ECO Mode and Fuel consumption

Featured Replies

I have a 2023 2.0 TSI Sportline, so I don't expect amazing mpg, but I have to say I'm pretty impressed after 1 year of ownership. To date in 6000 miles it is 35 mpg - pretty much what Skoda show on the spec sheet for my car. Around 75% of my usage is short distance 4-5 miles locally the rest is longer journeys on 70 mph major roads when the average is around 45 mpg. Yesterday I decided to try ECO mode on a 120 mile round trip. Going was 50/50 mix of single carriageway A roads, town centre traffic and Motorway; recorded 45 mpg, return journey 80% motorway 49.5 mpg, typically driving at 60 to 70 mph. I did not use cruise control but did use the speed limiter and coast mode kicked in most times whenever I lifted off the accelerator.

My previous 2.0 TDI DSG Touran used to average around 60 mpg on that journey, using V-Power diesel, the Karoq runs on Shell E10 Unleaded - negligible cost difference for fuel.

I can't find documented anywhere what ECO mode actually does, but my impression was that it seems to start off in 2nd more, that it stays in 6th and 7th longer and is happy to run at at 1100/1200 rpm in both those gears when normally it would have changed down at around 1500 rpm. I also noticed that the Soundaktor is quieter too.

I had a run, from Mansfield to Woking, mainly M1, M25, then local roads. Managed 65mpg, but only 60mpg on return (Friday afternoon traffic). My usual usage is short local trips, and only 5000 miles in two years, with 35mpg since new. Had it set on Eco, but a bit sluggish responding when lane changing, so left in normal. Plenty of seventh gear indicated. 1.5 DSG petrol.

Impressive……….45 - 55 is all our 1.5 manages and I thought that was good!

Yes, 55 is about the best I can get out of my 1.5 DSG on a run down to Devon. Mostly motorway cruising at 70mph.

Must say, I was amazed. Did fill up with super grade, by accident, as if that would make any difference to mpg.

I use E5 all the time in my 280 but a tankful in the Karoq 1.5 made no difference apart from costing me £4 more…! 🙂

With any discussion re mpg presumably the really good figures are with the aircon off.

Aircon on might make any difference or noticeable difference on efficiency / fuel consumption if say set for a 18*oC temp and it is about an 18*oC ambient.

Ambient temp and humidity can make a difference to MPG.

As can cooling or heating of the interior.

But then cold outside is less traction / friction maybe roads, and denser air into the engine.

20 Plus Degree C day times up north & near freezing nights is a good time for comparing economy doing the same trips at the same speeds.

We are on Summer Formulation Diesel & Petrol now in the UK.

On my experimentation (1.9TDi 110 Elegance) a whole 0.1 mpg delta (out of about 60mpg) on a flat road.

I tired using Eco Mode on a trip down to Devon. Drove there on Eco Mode, drove back in Normal (well Individual mode as in that I have switched off the stupid 'Soundakor'). MPG was virtually the same the only difference was the far worse engine response in Eco Mode.

Haven't bothered with Eco Mode since. Or Sport Mode for that matter.
