Columbus gone weird

Featured Replies

Hi, Help please someone!  A few weeks ago, we were driving along and the Columbus unit in my Mk3 superb suddenly started changing stations by itself... then it started a loud on/off beeping.

I stopped turned off the ignition waited a couple of minutes and retried. It seemed ok but had lost all the programmed radio stations. I managed to rescan and get these back with some difficulty because the rescan wouldn't respond to my touching the screen. I have now noticed that if the parking sensors have been working you can't touch the X pad in the top RH corner to turn them off. They stay on till 15mph or so. Also, if I set the Satnav some items don't work by touching and when it displays 3 routes to choose from you have to rapidly touch the one you want for it to register!

Also, I think the starter button doesn't work as it did you really have to press on the brake pedal and stab at the button for the ignition to come on (or switch off).

Everything seems to work ok but the various touchscreen buttons for radio, satnav, media and car settings don't work properly. On different sources the same area of touchscreen may or may not work?

Can I get Skoda to reflash/correct the unit or is it a new one?

Regards, Andy

I do have the firmwares for the Columbus units, and just this year there have been 3x users (that I know of) that had trouble.

1x User @Carl248 replaced his unit with an exchange unit from eBay, and will probably respond to assist you in contacting if you need,

2x Users @Spudskoda & @Jonnyhatesjazz70 used a firmware supplied by me to load and fix their units.

Maybe your screen is reacting to the cold, or there is a problem inside the unit's brain

You maybe be wise to try and enter the engineering menu (holding down your Setup key) to bring up the software information while you can

The starting of the car issue, maybe a totally seperate issue, and you may need a diagnostic scan, or the switch needs cleaning (as this is another reported fault)

Thanks, varoom, the photos from the engineering meu are attached. But not sure I could update because when on the update screen none of the touchscreen buttons work!

Do you have firmware for this unit?

MHI2_ER_SKG11_K3343

MU 1433

Is available, as for the touchscreen this was not the unit I was thinking of, so maybe just a simple replacement screen is needed if the touchscreen part has failed.

I have taken a rough look about, and this might be the part number for your screen

Maybe @pab567 will be able to assist you in decoding your VIN (via PM once agreed) in checking this is correct part, or maybe he has one he can supply if this is the fix.

Yes, 3V0919606 is the correct display unit. usually it shoul dhave the problem solved, th eonly symptom I don't like is losing programmed radio station (unless the unit made itself reset to factory setup).

I have seen various posts saying that they have updated firmware etc.

Where do they get the firmware software from? I can't find any good links!

I think (not totally sure) I need MH12_ER_SKG11_P2104_1 but don't know if there is an update or I need more.

Help PLEASE!

What you have currently is:

MHI2_ER_SKG11_P2104_1

MU 0318 (version)

Available is this update:

MHI2_ER_SKG11_K3343

MU 1433 (version)

Here you have the partial contents of metainfo2.txt that tells the head unit how to update/check etc for the new software train release

Pay attention to the value at the bottom of the information: SupportedTrains = "MHI2_ER_SKG11_P2104*" which means your existing software is supported.

They are not publically available, but the file is from VAG and is verified by checksums as correct

I can send you a link via PM system, and you can choose to apply as several others have with no issues

That would be great thanks. I suppose if I'm going to do it, I should use the update if possible.

Thanks very much for that. Just a last question...

Do I just copy that file to a blank SD card or do I have to unzip it with something and just put the resultant files on a blank SD card?

Does the SD card need a name?

Thanks for the information pab567. I am going to try re-flashing the firmware first with the latest version from varooom.

If I do need to replace the touchscreen is that something you can supply? How easy is it to replace? Do I need any special tools?

Attention @pab567

Don't forget to tag correctly or he will maybe miss your message. 🤝

If you are located in UK then I suggest to get a display locally as UK is outside EU and I'm in Poland

Ok. Thanks.

Are there any guides available for swapping the screens?
