Bouncy and Unsettling ride

Featured Replies

I have my car booked in with Skoda next week, explaining that there appears to be a noise when going over sleeping policemen etc.

But will they know/be able to fix the unsettling nature that the car bounces when are low or high speeds, in the middle it seems to be Ok, 10mph over a sleeping policeman and it bounces a few times afterwards, also at speed on the motorway the rear feels unsettled.

Are these the gripes that others have reported previously with the fix being B6 or similar being fitted?

When I got my 2017 Sportline approx. 5 years ago it was bouncy going over bumps and leaned quite a bit in corners. I changed the four shocks to Koni Special Actives. I got them from Autodoc. Fitting then totally transformed the handling of the car. I've seen other posts regarding fitting either B4's or B6's and them making a big change.

Had front and rear shocks replaced with OEM as mine felt the same; fronts were done a couple of months ago (with springs and top mounts). Rears (shocks only) were done just before Christmas and it feels so much better than it did before.

Mine was wallowy, bouncy and felt like a ferry, but all that’s gone now, and still feels comfortable.

It doesn’t look cool, but the car’s sitting noticeably about 1-2cm higher all round (I could really see the front looking high before the rear was done!), and with a boot full, the rear wheels don’t disappear into the arches any more!

Noise will be a bush - could be a bush in the lower control arms or the mounting bushes on the front anti-roll bars.

Do you have DCC? If so, then this is perfectly characteristic of normal and comfort. Sport will be better.

There are a number of replacement items that you can put on, be it Bilstein, Koni, KW et al.

Was wondering if it was bushes

Don’t have the DCC shocks, so no way to change otherwise would be in sport all the time

So is yours non DCC, are the replacement shocks still monroe?

Its not clear who non-DCC definitely are made by, but it does look like Monroe are only associated with DCC.

Non-DCC is much better for aftermarket options - that is to say they exceed the performance of the standard ones.

Mine’s non-DCC.

Sachs on the front, and as they could only get Monroe at the time, those are on the rear.

I’d rather have had the same but as they are both reasonable brands and OEM spec I wasn’t that bothered, and they’ll outlast my time of owning the car.

I have just fitted Monroe non-DCC shocks on the front after 96000 miles - they are a vast improvement, firming up the ride, and helping to eliminate the front wheel tramp on quick take off. Bought on eBay for £104 the pair, delivered the next day. Rear shocks were done last year after MOT tester noted they were leaking, so these were probably some generic make.

Thanks for the replies, so worth still getting the dealer to have a look, bought from them and has warranty with them also

See what they say, car has done 75k

I've just replaced the standard rear springs on my 2015 Superb 280 DCC-equipped estate with Eibach R21706 items, as one of the originals cracked all the way through and I figured I may as well try some slightly stiffer springs than stock in an effort to quell the boat-like rear.

It's a considerable improvement on the original springs IMO. I was a bit worried that going up a whole 1mm from the original 12.5mm spec to 13.5mm spring thickness would be a bit much (the new ones should in theory be 36% stiffer), but it now feels really good to me. NB: You may well want less stiff ones on a non-4x4 / non-estate model with less weight over the rear.

Thanks for the reply, mine is an Estate non 4x4

Had 2 front sets of monroe fail after around 60- 70k

Hate them now ...used to be good but id get Bilston any day now.

One of my DCC Monroe shocks started weeping oil at 28k.

Took it as an opportunity to replace everything for a Bilstein coilover setup and should last for years now.

I have cancelled the appointment for tomorrow as found out I would be charged if its out side of the extended warranty (£165) which just after Christmas is a little much.

Had a good chat with them over the phone whilst cancelling and seems I will see if i can check the state of the shocks before going further with them, as they wouldn't have a car to compare against to get a true understanding of what is happening.

When I mentioned about the Bilsteins then this would of course means everything is then outside of their extended warranty, as they don't have anything to compare against nor have heard of this before I think I might need to confirm the issue a little better before hand, shame really as not had the car that long which they were fully understanding with and wouldn't charge me until it was deemed that the extended warranty didn't cover or there wasn't an issue.

I think the behaviour you have is normal for the Superb with standard suspension without DCC unfortunately.

Mine is from 2023 & I have 3 big speed bumps outside my house.

At low speeds it's like being in a bouncy castle, midspeed it's not as bad and a bit faster feels like you bottomed out the suspension when you enter or leave.

I also have the same kind of creaking noise from the front suspension when the weather is cold & I go over the speed bumps.

It disappears when the car is warm but comes back el again each morning.

I had the same creaking noise on my Octavia after around 7 years & was a bit disappointed to have it on the superb after 2.

Usually when I take the Octavia for a service the garage greases something and the problem disappears until the next winter.

However for the Superb, I'll be asking them if there's something better they can do under warranty.

I have been under the car this morning, just to have a look myself.

The rear shocks appear to be ZF made, so possibly Sachs based? With the near side having a new bolt and nut at the base of the assembly where it attaches to the wishbone.

Part number for both are 3Q0513049FN which look up to be the correct for the rear of a 2wd.

Not able to see the spring colours on the rear but the front has Blue and White rings

So you think that one may have been replaced?

Have I missed the age and mileage...? Reasonable age/mileage to have gone through a shock already?

I am not sure, but a new shiny bolt and nut would lend itself, but then again the other side seems to have the same type or grime/dirt etc but that bolt/nut is old

It's a 2018 plate with 75k on the clock

Right I am almost decided to change the shocks on the Superb

Now I have seen some have gone down the B4 route over the B6, with still having warranty I am wanting to keep within specs but I understand that the B4 is still 10% stiffer

Is this correct and is it worth it or should I just spend the extra and do the B6?

Definitely do the top mounts at the same time.

Do you mean Superpro lower control arms? They won’t solve the bush issue if it’s the anti roll bar bushes.

Ok will do the tops mounts also then

Ahh that’s true might leave them out of it for now

Thanks
