UPDATE:

New battery arrived from Tayna batteries today, only ordered it yesterday at 3pm, great service.

 

Question if I totally disconnect the battery will I lose any codes, systems that I will struggle to reconnect when I install the new battery?

 

Should I keep the car connected to another battery/keep car charged while I swap the battery out?

 

Also if I don't code the battery in, will this cause any problems, stop any systems from working, bring up any lights etc?

Ok, so you have increased from 68Ah to a 70Ah that won't affect things that much at all, however you have brought an EFB battery to replace an AGM.

 

EFB's last twice as long as a standard battery (roughly speaking)

 

AGM's last three times as long, again roughly speaking.

 

I would say you have two choices, that gets returned, or you get that EFB adapted in correctly just to be safe.

Varta and Bosch AFAIK are made in exactly the same factory.

 

I did look at their website, and you would have to pay for the return out of own pocket, so at this stage you probably should go with the EFB, and try and locate someone locally to adapt the battery to EFB and 70Ah etc as in the instructions.

Either the Varta or the Bosch you linked will drop into place.  Your old as an AGM and 68Ah, the new linked one's are 70Ah AGM and would technically drop in and charge fine.

 

Ideally get the new one adapted, but again in theory you should be fine.

 

 

If you keep the 70Ah EFB, then I would get that adapted in, the forum has a map of local VCDS users, I am sure you can find someone you can visit for a few beer tokens and get it adapted.

 You won't need to adapt the new battery, the car will self-learn the charging all on its own.  Literally keep that money in your pocket!

 

AGM to EFB absolutely Adapt it

EFB to EFB nope

AGM to AGM nope

 

The 2Ah difference between the two batteries (old to new) won't make that much an impact.

 

Swap yourself, turn on car and turn wheel full lock to left and right, lights will go out.  Ideally you are going to want to do a fair drive to give it a nice charge, or spend a little dough on a charger that has AGM program.

I recently changed from EFB to AGM, got this one. https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/enduroline/096-agm/ . Works a treat and cheaper. You will need to code it to let the car know type of bty has changed. This can be done with OBDeleven.

Bit the bullet today, had my local VAG specialist replace my AGM battery and coded it in, all sorted.

I noticed that my current battery does struggle sometimes now not helped by the keyless start up sequence. I had a routine service the other day and surprise they said the battery needs replacing soon which I knew wasn't cheap as its a stop/start 2.0TDi engine but I struggled to stay on my seat when they said it would be ~£400 😵 I said no thanks I would sort it myself.....

 

Looking at the batteries it looks like the Bosch S5 A08 is the best candidate but I'm confused if it needs coding? Fit a Varta, or Bosch (anything else really)

There are links to Tanya battery site, and a few other places too that sell them.  You should be able to drop that battery in and forget about need to Adapt it.

Thanks @varooom your a life saver, I start a new job in March which will require quite a few miles so I didnt want to worry about the battery. Now for the next on my list, what do you know about all season tyres 🤣 joking. Thanks again

Good luck in your new job, I prefer the Varta as it seems to be doing a good job for many people before they tap out.  I put a Varta E39 onto mine after 7 years, and it was not fully dead.
