Mechatronic repair recommendation?

Featured Replies

Hi, I've had a mechatronic unit failure on my 2018 Octavia Scout, diagnosed by my local VW specialist as a problem with 'TRANSMISSION VALVE 3' - it fails their test programme on this every time. Car not really driveable (stuck in 2nd, no reverse)

I thought a good solution would be to get Mechatronic unit removed, and send off to ECU Testing, but I've spoken to several garages who all said the same thing 'don't do it!' due to 'fixed' units not working correctly. They won't do the removal/refit for that reason. I found another similar company called 'Control Units' in Devon who also do repairs, and have good reviews. The offer a 'drive in, drive out' service. Just awaiting likely total cost. Has anyone used them, or can recommend a similar company please?

I'm thinking it would be wise to get fixed under one roof, as local garages aren't keen to get involved with removal and refit of units, and there's a question mark over the post-fitment re-coding or reinitialisation.

New mechatronic supplied+ fitted is around £3,500 but my car has done 147k and is only worth about £5-6k as private sale. Was thinking of selling anyway so not keen to throw this much at it, as it has a few other issues that need sorting too.. Alternative is sale to webuyanycar or Copart as a non-runner.

Any advice welcome. Thanks

I'm assuming it is a DQ381-A 7 Speed automatic....or is it a DQ250-A 6 speed gearbox?

Mechatronic units do fail, but the reason why the local garages are not wanting to place nicely is that they are concerned about 'come-backs'.

Honestly - get the mechatronic unit repaired; it will be a solenoid failure. Probably worth getting all the solenoid's replaced. Speak to the repair people first; get fresh fluids and filters put on the system. If you are also feeling flush, it might also be a good time to get new clutches installed too....and as to the garages worrying about it; just tell them that you take responsibility.

Thanks for your reply, it's the 6 speed so I assume DQ250.

Local garages won't touch it if they haven't supplied the part, understandable I guess, the last person to touch it always gets blamed for any problems, much like computers!

Basically I'm ready to sell the car for whatever I can get for it...unless repair cost is reasonable in relation to it's full value as a working car. The other issue is a 'main seal' oil leak which I'm told needs doing soon and is quoted at £900 (inc cambelt) so it's turning into a money pit..

@Jonbaker Are you only speaking to local garages and not an Auto gearbox Specialist who,s daily bread might not be DSG,s but they can do them, all the gear and more than ideas.

They will know who they use for refurbish / repairs on MCU,s ECU, etc.

No, I've spoken to quite a few DSG specialists, they all say they just replace mechatronics, not repair. Apart from Control Units and ECU Testing.

My local Automatic Gearbox specialist does repairs with the likes of actuators (DQ200s.) and MCU,s get sent for testing.

I see you are very far south in the UK and maybe people there just splash the cash for new.

If it's the DQ250 then the Solenoids N215 (Reverse and odd numbered gear's) and the N216 (Even gears) can be sticky and eventually fail.

Depending how handy you are you can drop the gearbox oil, pop the mech cover off and carefully swap these two out in location.

Some threads floating about of the Golf guys doing similar and it resolving a lot of jerky pull aways and heavy handed gear shifts.

Parts including seals are about £200+ Oil.

The rest of the process is like a DSG service, refill, start engine, move gear selector through all gears, warm up trans fluid, drain excess, reset all adaptation with VCDS or OBD11 etc.

Thanks for the advice, I think that would be beyond my skill set but useful to know what the issue might be.

Hi I paid 1500 cash on a 2011 1.8tsi octavia, DQ200. Yes you need a specialist. I chose a guy in Preston, had one on the shelf only took 3days all good
