Winter Wheel Pictures & Recommendations

Thanks all.

I've managed to find some eBay specials, 16" with tyres.

The calculator shows they are almost identical overall size.

The offset is higher but clearance appears good.

Being a total novice to this it's been an eye-opener, but hope I've got it right😬

I run these as my winters.

  • I was in Germany at the weekend & saw this superb with Alutec alloys that I thought looked pretty nice (18s rather than 17s though). The anthracite will look good with the DragonSkin I think

The tyre size and spec you have chosen match the official Superb 16" sizes.

The only part that doesn't match is the wheel offset ET50 instead of ET41.

The difference is 9mm so relatively small.

If I've got this right in my head, this will mean it sits further inside the wheel arch and will look like it's sunken a bit because is 6.5J instead of 8j or 8.5j.

However because is a thinner wheel, the overall clearance will be slightly more.

I think they might look a bit strange & sunken into the wheel arches, but I've no experience if ~2cm overall narrower wheelbase would have any effect on the general handling, I'd assume none a normal driver would notice.

Fitting 215/60R16 to the Superb MK3 with ET50 offset rims is not a good idea. The tyres will look sunken in the wheelarches and you might find that the handling doesn't feel quite right as you will have lost quite a bit of track width.

I suggest looking at offsets between ET33 to ET43 for the 215/60R16 tyre size, ie. between +3mm and -7mm compared to the 7Jx17 ET40 rim (215/55R17 tyre size).

I've linked to a couple of steel rims at the extremes of the ET33 and ET43 range, but there are plenty of alloy rim options between ET33 and ET43 in the 16" size, especially if looking at secondhand VAG rims.

@Shugmo what did you decide in the end for your winter tyres?
