USB C, wireless charging, Android Auto

Featured Replies

Our 70-plate Karoq Sportline has wireless phone charging and USB C ports in the centre concole ahead of the gear lever. Very handy and an excellent step on from the single, old style USB port in my opinion.

However I'm trying to unravel which infotainment unit we have (MIB3?) and, importantly, if this indicates that we should also have wireless Android Auto capability?

The numerous different options around infotainment don't appear to make clear what spec and functionality should be available, and all seems to vary by build date, factory options etc.

Any help or experience from others would be fantastic.

Thanks in advance,

Simon

Pairing an iPhone with the phone via Bluetooth offers the option to use CarPlay if wireless CarPlay is available.  Might be worth trying that to see what follows.

I think only the 23 and 22 plate Karoqs have them wireless. You can get a wireless dongle to use it wirelessly however. I have CarLinkit 4.0, and was around £45 off of eBay, and it's practically plug and play. It comes with an old style USB A and a USB C cable in the box, and since you have another one and a wireless pad, you shouldn't have to worry about charge either.

If you plan to use Android Auto and/or CarPlay, get the CarLinkit 5.0, as switching between AA and CarPlay is bugged with the 4.0 version. If you just want CarPlay, the 4.0 is completely fine.

My MY21 Sportline with wireless charging and the USB-C ports has a wireless Bluetooth connection to the car for my Android phone (both my previous Galaxy S8 and my present Galaxy S23.) This gives me hand-free phone calls, and access to music files. I don't use Android Auto, but the car offers to set it up if I look at the Apps menu, so I presume it would work too.

I can only speak of Kodiaq experience, but the mild facelifts Karoq/Kodiaq and Superb received in 2020 ( new style steering wheel + usb-c etc ) included newer MIB3 headunits which lost the CD player in previous MIB2 generations but gained Wiireless SmartLink.

So yes, you should have both wireless AA and CarPlay if you have USB-C sockets.

Just done a search for the update details and found this:  2020 Infotainment update

Hope that helps.

Hi Simon

My 71-plate Karoq Sportline also has wireless phone charging and USB C ports in the centre console. I have an Amundsen infotainment system.

After pairing my Samsung mobile phone with the car via Bluetooth, it picked up Android Auto wirelessly right away and now it starts wirelessly automatically as soon as I switch on the car.

I use Waze through Android Auto as my preferred Sat Nav. I also have Google Maps and the in-built Skoda Sat Nav if needed.

if you want wireless android auto I recommend https://carsifi.com/

Its small, connects to your car via USB port and to your phone via bluetooth/wifi - this adapter also has a physical button which if pressed twice cycles between connected phones (meaning in the middle of driving I can switch from my phones android auto to my wifes phone android auto)

For me and my wife (I'm on Pixel 6A, she is on Samsung A54) this adapter works with 0 issues, best part is android auto boots up faster then with wired connection, there are no android auto disconnect issues that you get when phone is wired to car (it was beyond annoying having android auto disconnect in the middle of driving just cause phone cable moved slightly) + you can change android auto DPI (I set it to 135DPI so instead of having app selector in fat bottom dock taking unnecessary space, I have thinner dock on the side meaning google maps looks bigger)

only downside is bigger phone battery drain when operating android auto wirelessly

Hi all, thank you so much for your replies and I apologise for being so delayed getting back on to the forum to catch up.

So it transpires we do have wireless android auto in our Karoq. It took a full delete of my phone from the car system (Bluetooth from the Amundsen screen and wireless connection from my phone’s Wi-Fi list) before the car would set up AA again. The car then immediately recognised my phone (Samsung A54) and brought AA up on screen with no cable required. So it appears there may have been some error in the initial setup/connection when we got the car. It’s now effortless with google maps up on screen a few seconds after we get in and start the car.

As for the MIB iteration, from what I can deduce (and from experience with our 2021 SEAT Ateca) I believe that USB-C ports in the car denotes a MIB3 system (with the hardware located in the glovebox, no SD or SIM card slots in the front as some of the older MIBs had). And as far as I have read/experienced, MIB3 comes with wireless Android Auto.

@kodiaqsportline - great info thanks; our Karoq is a pre-facelift with MIB3 and wireless AA, USB-C ports etc. It appears that at the same time and denoting the same infotainment change, Skoda removed the small ‘Sportline’ badge on the passenger side dashboard facia.

@fux- I’m pleased to hear there is a solution for wireless AA in the form of a carsick interface, however interesting to hear about battery drain - having used the OEM setup for a week or so now, I haven’t noticed and additional battery drain so I wonder if that’s a function of how the phone connects to the system via OEM Wi-Fi or via a third party interface.

I have also set up wireless AA in our Ateca, however that car has the Columbus screen without physical knobs/buttons and is much trickier to navigate between AA functions and vehicle-based functions (radio, car settings etc).

Thanks again for your help and descriptions, and if I can assist in return let me know - now I have it working I’ll be happy to test or check things out for others.

Might take you up on that offer - I'm coming up to Blackpool for a few days on Sunday !!
