Super Estate Tailgate Problems

Featured Replies

The electric tailgate has stated to malfunction. Using the key fob, rear catch or internal button it behaves very erratically.

Sometimes reluctant to open but mainly opens then stops about a quarter open and when restarted stops again part way up. Plus a multitude of variations.

I have reset the upper limit several times. sometimes it works OK for a couple of cycles then reverts to part opening. The struts don't seem to have any tight spots when manually moving the tailgate and I have given them some WD40.

Any ideas?

I have the same issue. Interested to find out also.

My money is on broken wiring harness at the hinge point.

I had considered that having had it occur on a BMW estate some years ago. The only thing that perhaps contradicts this is the random nature of the occurrence and the fact that sometimes after reset of the opening height it works for a few goes.

I'm going to take it to an auto electrician's next week.

I had the same issue. Seems to be a common issue. Needsreplacement hydraulic rams. They are about £130 a pair on eBay, and take about 10 mins tops to switch over

Thanks very much. Do you have to buy a pair?

I would buy the pair. As it's difficult to determine which is faulty. You could buy the pair, and switch them over one at a time and find out which side is faulty, and keep the working one as a spare

Thanks Deed. I will do that as it really isn't worth the hassle. Cheers

I have been hospitalised recently but prior to that I replaced both struts and subsequently the problem virtually disappeared. There were occasional malfunctions then more recently the old problems returned. I noticed that the tailgate button did not respond at all so replaced it. That momentarily seemed to change things bet never proper function and now it is a nightmare. does not open arm close properly. The warning beeps seem to work when to is closing properly but most of the time closes quietly then stops part open/closed.

Does anyone know if there is a control unit somewhere in the circuit. I can't imagine there is an intelligent chip in the struts?
