Skoda SIM required for wireless Apple CarPlay?

Featured Replies

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, but my 23 plate Karoq Sportline (standard audio set up) is coming up for its 1st birthday. Decision time for the built in SIM I believe.

I notice that if my phone wifi isn’t on the wireless CarPlay doesn’t work. So can I safely assume wireless CarPlay needs the car SIM to be active to work??

I don't believe so. I don't know about Carplay (not an Apple fan) but wireless Android auto works fine without any active sim. My free 12month infotainment subscription expired long ago but AA still works fine. AFAIK all it needs is the car wifi enabled, the phone then connects using wifi to the infotainment system to use the car display. I assume Carplay works in a similar way.

If the IPhone WiFi is off then  CarPlay cannot link wirelessly to the phone. I was sitting in the services at Leigh Delemere this lunchtime and couldn’t access my email on my IPhone which was showing that it was using WiFi and not 5G. Disconnected the WiFi from MySkoda 9345, 5G restored and CarPlay stopped. Reconnecting WiFi to MySkoda9345 and CarPlay working. WiFi network MySkoda9345 is the internal car WiFi without a working sim you would not be able to have a hotspot for other devices without SIM cards. Of course if you have an iPhone with a SIM card it can act as a WiFi hotspot for other devices.

I thought that Android Auto connected to the car with bluetooth

AA uses Bluetooth to establish a connection with the car but data is transmitted between the phone and car using wifi-direct.

First, no data is transmitted over a wire when using wireless Android Auto, but instead of using Bluetooth, the system uses Wi-Fi Direct for music and data. Phone calls are the only thing going over Bluetooth when the system is in use.

The main reason that Android Auto Wireless uses Bluetooth is to establish a connection each and every time you enter your vehicle. Your car and phone will connect over Bluetooth, tell each other that wireless Android Auto is supported, and start the system. In a car that natively supports wireless Android Auto, this is handled by simply pairing your phone to your car.

Hi Timwolf,

Did you find a solution? Im having the same problem in my Skoda. When connected by wifi to apple carplay it’s then not utilising my phones network connection so no data unless i turn off wifi which defeats the object of having car play when trying to use maps etc.

What happens if you make the phone the hotspot for the car rather than connecting the phone to the cars hotspot.

I was thinking the same actually earlier when playing around in the car. I can connect ok to my phones personal hotspot, but I need to try it whilst out on the road tomorrow. But it’ll be a bit annoying if you have to keep manually connecting, maybe it’ll do it automatically tho?!

Just been re-reading this thread and checking my earlier post. I initially setup Carplay connection wirelessly for just Itunes. I was using the Skoda built in Phone functionality. But it only worked when Bluetoothed to my phone using the MY Skoda 9345 connection which meant that my 5g Iphone  used the internal Skoda WIFI for internet access. I could see on the Carplay screen and on my phone that it was using wifi. So I switched to using the Phone app on the Iphone  via Carplay.  Carplay launches and connections automatically, I can see on the Iphone screen and the Carplay screen that 5G is in use by the Iphone., Unfortunately I can't recall out who I did it, I'm guessing that I went through the Menu system.

I’ve had to turn the in car WiFi off in my Superb thus losing the wireless CarPlay as I got fed up of the SatNav, the oem Skoda fitted one as well as Waze/Google Maps getting the position wrong, sometimes by 50 miles, that confused the in dash speed alert into forever chiming and rendering the ACC unusable.

Strangely, some days it would be fine but then other days, no chance!

This is what I need to work out how to do, leave the wireless connection so car play works but make it use the phones network connection for data 🤔

I was trying to find the actual screens and setup whilst sitting outside my house just now. On my Iphone I switched on WIFI connected to 'My Skoda 9345' and no internet access as I expected, then the phone picked up the house WIFI and connected at which point Carplay in the Karoq lost the connection. Spent 10 minutes trying to recover and failed, Decided to go back to square 1, Delete the Iphone from the Karoq, deleted 'My Skoda 9345' from the Bluetooth and WIFI of the Iphone.

This is what I did to reconnect without using Skoda inbuilt WIFI.

Touch the MENU button, select Mirrorlink/Smartlink, touch Mobile Devices to do a search, which should detect the Iphone, and display a code. On the Iphone select Bluetooth from Settings and the code should be displayed,  they should then PAIR.  When APP is selected Carplay screen displays the Iphone Icons with 5G not WIFI, as required. On the Iphone  Settings/B;luetooth/My Skoda9345 if you click the (i) for Information it should display a button to Launch Carplay automatically make sure this is selected.

Thanks for this. I hadn’t even thought to delete everything and start again! I’m trying this tomorrow, will report back :)

Something else I’ve just remembered. On the menu screen selecting telephone displays a screen which says the phone is via CarPlay and gives the option for Bluetooth. I leave it on CarPlay but I guess if it’s Bluetooth you d need to select CarPlay.

For what its worth - some images of the various screens after setup. You caan see that the Iphone remains on 5G, there is no WIFI network in use, and seemingly no Bluetooth in use either. I think that Bluetooth is used initially to establish a connection which then switches to a direct or private wireless connection - which is not the same as a WIFI network connection.

Thank you so much for all the advice and screenshots. I was away with work last week so finally got the chance to sit in the car and have a play around and just like you nothing seemed to connect right but once I deleted everything and started again it seems to be working now and connection is working but not again the internal car wifi which is perfect!

I can’t think of any other reasons why would need an active sim plan on the actual car now?!

There ia one issue with this setup. On virtual cockpit if you want to see the phone it just appear “Apple Carplay”. You cannot scroll from wheel button through contacts and make a call. This is possible only if you switch to bluetooth from infotainment display. But then the Carplay is disconnected. The setup is working on Android Auto (you have simultaneously Android Auto and Phone connected on BT and available on Virtual Cockpit)

Your right, until Škoda allow CarPlay to access the virtual cockpit it’s a limitation. Latest version of CarPlay does support it though.
