Fast Practical Car?

Featured Replies

I'm sure I've posted something like this before, but I can't seem to find it.

I'm after suggestions for a quick car that has a large boot. It doesn't necesarily have to have 5 seats or be a saloon/hatch, the more interesting the better. Petrol/Diesel is welcome as are any configurations of gearbox / driven wheels.

Budget is around

Volvo S80 or S60

Sorry for swearing :-) Vectra 3.2 GSi?, Mondeo ST220.

New age scoob's have a decent boot, but running costs are high and equipment is sparse when compared to other kit.

Early Jag XKR.

Legacy has a decent boot and you can get some nice engines in that. Guess it comes down to what "fast" means lol!

I agree - easily done - a Jag XJ220 engine transplant in a transit makes for great traffic light grand prix's!

As seen at Goodwood last weekend (4th fastest for quite a while no less!)

If that can be done for 15k, I'm off to find myself a tranny (Ford Transit btw, not a ... oh nevermind.....)

Have you considered an Octy II vRS? ;)

He said "fast" ;)

Old Audi RS2 Avant ?

I was also going to say Mundano ST220 estate but someone got there first :)

Merc AMG estate ?

Subara Forester Turbo (STI spec), perhaps the ugliest car ever made, but relatively nippy as an import. The latest UK spec 2.5XT should be reasonably good too, but not sure if it's within your £15k budget.

There is a new version of the Legacy estate on the way too, but same budget argument applies.

If you can cope with the badge, I think I've seen a VW Sharan VR6 on the roads in the past...

Just a few off the top of my head

GMC Syclone. one lives in my fantasy garage for biking trips. I remember Jeremy Clarkson beating a Lambo Diablo in the 1/4 Mile in one on Top Gear, back in the day.

Subaru Baja, I doubt that any live in the UK though :

ps. having enjoyed driving a lil' Fiesta, I'm partly thinking Fiesta Zetec-s and a sporty van... but I wouldn't want to lose the vRs....

Lotus Carlton

Merc E500

Audi S8

Alpina 7 series

Galant VR4 estate.

Oooo, good call  Rapid enough for The Law, but is it spacious though ?

Or, on the subject of ex-Police, buy two Volvo 850 T5Rs and keep one for spares.

Are there any good ones left though ?

Check the insurance on Alpina's,

very expensive compared to the BMW near equivalent.

And mostly all Switchtronic.

Some good suggestions there cheers. I have been a fan of the larger Subaru's for a while, I'm just waiting for the price of a spec B to come down a bit.

I was looking at Alpina's last night on Autotrader. Very nice and quite exclusive.

Some of the suggestions are a bit over my limit, but worth considering in fantasyland.

The quick Audi's are always near the top of my list, but they hold their value like a dead Scotsman holds onto a 50p.

The VW W8 estate would be a right laugh IMO. A bit of debadging would surprise a few boy racers at the lights.

I'm off to check out the cost of AMG models now, although I predict they may be prohibitively expensive.

I think you'll be surprised at what money they go for............

My team lead just bought a Legacy 3.0R Spec B and won't shut up about it! It has 10k miles on it and is on an '04 or '54 plate and is fully specced up. He paid 16k for it and apparently it had been on the forecourt for 20k a few weeks before, so sounds like dealers are willing to cut a good deal to shift them :D

Lovely car, lovely exhaust note (although it could be improved with a decat ;)) and rides extremely well :D
