered 0011

72-Door, Rear Right -- Status: OK 0000
76-Park Assist -- Status: OK 0000
77-Telephone -- Status: Not registered 0011

So the only malfunction that worries me is the one from the Gateway itself. Here is the detailed failure:

This is one thing that is very different from the old gateway:

Any idea / way / option that solves the problem of the gateway fault?

Cheers.

Do you have these items in your car, as the Gateway seems to think they are not there via your tick choices, but VCDS can 'see' them?

If they are not actually in your car, do you have old VCDS scan?

Hi, i've remove the tick from the Installation List because it was giving me errors and also the error from the gateway was there.

For example when i had the Telephone ticked this was the error that appear:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Address 77: Telephone        Labels: 5P0-862-335.lbl
   Part No SW: 5P0 862 335     HW: 5P0 862 335

                    Date: 2000.00.00
                    Time: 12:33:37

This was the Installation List before i've changed the gateway:

So the Radio and the Telephone are there but with the new one it gave me different errors.

What should i do? Should i tick the radio and the telephone?

Cheers.

The fault in your new Gateway is stored because on it's list you don't have these selected...

56-Radio -- Status: Not registered 0011

77-Telephone -- Status: Not registered 0011

But the new gateway knows they are there!

If you tick the two choices, then the gateway fault can go away, in theory, and also hopefully they can RESPOND back to the gateway they are ready for sleep, this allows the gateway to put the CANbus into sleep mode... saving power!

It doesn't matter that the car will complain that there is a fault in the Telephone, that can be fixed at a later date or never depending on how you use the car.

tl;dr Tick 56 & 77 in new gateway, store and save.  Then see if gateway fault is clear.
