Superb Wagon 4x4 2.0tsi 272 - Brisk Bambino Bakkie

Featured Replies

Hi! I've been secretly and silently reading many of the posts on the Forum up until now, but figured it was time to set a post myself as well!

Here to introduce my/our Superb Wagon 4x4 2.0tsi 272:

How it started... A 2019 4x4 2.0tsi Sportline wagon with 272 ponies from the factory. Initially I was looking for a Golf R variant Mk7.5 to replace our Focus ST wagon, but then I found out about the Superb 4x4 2.0tsi. With the Golf R offering the same space as the Focus, just with more power and AWD instead of FWD, I was initially drawn to the Superb due to its spaciousness, as well as its sleeper look. Because I soon found out what the potential of this car was (mostly because of some awesome builds I found on this Forum), this was going to have to be our next car. Unfortunately, living in the Netherlands, this car was never officially sold in the country. Or just a handful maximum. Luckily we have Germany as our eastern friends, where these cars were sold a bit more.

Made the list of requirements, basically a Sportline with every option 😅, and started the search. Due to my desire of the car having a virtual cockpit, but the facelift being just out of budget (and to be honest I like the "sharper" lines of the pre-facelift better, as well as not having 'S  K  O  D  A' across the boot), it would have to be a 272hp/200kw version. As well as a 272 coming the slightly upgraded engine and the DQ381, made the 272 the winner!

After the importing process was taken care of the modding could begin - first stop: Cobra Suspension to get lowering springs made for the car. With the car having DCC, I wanted to try springs and check the ride quality and handling, before selling a kidney to go for a KW or Bilstein DCC set. The results have very much surprised me in the positive sense of the word. Not only have the looks massively improved (see below), but also the handling really changed, for the better. Especially the nose diving under braking, and nose-lifting under acceleration improved!

Lowering was not enough for the handling, so I ordered some Powerflex goodies (front wishbone bushings, front and back, and motor-mount insert), H&R anti-roll bars front and back (with some new OEM end-links). Unfortunately, after a couple of weeks one of the brand spanking new OEM end-links decided it was not up to the task and broke in half, so I swapped them for RacingLine billet adjustable end-links.

Seems like you had lots of fun.

I will be on the autobahn in a few days time with my stock 280 6speed. It won't do 276kph but it's a chance for me to explore whatever upper range there is.

@Fr13ndlyGhost looks like you have been having fun, building a monster of a sleeper.

@KeteCantek snap in a couple of weeks doing the same, not sure how much I can push it as will have the wife and two kids with me.

@Bobodaclown it has been fun so far indeed! And looking forward to having some more fun with the modding!

Great story and build!

Mine is at 350bhp and I would love to test it on the autobahn one day!

Have fun! IMG_2195.thumb.jpeg.399c4b131a0b1006df08e590324da1a1.jpeg

@Fr13ndlyGhost I like the Superb3 TSI280 (even more a staged one) being a sleeper. 😉

May I suggest the next mod being bigger brakes to have a consistent car ?... 🤔 😉

Porsche has often communicated on 0-100 km/h time values but also on time required to make 100-0 km/h.😜

@Bap33 to be honest you don’t really need to go with physically bigger brakes with the stock Golf R ones with come with the 2.0 TSI 4x4. Rotor and pad upgrade along with better brake fluid will be more than enough even for light track work.

I actually think the brakes are fine as is. They are already chunky at 340mm up front.

340x30mm ventilated front discs and 310x22mm ventilated rear discs are used on the Superb MK3 272PS/280PS.

312x25mm ventilated front discs and 300x12mm solid rear discs are used on the Superb MK3 220PS.

According to Brembo, the discs weigh as follows. So the 272PS/280PS models use discs that are a lot more substantial than the discs on the still quite quick 220PS model.

Weight of each front disc

340x30mm 10.8kg (+25.6%)

312x25mm 8.6kg

Weight of each rear disc

310x22mm 6.8kg (+33.3%)

300x12mm  5.1kg

Brembo diagram showing 10.8kg weight for 340x30mm ventilated front disc

Brembo diagram showing 8.6kg weight for 312x25mm ventilated rear disc

@Bap33 @ZacDaMan72 @Carlston I see a nice discussion started on the brakes! haha

Indeed I feel as though they are more than capable enough to cope with the weight of the car - but also planning to upgrade the pads to something like Tarox or alike once they're up for replacing. I've read good stories on multiple Golf R and S3 fora, as well as Briskoda if I remember correct, about that being quite a good upgrade.

