Anyone know what this might be for?

Featured Replies

Hi guys, as the title states.

I only noticed this tube thing in behind the lower grille, in front of the cooling pack after I got the car. I think it's an intake for an extra heater or something like that but not 100% sure.

I managed to get the car up on a lift the other day and thought I would pull off the panel under the fog light and see what this thing feeds. However, as you've maybe guessed by now, what I found was nothing. Nothing but a piece of rubber pipe with a loose jubilee clip on it.

I was aware the car has had a bit of a bash on the driver's side front and this intake is clearly not sitting how it should. And so this leads me to think that whatever was there was also damaged and was removed.

Apologies for the pic being quite close up but the camera couldn't pick out the tube thing from further away.

Any thoughts welcome.

Road or repair debris. There should not be anything there.

Was it an ex police car?

I honestly don't know, the dealer didn't either, I did have that thought too. There are extra light bulbs in the headlights that do not work and small button on the steering column. No modifications other than that though.

It will be an EX emergency services vehicle most likely.

if you take a look at the below link it’s called a flex siren and allows the speaker to be located somewhere remote but the actual output a bit closer to the bonnet.

this siren flute will be what you are seeing behind the grille I would assume.

when you say a small button on the steering coloumn it would have been a bullhorn or ptt button. And got any photos of the lights in the headlamps?

Another photo of a remote siren flute with pipe and driver.

The lights in the headlights will have been flashing blue lights, probably LED's.

Yeah, like he would admit it!

How many previous owners, if only the one then its stretching credibility that he didn't know but it's easy to ignore things if ignorance is profitable.

Does the indicated mileage seem commensurate with the vehicle condition? I think you should so some checks starting with the MOT history.

Cop  cars have a hard life especially the high powered variants used as pursuit vehicles, I bet its had a lot more than the one bash in its time.

Check under the rear seat for any drugs or weapons stashed!! 😄

@ApertureS I think that is exactly what that is, thank you!

@J.R. It has only had the one owner and the car is in pretty decent condition for the age and mileage IMO. I was never expecting an immaculate car and there's nothing wrong that a little bit of work and few requisitioned parts won't sort out. But honestly that's nitpicking. All the correct bits work as they should.😁

Do the mileage checks from the past MOT results on line in which case, as long as you are happy with the vehicle and the price you paid thats all that matters, I would happily have one myself as they are usually well maintained, my concern would be the dealer feigning ignorance, with one previous owner they had to have known, it would make me suspect the mileage if it is anything but very high.

Pic of the extra LED bulbs as requested by @ApertureS. Upon closer inspection behind the grille, I also see brackets for further lights. So I would say confirms that it has been Emergency Services related.

@J.R., the mileage was 84000 when I got it back in June, slightly below average for the age (2014 on a 64). There's also nothing to say it was actually a Police car, might have been Fire Service etc and might not have been getting used so much. I do have print outs of the MoT history and I think I remember seeing that it hadn't done very much between a couple of tests but I would need to double check that. Might have been sitting for a while after whatever incident the front end damage was a result of.

Yeah that’s a Whelen vertex strobe so I’d same it’s ex emergency service spec.

There won’t be anything to say it was police and there is no obligation for anyone to mention it sadly.

You may be able to see the mot centre locations and if the centre numbers match up for every mot then chances are it’s police :)

It sounds kosher and if you are happy with the vehicle you got for the money you paid then well done you!

All you have are some unknown extras and you havn't inherited a bag of problems which is great.
