Power Steering Issue – Need Help from Fabia Owners! (OBD Report Included)

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

I’ve been trying to figure out an issue with my 2007 Skoda Fabia 6Y (petrol), and I thought I’d ask for your advice since I’ve already looked around on some forums and haven’t found a clear solution.

So, here’s the problem: When I start the car, the power steering works fine, but if I drive for a while and then turn the car off and on again, I get the 01309 - Power Steering Control Module No Communication error, and the power steering stops working. This happens more often when it’s warm outside, and I can’t figure out what’s causing it.

Before anyone asks, I did check the power steering fluid, and it was at the minimum level. I’ve since topped it up, but the problem is still happening, so I’m not sure if that was the issue or if it’s something else.

I’ve checked a few forums, and I’ve seen similar issues with other Skoda models, but I’d love to hear from anyone who’s had this specific problem. Has anyone dealt with something like this before? Any tips on what might be causing it or how to fix it?

Here’s the full OBD report for more context:

Remove cabin fuse #7 and clean the contact surfaces. Then put it back in, noting if it feels loose.

Then if the problem still happens, check the flat strip fuses in the fusebox above the battery.

The power steering fuse is a 50 (or maybe 60?) Amp one with the thicker of the two red/black wires going to it.

Examine the metal strip very carefully for cracks, photograph and post here if unsure.

If you do find fuse 7 is dirty, corroded or loose, you should probably also find the fuse for your turn signals and look for similar corrosion, since that is also reported as an intermittent fault.

I had the same issue in my 2004 1.2 HTP.
The real problem was the actual connector on the steering pump. It was corroded very much, so I advise to check that Power and communication as well! Clean with contact spray and plug-unplog more times, to get some friction on the metal contacts..... if that solves for a short period, but problem came back, I advise you to change the complete connector to new ones.... or just the metal contact pins inside...
You can locate them from the fog light side.

Update for anyone following my issue:

I finally fixed it

Here’s what I did before solving it:

  • Checked 12V supply (battery/alternator).

  • Checked fuses, wiring and connectors, cleaned them with contact cleaner.

  • Checked fluid level (saw a small leak at the rack, but still OK).

  • After all that, the pump itself was the issue.

👉 I replaced it with a used TRW pump (100€ + shipping).

Notes for anyone else:

  • Always do the tests first (12V, fuses, wiring, fluid).

  • Make sure you get the same pump model (TRW) or an equivalent.

  • Replacement is not complicated with basic tools.

  • After fitting, just bleed the system by turning lock-to-lock with the front wheels lifted.

  • No coding needed if you install the same type of pump.

I’ll add two YouTube videos below that helped with the replacement.