The front brakes are almost up for a change so I will know soon enough, but the rear rotor and pads have been changed just before delivery so they still have quite a few miles on them.

On another topic, how do you gets get the pictured embedded in the text like that? Couldn't seem to get it working for me...

Nice mods and you’ve gotta love a sleeper. Similar journey for mine. Came from a modded diesel 4x4 superb. Had to have the 272.
lowered on H&R with koni special actives. Racingline elbow, muffler delete, R600, silicone hose, GFBDV+ mapped by TVS engineering in the Netherlands. Including their stage2+ dsg map. Also Zimmerman formula z discs upfront and drilled coat z on the back
h&r arb kit next and super pro bottom arms. Was the arb east to fit, did you have to drop the subframe. I also have a Racingline subframe alignment kit to fit so will probs do at same time.

Am I seeing correctly that 560nm torque was measured? Seems like a helluva lot, I have seen stage 3 cars not even reach that... Stage 1 cars usually top out at about 480nm right?

With regards to the ARBs, I have had them fitted but for the front you indeed need to drop the subframe. For the rear one you don't even need to take of the wheels I was told (makes it easier as there's a bit more spaces to manoeuvre, but not mandatory).

Oh! And thinking about replacing the brake lines with breaded ones as well, once I'm busy with the brakes anyway ;)

My 220 is doing 530Nm at the wheels.

I'm running an APR Stage 1 Hi-torque ECU tune, paired with a DSG tune.

I've got Hel braided lines, EBC Blue pads and Brembo HC disks going on next week.

Will let you know how we get on.

Maybe I´m too « old school » but I don’t feel comfortable with the idea of improving engine power and torque without increasing braking performance.

If you do guys, that’s fine.

I understand you! That's why I made sure the chassis can handle the power, with the powerflex bushes and H&R ARBs, before adding the power. But the brakes are already quite good, and since I'm not tracking the car, the extra power is mostly used for some fun at traffic lights, intermediate sprints, passing on the highway and stuff like that. All well within the 250kph factory top speed the car is (and the brakes as well) engineered to do. I would be surprised if I actually reach 250+kph more ten times times during the ownership of the car, and all the other times I'm not asking more from the brakes then they were initially engineered to do. So I feel quite comfortable keeping brakes stock actually. The installation of braided lines and different pads and rotors is also "to mod" and to be able to brake a bit later and harder, so improve further on what's already there ;)

Well...Having just done my first ever lap of the Nurburgring TF....

I will say that there is enough power in stock form for the 280. Brakes are OK too, albeit I have a new set of discs and pad but nothing fancy. Stock size and ATE ceramic pads.

The suspension is not keeping up, I do not have DCC. I do have Michelin PSS tyres.

Still very fun and scary at the same time. I also saw a CZ plate 280 there. Wonder if it's a member here.

Yes 560nm. I had it done initially in the uk via a TVS agent the was 360bhp 530nm I then fitted the r600 and gfbdv+ so when I was over in Holland on holiday I popped in and got them to recalibrate for 99 octane fuel

and to account for the additional mods. Awesome crew there.
Cool, sounds like next little mod will be the ARB and front bottom arm bushes then

I have these on the front at least a kilogram lighter than stock.. and then the Zimmerman sport coat z Drilled on the back. Looking at autodoc now and looks like they have some new directional slotted discs that look good by Zimmermann

I’m sure than you’re more than smart enough to know that size isn’t the only factor in braking performance.

Increasing braking performance can mean a lot indeed!

On brakes. The 340mm disc are plenty enough. With some good performance pads in they do work well and if you do want a nice upgrade the discs can remain the same size and Aston Martin 4 pots fitted also if you want to go up a size to 360mm I think then the Audi tts brakes fit. However !!! Bigger disc mean more weight. I’ve done the ring a few times with these 340mm Zimmerman (golf club sport) discs and drilled rears and never had a problem. But also the ring is not that heavy on brakes (tyres and keeping engine cool however) compared to a smaller circuit.. for fast road standard disc and performance pads and lines are way more than adequate.

@Esseesse200 TTS brakes are 340mm front :)
