Infotainment Unit Issues

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm having big trouble with my Scala - when driving, the infotainment unit/display keeps re-starting, the odd thing is this is the second Scala I have had with this issue, the previous one spent so much time at the dealers in the end they gave up and we struck a favourable deal for a replacement car!

What happens is that after about 90 minutes of drive, the audio will cut out, about a minute later the display will go blank, followed about two minutes later by the unit rebooting. This cycle will then repeat for maybe 30-60 minutes when oddly it will settle down again - this is useless when using it with the phone as a sat-nav display.

As I have suffered before, this time I went straight to head-office as I am not investing a penny in this repair given the past experiences where I lost out a fair bit. They have booked it in for a look at, over a couple of days, I'm currently trying to get them to organise a free loan car now.

Has anyone else had issues with the head unit in the Scala, I can't believe I have had two dodgy cars in a row??

I have ruled out the phone as it does it when not using the sat-nav connection, it's not the MP3 player as it does it while using the radio.

From what you describe, I had this issue on a brand new 2020 Scala. It’s apparently caused by the infotainment system trying to connect the automatic emergency alert system to G4/G5 internet. It only happened to me in certain areas of the country where the coverage is a bit patchy. It happened to me particularly round the South East, Whitstable etc. It’s a well known issue and Skoda Cambridge knew all about it and sorted it under warranty since when I’ve had no problems at all.

Thanks,

was it a firmware/software update that fixed it?

My local Skoda branch applied an update a short while ago but since then i've only done short journeys so not had a full chance to test it. I have a longer drive this weekend and it has failed before on the same trip so will know more by next week.

Something similar happened on our Mk 8 Golf.

It was cured by a software update but others report needing electronic modules needed replacing.

It was a couple of years ago but I think they replaced a part

I have a Scala Monte Carlo 2020 model. A few years ago, maybe in 2021, I had problem with entertainment which randomly rebooted. I sent a mail to Skoda Connect support team and then I received an OTA update and problem disappeared.

You can also check connection status (white globe)

Thanks, very interesting, I never knew what the white globe meant :)

I have a 2023 Skoda scala and I have the same issue. It reboots every 30 min and my Skoda dealer has applied the latest software and still happening. I have tried it with iPhone and Android same story. What do you guys recon how should I approach this with my dealer? I have this for a year now and super annoying. I can't use it at all because how unreliable and dangerous it is to do anything during driving.

It's still under warrantee so take it back and stand your ground. Read up on the consumer rights act.

I had the chance to do a long drive this weekend, sadly the infotainment unit failed again so the fix did not work.

I have narrowed it down to a very specific set of circumstances now and also ruled out my phone as I used a different one.

It seems it will fail between 2 to 2-1/2 hours of navigating use if the unit is also playing music via the USB slots and a memory stick. If the radio only is used it will function ok.

I have tried it on an Android and iPhone now - same results.

I'll be contacting customer services again tomorrow about it.

Interesting, we had similar with our Mk8 Golf but in our case an OTA software update fixed it. This was about 18 months ago though.

We use USB and memory stick all the time but we only use the Nav very occasionally.

To be clear on the Nav thing, are you using the phone's Nav or the car Nav?

On my end I have another appointment with my dealer this Friday I will report back with what happened.

In my case it does fail sometimes with just Spotify playing and no phone navigation.

The most annoying thing is I have to bring video evidence because there is no fault code in the head unit. There debugging / logging in there infotainment system is a joke.

Phone nav as car does not have it built in, i use Google Maps

Ah, I never use the phone, always use the built in Nav. Maybe this is the root of the issue given that you said about not having a problem if just listening to radio.

Maybe but thats what its designed for. This model does not have any built in sat-nav sadly.

Head office have escalated the issue.
