Skoda Rapid 1.2 Tsi 2015 hot engine start problem after a road trip

Featured Replies

Hello Guys.

I have a rapid 2015 1,2 TSI and sometimes after a road trip the engine dont want to start only after 10 keys , this occours only time to time so i dont have the posibility to get to the mecanic when it happens.

The fuel pump its new , the starter its good its rotate , Spark plugs changed , the cable from the spark plugs are changed.. No VCDS error , no battery error . I dont know what could be.. this happens only time to time . i went to 3 mechanics and no problem has been found.

The car start then dies , and after that i have to give it like 10 15 keys to start again or let it stay like 15- 30 min to cool down and then it starts
I have a new appointment at the mechanic next week to see what could be..

TY!

Can we assume the Air Filter is new or very clean and the airbox checked for nothing obstructing, no mouse nests?

did they check gasoline is goin normally in cilinders, or theres no spark. it can be only one of this.

on my friends car, not a skoda, but renault, in the fuel tank, on the cap there is a small valve, like a small hole, plus a large vent.

it was clogged for him and during a long drive he could no longer start because the fuel supply system was under pressure. after 15 minutes of standing, it returned to normal and started normally.

it is necessary to check whether it throws fuel at the nozzles.

The air filter is new i change it evry 10.000km and no mouse or somthing obstructing , this problem occours from last year and i didnt find the solution.

i will tell them about the gasoline in the cilinders and the valve from the fuel tank. The thing its that the problem just ocours time to times , the rest of time works perfectly

I had a problem with the fuel tank cap on one car I owned, removing the cap caused a little sigh as air rushed in!

the car was fine afterwards. Don't forget to replace the cap.

On my Ford Focus the problem was again a fuel cap but this one left me crossing a roundabout with my caravan

it took a long time to sort out, finally by a car tech reading all the alerts put out by Ford over several years!

  • the car was fine towing and cruising just idling under some circumstances the engine would stop, by the time

  • a breakdown van arrived the engine would restart and no fault recorded.

after thought.

Maybe to get better replies, can you confirm if this an early chain driven cam shaft 8V engine, or the later belt driven 16V engine - I know SEAT were a bit slow in changing over to the later engine in some small cars?

Turbo/exhaust at the front = early chain driven cam shaft 8V engine.

Edit:- as VCDS is not seeing/reporting any issues, I'd think that it is not any crankshaft sensor, so maybe engine coolant temperature is giving out wrong values but they are still within the expected temperature window. The fuel tank purging system might need checking as well.

Hello its an early chain driven cam shaft 8V , 1.2 TSI it has turbo , i changed the chain at 80.000 km now the car has 120.000 i had no problem with it . i changed it couse it made sounds at the start of the engine.

I've just added to my previous posting - sorry!

Ok, back to basics. Does it sound like it is spinning normally but not trying to fire, or spinning slowly?

There is a video on YouTube volkswizard trying to fix an Ibiza start problem. Take a look he fixed it.

I think this engine has the same wasted spark coilpack module that my old 1.4 16v mpi Octavia mkI had that used to fail every 60k miles or so and was always sensitive to hot / and or cold when starting to fail - especially after a long run. Could be hard to start and / or stuttery when you floored the throttle as it tended to drop to two cylinders. Easy/cheap to replace. It didn't throw codes initially until really bad. One unit that was failing actually ended up with a big hole in it - that one fully dropped to two cylinders! IAs they were relatively cheap and I'd had a few fail in the cars life (19 years owned by the family - until my son broke it!) I even bought a spare.

As mentioned above double check you don't have a vacuum in the fuel tank after a run - it'll hiss as you undue if it has.

When not starting it's worth dropping to first principals - after turning over for a while does it smell of petrol at the exhaust tailpipe, connect one of the leads to a spare spark plug and position against the engine metal - does it spark on turning over.

@Adrianul , are you still there, if so have you solved this problem?
