New Phones...

For those that know me, know that a mobile phone and me just don't get on.

I'll frequently loose it or "forget" to charge it.

Well two moons have passed today, a friend's phone has packed up and carphone warehouse called me asking if I wanted a new one...

Last n years, where n is more than I can remember, I've had erricson mobiles. Having actually stopped and used the works phone with nokia suite I'm sorely tempted.

Okay I don't use the phone for texting, 4 text's last month. But I do want to use it for email, ideally I'd love a 3g handset that I can connect the laptop to, save buying a 3g data card. Not that they would work on linux, but hey ho...

So looking at nokia's, lady on phone said nokia 3250 was good, but n91 was too many toys for me...or it's an erricson 810i, would that save me buying an iPod though ;)

Any recommendations out there for a good techy phone, thats email good, connects well, has mp3 and bizzarly has a camera, I actually use the camera a lot; although mainly for pics of things in b&q to save explaining it to swmbo.

Not sure about these fancy glowy things samsung is it? Life of my phone is in a rucsac, pocket or the floor skittering over a car park...

But I'd love any ideas or input you have on top notch handsets (vodaphone btw)

Key Points:

Battery

Connectivity

Camera

Toys

I have the 910i and to be honest its a fiddly bugger, i hate it, good connectivity, MP3, camera is poor, has functions for word doc's, powerpoint, spreadsheets. touch screen with handwriting recognition, and a flip down qwerty keyboard, which is a pain in the rse when you have fingers like cows tits.

So to cut a long story short, I am put off SE phones now and I intend getting an N91 in the next few days.

Can i be nosey and ask, as an upgrade the carphone warehouse wanted £250 for the phone and stay on my contract,OR on a 12month brand new contract (£35pm) £50 for the phone, OR on a brand new 18month contract (£35 a month) and the phone for free.

Did they offer anything better to you?

I have a SE W900i thats exclusive to Vodafone I think. It was out last October/November, so its not that old.

It has a good 2MP camera, better video capture than W810/K750, 450mb of on board memory, a Memory Stick Duo Pro slot (upto 4/8GB?), Sony Walkman MP3 player, the battery lasts me about 3 days on average, Bluetooth/3G/infra red etc...

Only down side is it's size, but it stops you losing it ;)

I like it!

Col,

there should be some LInux platform phones being released soon....not sure on exact times scales but I'd assume by years end.

That said I have a Nokia 6630....has a long battery life, 1.3M camera, plays MP3, does email,BT,IR, quad band/3G...it's built on the Symbian series 60 platform so you can download loads of apps to it.

Not the latest and greatest but good.

The sword sound effect is pretty catchy! and quite annoying after a while I guess...:o hehe!

I have a D600, I needed a new contract and wanted to stick with Samsung cos I love them!

Samsung and Nokia are always the top phones, So it was between Nokia and Samsung, but for me Samsung are still miles ahead with their colour screens! Nokia are getting better but still just haven't quite got it! :(

If you tend to drop it alot maybe you should get one of these!!

nokia_5100_1.jpg

you're supposed to be able to throw them around a bit!!

always remind me of these for some reason...

just me then??

Yes it gets annoying when people silde the phone open over and over to make that noise

Not liking that Nokia-Streetwise...

I have a "phone" - It calls and texts. Suits me fine. Its got a camera which is pants, so I never use it. I think mines a Nokia 6230i or similar. Battery lasts a long time, connectivity is good through Orange. As above, camera and toys meant 5hit to me. ;) I have a "camera" which is a "camera" which does what a camera does and takes photos. My phone is for "phone-ing" :D

I'm just about to go for the new Nokia N80......... It's available on Orange, o2 & just out on Vodafone. Your key points are as follows.......

Battery - Seems to be around the usual 2-4 days if used quite a bit.

Connectivity - Bluetooth, infrared & Wi-Fi.....Yep you can connect it using your wireless router at home and browse the web via your broadband connection..... Also you use the drag & drop feature to load up your MP3's!!! just as though the phone is another computer on your network etc....

Camera - 3 megapixel with 20x Digital zoom & flash.

Toys - Ability to read / display Microsoft Excel & word docs, Adobe acrobat docs. Real Player for your videos. The phone signal is switchable..... i.e. you can turn off the telephony part of the phone when on a plane and still use it to watch a film or listen to mp3's or work on your word/excel docs. Internet browser that displays whole webpage and then lets you zoom in to the parts of the page you actually wanna look at or read.

I'm with Orange at the mo but they want 180 quid for me to upgrade to this phone .... even though i'm due my upgrade etc...... so i'm off to o2 as they only want 50 quid for it!!!!! and it's a better tarif than my orange one!!!!!

Hope this helps

Dave.

What about a 9300 from nokia. It's about the same same size as the 6310i and you get a full keyboard on the inside as per the 9500 and whole 9*** brick series.

Nice phones.

Thanks for the input, some things to mull over for sure.

Had the P900, agree was a good phone, but the Bluettoth and subsquent gprs modem support was pants. Main reason I'm really thinking about nokia.

Todays task find out which ones work with linux, if any ;)

or the floor skittering over a car park...

:D tend to throw mine around a bit.Loz,whether it looks rubbish that Nokia is interesting if it's unbreakable.Which one is it?

People slate Nokia but have fiddled with other phones and find them frustrating.Good battery life too.

