Karoq wheel change?

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I have just bought a 2024 Karoq Sportline which I love, however the ride is a little hard and I've already scuffed the alloys on the curb!

It currently has 19" wheels and I was wondering on whether I could change them to 17" or 18".

The dealership has said -

"We have spoken to our technicians and it has been advised that swapping the wheels for smaller ones is not advisable.

By swapping the wheels it could have a negative effect on the affect speedo, gearbox, transfer boxes."

Does this sound right? Can anyone on here give me some advice?

Thanks in advance ☺️

Have a wee look for the many similar threads.

There is a very recent one.

They talk rubbish, the recommended tyres / wheels for use with snow chains are smaller.

Type Approved sizes can be used.

The person you talked to is very poorly informed, Karoq comes with multiple wheel sizes, but the outside diameter is virtually same as tyre is deeper.

Have a look at this brochure, has all the wheels (and the tyre sizes to go with them). They should be available through the parts Dept (but probably cheaper to get the tyres separately as lot of competition for tyres)

Have a look at your tyre pressure sticker (either on inside of fuel flap, or on inside of front door jam, drivers or passenger side), might even give multiple wheel sizes, if it does then car is already certified for the sizes listed.

Its now on inside of rear driver side door jam, and it does give pressures for multiple wheel/tyre sizes

Out of the standard Karoq front wheel drive wheel sizes 215/60R16 6Jx16 ET43 5/112 57.1 would give the best ride and by far the best protection from kerbing damage.

The Karoq 4x4 uses the same specification rims as the Karoq front wheel drive, but the Karoq 4x4 uses slightly bigger tyres, eg. 225/60R16 vs 215/60R16.

All-season tyres are often suggested as being a bit softer than a typical summer tyre. Someone on one of the Karoq Facebook groups has just reported fitting Pirelli Cinturato 225/40/19 in place of the same size Bridgestone & very pleased with the result.

But that's a circa £650 investment & isn't going to do anything to protect the wheels.

My SEL Edition came with 215/50/18 Nexen & they seem OK. But if you're going to make the change for comfort, 16 or 17 would be preferable.

You can fit 225/R45 x 19 tyres which will improve things a bit.

Officially they are for the 4x4 version, which has slightly different suspension and ground clearance, they are not a homologated size on 2wd versions.

If you modify the vehicle to non approved, then need to inform insurers etc.

I put Cross Climate2s on my Sportline and they give an excellent ride. I do have the 4x4 so with the R45 not R40 tyres and the multilink suspension.

The 2WD Sportlines do appear to have a harsher ride.

My 2 wheel drive came with 18 inch wheels, from new in 2023. There was a short period when this size was fitted in place of 19 inch by Skoda. No complaints regarding ride comfort.

When it comes to ride comfort, 215/50R18 fitted to a 7" rim width is in a different league compared to the hard riding 225/40R19 fitted to an 8" rim width.

To get the 215/50R18 to ride as hard as the 225/40R19 on the front wheel drive Karoq, you would need to overinflate the 215/50R18 by about 9psi.

Considering it's easy to notice the ride get harder with just a 3psi increase in tyre pressure, a 9psi increase is very large indeed.
