I run these as my winters.

  • I was in Germany at the weekend & saw this superb with Alutec alloys that I thought looked pretty nice (18s rather than 17s though). The anthracite will look good with the DragonSkin I think

Question.  Are genuine Audi rims in gloss black usually gloss black over the entire rim, even where the tyre goes over the rim?  See images below.  These look like non-OEM poor respray rims to me?  Thoughts please?

I don't know the Audi wheels but my non-OEM anthracite wheels are the same all over including where the tyre goes.

It's difficult to tell with Facebook pictures whether it's just dirty but it does look quite like overspray where the the would go

Quck search on the internet revels that genuine Q3 wheels in black appear to black all over.  So, I would say those have been resprayed?

You're right.

As I often go a french Audi forum (my wife drives an Audi Q3), I know this Audi rim model quite well. It has never been produced in black color.

Additionally one can notice that the guy also painted the Audi center cap, since the OEM part has chromed 4 rings. It's not full black.

Thanks. Thought so.

Finally got some prices back for the official Skoda wheels (without tyres & fixing kit but including center caps):

Pegasus R18 - 440CHF each (400gbp)

Zenith R18 - 420CHF each (380gbp)

Antares R18 - 455CHF each (410gbp)

Zeus R17 - 375CHF each  (340gbp)

Triton R17 - 365 CHF each (330 gbp)

While some of them are great looking they are at best 2x the price of 3rd party wheels. e.g. Dezent R17 are 110CHF & AEZ R17 185CHF

There's an Italian seller listing five new 3V0601025A 8Z8 Triton 6.5Jx17 ET41 rims on ebay who will ship to Switzerland.

What are the OEM part numbers for the alloy rims?

This will tell you if they are from the accessory parts catalogue or the much more expensive factory part numbers.

From the accessories catalogue the Triton rims should be about 225 CHF each not 365 CHF, ie. almost 40% less.

The part numbers I gave to the spare parts guy were the ones from the catalogue you provided (I printed out the Superb sections & highlighted the Anthracite one).

e.g. TRITON: 3V0 071 497B FL8

Do you have a catalogue with prices included ? 40% cheaper would obviously be much more interesting...

I asked at the Skoda dealer & they only had the Superb Accessories brochure (which doesn't list all of the available wheels) & it didn't have any prices.

I will maybe try to call one of the independent Skoda garage in the north to see if they can offer different prices.

All of the Skoda garages in my county are from a VAG franchise.

You are right though, on the Skoda.eshop they are around 40% cheaper....

Is there a "european" equivelant as they only seem to ship within CZ ?

This website claims that they ship to Switzerland. However, I know nothing about them so you would need to do your own research to make sure that it's a reputable firm. Or look elsewhere. I prefer ebay/amazon, etc. as it's easy to get a refund if the goods don't turn up.

The have an English version of the same website:

https://www.skoda-parts.com/

I will do some research.

They also remove the VAT when shipping to non European countries so there is another 20% reduction shipping to Switzerland (Although I'd pay the tax through customs here which would add 7%)

Thanks for the hint.

How about these that seem to fit the bill?

I have Borbet Y rims for my winter wheels on my Seat Arona, Borbet rims seem to be decent.

I got them (along with winter tyres, delivered as 4 complete wheels) from Reifen.   Can get price on their website (but possibly shopping around will save a few Euros)

These actually look really good & from my preferred website PneuExperte.ch they are 124CHF each (7.0 ET40 R17)

The Borbet Ys are 142CHF each

Do you understand why the Borbet V is given TuV "OEM" status where as the Y which is available in exactly the same dimensions is not?

The other wheels that I am concidering at the moment are from AEZ TIOGA 17" but they are a bit more at 184CHF (still 50% cheaper than the OEM wheels though)

I found here an english explanation of the difference between ABE & ECE approval certification:

Better safe than sorry! | DEZENT (dezent-wheels.com)

However, it doesnt explain why the Borbet Y with exactly the same dimensions as V has only ABE but not ECE approval when they appear to be exactly the same spec.

That is really interesting, never knew that certification was so strict in Europe/Germany. Thankfully, or not, there are no such restrictions here in the UK. But just for my own curiosity I am going to find out why the 2 Borbet wheels are certified differently.

I'm not sure its so extreme that the police will ask you for the documentation at roadside.

But here in Switzerland when you take you car for the equivalent of the MOT, they will check the wheel dimensions & tyre sizes conform to the manufacturer homologated sizes.

With my Octavia I ordered the wrong offset by mistake ET45 instead of ET48 but I've been lucky that in the almost 10 years of ownership, I've been called for a check only once & it was during summer time so the OEM wheels were fitted.

The Borbets are really top of my list at the moment for the price.. Just waiting for a delivery date before knowing when I need to jump for the winters.

I've emailed Borbet customer service to ask why they are certified differently.

Their first reply was yes V has ABE+ECE and the Y only has ABE certification.

I responded to ask them "why" the Y doesn't have ECE certification.

I've tried to find the relevant information on nonOEM tyres officially in Switzerland but I need to compare the type approval on the cars registration form (when the car is first registered) against the wheel certificate info.

I'll ask my colleague for his approval code & post back when I've compared it.

This was the reply from the Borbet technical department.

Quote

"an ECE-Holmologation is more complicated; the wheels must have the original drilling for each car. We did this for our V-Design, but with the ECE-centering you can’t use f. e. a VW-wheel on a Mercedes and so on….

So we can use Y 7 x 17 on much more cars than V. And in Germany an ABE is as good as an ECE."

from this I assumed they mean the center drilling where the wheel fits onto the hub is oversized for the Y so that it is compatible with several manufacturers.

I'd assume to fit the superb you would need some small centering-rings to align it correctly.

However they didn't reply to me again yet to confirm (or if the when was compatible with the OEM bolts).

@SurreyJohn did you need any adapter to fit the Y wheels to your Seat?

No, direct with same bolts

But they won't fit a Superb (as 5 x 100 PCD bolt spacing), but I suspect will fit Kamiq and Scala which are similar to a Seat Arona under the bodywork.

Borbet have a useful Will they fit type calculator on their website, where you can enter make and model, and it filters to what is suitable

After looking again at the technical datasheets, I am correct that the centerbore is different.

57.1 for the ECE approved V.

72.5 for the ABE approved Y.

The Y needs a mounting kit with a centering-ring like below:

https://wildkrist.com/Anbaukit-5207

So this is the reason it doesn't have the ECE certification as this requires identical centerbore & borbet don't make different versions of the Y for different OEMs rather just a one size fits all.

anbaukit-5207.jpg

Yes, just remembered some Borbet wheels come in different sizes, but there are some that fit Superb, eg N and V which has the 57.1mm centre

Could someone please confirm what wheel bolts the superb uses.  Looking at aftermarket wheels so will need to order wheel bolts also, just needing to know wheel bolt diameter and pitch.  M14*1.5 conical (for aftermarket)?

Does anyone also know the load rating of the OEM 19 inch Vega alloys please?

Don't know the details of the fixing bolts but when I've ordered nonOEM wheels previously from PneuExperte.ch (reifen.com) they've always come with an additional set of fixing bolts.

Providing you stick with a compatible wheel, you can always use the existing bolts with the new wheels.

Out of interest, what wheels are you looking at? (I'm still open for ideas).