The thing that would worry me,especially if you are prone to losing them is the fact you have so many eggs in one basket (mp3,camera etc etc) bit of a pain if you lose in effect your whole life! (and the man on the market who unlocked mine had an awful lot of unboxed new phones that looked rather 'warm' shall we say.

And a queue of people flogging him more!

Nokia all the way:thumbup: ( + a good protective case!)

Best "unbreakable" one I had was the Siemens M65 - never managed to break it and believe me I tried :D

I'm waiting for the new Sony-Ericsson K800i to be released,3.2 mega-Pixel camera,Proper flash and some other stuff.

Due out very soon.

Anyone work for Vodafone on Briskoda who knows when they are getting them and can sort me a good deal out???

As i've had some tempting offers from other networks recently but have been with Vodafone for 10 years now.

I've just upgraded to the Nokia N80 from a SE K750i. Ticks all of the boxes, EXCEPT battery life. I've had to charge mine up every night since I've had it. I think using wi-fi kills it.

Other than that, its a great phone. Tha camera produces really good shots for a phone. Connectivity wise, it has wi-fi, bluetooth, and infrared. The web browser is surprisingly good. (Can view briskoda anywhere now!:) ) It has an mp3 player too, which seems to be the standard these days. A 128MB mini SD card is supplied, but they are fairly cheap so you could upgrade to 2GB for about

I'd look at the MDA/XDA/M Ranges. It depends which one you want. if you're using emails they sych with exchange using "push" mail www.mail2web.com for a freebie exchange hosting with 1gb of space (ms version), and they also support easy access of multiple mailboxes. the o2 xda exec or mini s come with keyboards for ease of use, and if you dont have cluttering huge fingers then its a dream to use. All play MP3's, AAC, WMA, and more with 3rd party apps (you can get more off www.freewareppc.com).

The exec comes witha 640x480 screen and minis with a 320x240 but both run tomtom too if you feel the urge.

Both have wifi, bluetooth and allow you to access shares on remote computers for transferring files to them if you cant be bothered to walk to your pc.

I wanted the N80 myself but found a few problems. its still series 60 which at the best of times isnt reliable enough (i've had 3 S60 phones now and struggled), the phone is just too thick to type on.. example, if you're writing an email and need to clear a letter (backspace) the C button is on the higher part of the phone and i can see RSI deveoping a lot sooner trying to wrench your thumb up to that button. Camera is good but wont be a patch on the SE's, but then again the xda cameras are pants.

I've heard the wifi implementation on the N80 isnt all its cracked up to be and was put in as an afterthought. The windows mobile implementation is spot on.

Having used an SE with the spacebar in the wrong place (comeon when was the space bar where Ctrl is on a keyboard?!?!), a nokia and a windows mobile... i would always go windows mobile

Another vote for the N80 here, looks like a good all rounder, I have always liked Nokia slide phones (had the 7650).

I'm getting mine next week with a bit of luck

Where is the cheapest place/best deals to get the N80 from ? about 200 anytime anyphone minutes....not bothered about texts ....pay monthly

I've got a N80 the first Nokia I've ever had and I must say I'm very impressed. I've currently got it set to say the callers name when it rings which is quite fun as I've changed my wives name to "Jo Big Breasts" which is quite entertaining when I don't pick the phone up quick. I had a m2000 (orange PDA) think it's the same as the XD ii and it was completely tosh. It wouldn't bluetooth with anything and was more PDA based (although very very good as a PDA) with some phone software bolted on to it which didn't work to good. It ended up been replaced three times and after a bit of research I found that Orange on the continent had acknowledged their was a problem with this phone but not in the UK.

Dave,

Yup it does, looking at O2 myself.

I've been with Vodaphone since erm '95, paying a good tarrif each month.

Now I am stunned by a phone call and shop visit. For a "renewal" it will be more expesive no matter which way I slice the options to renew than to walk into a store and get a new contract.

However if I get a new contract on voda, and try to transfer my number it's seen as an upgrade and I'll be paying for the handset...

So now it's trade off for a new number or paying out for a handset that I could get for free if I had a new number.

What I'll end up doing I think is converting to PAYG my exisitng number and leave it on the desk, hardly anybody calls me anyway ;)

I guess I'm the only one that hates the N80 then :(

Told you Tom ,you just gotta get used to it.

And ignore the battery life... ;)

N70 or K800i cybershot with 3.2MP camera :)

I ended up taking the o2 N80 back!!!!!! First one was faulty and the second was working ok....... Only to discover....... That o2 have noi coverage within about 200yds of my house!!!!! Even though their coverage map said it was good quality coverage with no blackspots!!!!! How old are the coverage maps???

I'm pretty sure i'm gonna go for the SE k800i now though on vodafone (which i know works in the house) as they want over a hundred quid for the N80 on vodafone too.

Cheers

Dave.

Another vote for the MDA type phones from me, I have the Vario with the slidey-out keyboard. It's a fantastic bit of kit and the one downside I've found so far is the battery life when using the wi-fi but as I usually stick it on the PC to synchronise whenever I'm home that does the job.

Have a look at the carphone whorehouse. At the moment they have a few good deals on. Over the course of a contract it may even work out cheaper to get a better tarrif too.

(oh and with Orange and an 18 month contract, their broadband service is free)
