Normal startup noise 2016 EA888 2.0 Video included

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I am driving a fair distance to look at a 2016 Mk3 VRS.

The dealer has sent me a startup video (as i requested) but I dont know if it sounds 'normal'

Does this sound normal to people?

Many thanks

Sam

That sounds pretty 'rattly' to me for a TSI. What is the mileage, Is there any record of timing chain and tensioner replacement?

It's on 85k, no record of any timing parts being replaced 😞

There doesn’t need to be, at that age and mileage. From my understanding…

sound like mine tbf. do you know if that was a warm start or cold start?

mine is quite rattily on a cold start. less so when warm. They aren't the quietest of engines though.

thanks for responding, it was a cold start

It does sound a bit rattly but in all honesty I havent checked my own to see how it sounds.

I would check other Youtube videos, I think you'll find a little rattle is normal as the tensioner works from oil pressure. Although the revised tensioners from 2012 (I believe) has a function to stop the tensioner losing all tension, it will still lose a little otherwise it would surely over-tension at points?

I had a mk6 Golf GTi and that, along with the mk2 VRS had the earlier EA888 which were prone to tensioner failures before changing. I changed my original tensioner, cost me £1300 but there was other bits on there as well.

Other than a slight exhaust blow, that all sounds fine.

Mine is also noisy on cold start since day 1 (5km). :) I can't tell whether this one is louder or not.

On working temperature and if you disengage all electric consumers it is very silent. Maybe this should be correct test.

My hearing is crap, but that start up sounds pretty crap even still.

First start of the day, or when the car has sat is a Cold Start.

Different though in Winter & cold weather and oil at or around freezing / ambient temp, or maybe UK July and mid teens, celsius ambient / so oil.

Maybe only slight difference.

Maybe less noisy with a Pre WLTP VW Engine with 0w 30 FS III or 5w 30 FS III  than 2018 on and 0w 20 FS IV.

?

So what servicing has it had?

Spark Plugs replaced at least twice.

Fresh air filter in now

What else has it been getting or there is a record of?

That sounds like a Tdi but I'm guessing it isn't.

Sounds like the oil isn't getting to the head when cold try a thinner engine oil dose the sound go once you have oil pressure

Not sure what oil was used on last service lol. The receipt just says "oil and filter" and the cost. So I'll get it booked in to be done. I got the VAQ serviced after picking it up and got the DSG service booked for next week (due in 3k miles) I had VCDS on it and could see one of the cam magnets might need replacing as the actual value for exhaust cam was very sporadic whereas intake was closed to or just hoovering around the specific/requested value.

The vrs ea888 gen 3 likes good oil and likes to be driven hard to clear out the intake track.

What oil would you recommend? Called up a couple of places  and some recommend 0w30 and others have said 5w30. Looking through previous invoices (but not most recent) millers 5w30 was used but it looks like the last oil change was done at a completely different place

I would go with Millers Oils NANODRIVE that's what I use doesn't burn a drop warms up well and no issues over 6 years of using it
