Diesel Superb is better for the enviroment than a petrol hybrid Nissan Qashqai

Featured Replies

Just taxed my new car ready for collection later this morning and while taxing it online, I thought I'd do a check for ULEZ compliance and see how it compares to the Nissan hire car I'll be handing back today. As it turns out, it was very interesting, a Nissan Qashqai petrol Hybrid with engine size of 1332cc emits 141gm/km of CO2 and is ULEZ compliant, the Superb diesel 1968cc emits 119gm/km of CO2 and is also compliant.

So the diesel powered Superb actually emits less CO2 than a smaller petrol engine which is also a hybrid, so it seems that diesel can actually generate less global warming gases.

Hi. Whilst the CO2 statement is true you really need to look to the N2O Figures to get the true pollution picture.

Diesels really are the Devil's work when it comes to the amount of N2O which they emit into the atmosphere.

As @GordoGT said it is the NO2 emissions that is the big problem for diesels. NO2 is three hundred times worse than CO2 for global warming effects.

However, diesels fitted with AdBlue injection systems, targeting NO2 emissions, can actually have lower NO2 outputs than some direct injection petrol engines.

Politicians don't want to hear that though :)

Trouble is though that I have not seen that figure quoted in any brochures, its always CO2,

I don't think you can compare the readings from a new model vehicle to an older model vehicle as the way the readings have been calculated has been changed. The Nissan petrol hybrid being the newer model, the latest Superb EVO diesel 150ps has a higher rating than the previous diesel versions (despite being cleaner in reality), so we should really compare a 2023 Nissan to a 2023 Superb for back to back comparison.

P.S. I don't know what age your Superb is or what engine version you have.

Hmm, true, this engine does appear to be noisier than my old 190DSG diesel, but that might be down to the fact the newer model is also quite few kg lighter so the actual metal maybe thiner and also have less sound proofing material being used, especially under the bonnet?

Hmm, well my old L&K superb was a 2013 (13) 170ps diesel DSG (139gm/km) and the new superb L&K 150ps is a 2016 (66) 150ps DSG diesel 119gm.km.

I have the latest 2023 MY Superb Hatch 150 TDI EVO with DSG engine which is listed at 133g/km. This is a 'cleaner' engine than earlier variants which I believe includes double injection of Adblue but due to the way the emissions are now measured appears to be a higher polluting engine!

What does the EVO stand for?

It means Skoda had to have an EVOLUTION because VW's defeat devices and cheating on tests had to end and they have to get engines that could give the results required gor the WLTP & RDE2 and not just by using 0w 20 FS IV oil.

If the actual emissions in the real world at colder ambient temperatures is the same as under the test regimes are genuine is another question.

They only put CO2 in a brochure, because a tax regime is daftly solely based on it.

If anyone is serious about emissions (and clearly Chancellor isn't) would be basing tax on a combination of CO2, NOx and Particulates.
