MIB2/Apple CarPlay upgrade

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I have a 2015 Octavia with a Columbus(?) head unit and MIB1 unit in the glovebox. I’d like to upgrade so I can use Apple CarPlay. Can anyone supply a coded control unit so it’s plug and play at my end?

Thanks

Joe

Hi Pab567,

TMBKK**************

Thanks

So now you have Columbus MIB1, with Bluetooth, without DAB, part number 5E0035845C, with USB 5Q0035726C and fortunately you don't have CANTON sound system.

You can install one of four different OEM glove box units:

- MIB2 Bolero

- MIB2 Amundsen

- MIB2 Columbus

- MIB2.5 Columbus

You don't need to replace display unit unless you want to switch to Columbus MIB2.5 as it works only with display 5E0919606D.

As you want to use Apple CarPlay then you also have to replace USB port.

The question is what is your budget and which of listed below features are "must have":

- Video playback from DVD, USB, SD

- CD playback

- OEM navigation

- displaying OEM maps in Virtual Cluster (Active Info Display).

All units support SmartLink (Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, MirrorLink), rear view camera, voice command. features that differ them:

- MIB2 Bolero - no OEM navigation, no CD/DVD drive, no video playback from SD/USB

- MIB2 Amundsen - OEM navigation, no CD/DVD drive, no video playback from SD/USB, support for displaying OEM maps in Active Info Display (Virtual Cluster)

- MIB2 Columbus - OEM navigation, CD/DVD drive, video playback from SD/USB, no support for displaying OEM maps in Active Info Display (Virtual Cluster)

- MIB2.5 Columbus - OEM navigation, CD/DVD drive, video playback from SD/USB, support for displaying OEM maps in Active Info Display (Virtual Cluster)

Wow, thanks for the thorough response.

I suppose all I want is MIB2 Columbus as I don’t want to lose anything I already have. I just want CarPlay as the only additional feature.

What sort of price am I looking at?

Thanks

Joe

You dont need e New Display for mib2 when you have the 8" Screen mib1

Wireless solutions are nice, but they are a real battery drain on longer journeys.

@Cairus I know about that diplsey. But this is the cheapest and most functional option. I don't know anyone who would complain about battery drain. Do you have any facts about that? I've already installed several dozen of them in different cars.

It makes no difference whether it's an OEM wireless system or an aftermarket one. Imagine a 3-8 hour road trip where your smartphone might be in the Qi charging pad. The phone will definitely overheat. Even an iPhone can't handle it. Plus, you have to find a place for the extra module so it's not visually obtrusive. If you buy the MIB2 standard navigation system cheaply, you're looking at between €180 and €250. Even someone with two left hands can activate it. Of course, the OEM solution requires a diagnostic tool. Usually, you also need a new USB port, which, complete with wiring harness, costs less than €30 on AliExpress. My customers have always opted for the OEM solution. But it's good that there are alternatives.

Yes, the factory option is ideal. But customers choose for themselves. I install what everyone wants. Activating and removing component protection and customization are not a problem. Circumstances are different everywhere, and not everyone can afford the original option of displaying the image from a mobile device on the display.

Hey @pab567 ,

Sorry to piggyback on this thread. Going to inherit my dads 2015 Octavia really soon not sure what capabilities the current head unit has if you (or anyone) can help it will be greatly appreciated!

It is MIB1 Amundsen - no Android Auto, no Apple CarPlay, no more fresh maps available.

@pab567 Would the process in getting a apple car play compatible system be a big job/very costly?

Pls share VIN in PM so I can check details of your car configuration.

@pab567 New account can’t pm, can you? Thank you
