High Beam Light Assist

Featured Replies

I never really trusted High Beam Assist , but I find it useful when I forget to dip my beams - I've had them in other cars - my Merc Eclass being the most reliable! When I set HBA, under streety lighting lights remain on dipped, when out of sreet lighting main beams comes on, approaching headlights (even high intensity and doing more that 30kmph)? - Nothing! still on high beam! Go back to street lighting - switches to dipped! Bloody Useless!

This is the crystal LED matrix lights? If so, then it doesn’t switch everything down to dipped headlights, it switch off small sections of the high beam. Which also moves as the car’s heading towards you move. It’s really clever.

I’ve sat behind a mate on the motorway with it on and he said it didn’t notice at all.

The HBA on mine (MY17) is flawless and responds great.

Above 30 and out of street lighting the high beam is supposed to stay on even with oncoming traffic. It adjusts the position of the beam so as to light the road ahead with maximum effect, but while controlling the position of the focus away from the oncoming vehicle.

You should see the light drop along with the oncoming vehicle, and then raise again once it has passed.

I find mine to be of great value during the dark winter months, and it works flawlessly.

Thanks guys! You learn something new even at my advanced years!

Works perfectly on our 2016 (oh wow - it’s 10 years old!!) 280!

Hi , My C207E400 headlights ( had the dogs system ) were excellent and unfortunately the Bi-xenon are terrible ( not sure about the spelling ) on my Superb.

It's really lucky I hardly drive my car at night.

That’s the best explanation and demo I’ve seen, it should be in the actual on line car manual!

Skoda Superb Facelift Matrix LED.

On our last Volvo XC90 the high been assist was "always on" by default...

It was a pleasant suprise that the superb system worked just as well

I still tend to stay away from keeping Auto full beam on but I've wondered why not - am I behind the curve on that one?

I notice that on normal Full Beam, pulling the stalk switches them off but on Auto Full Beam pulling the stalk just flashes as normal (you have to push forward again to switch to normal Full Beam and then pull to switch off) - so they're probably designed to just be on Auto Full Beam all the time

I'm glad it's not just my car.

I replaced the D2S bulbs with Osram super-duper Nightbreakers because I thought the old bulbs were done, and the halogen candles on my wife's Smart are still better than the Superb's Xenons!

I watched a video the other day about cleaning the lenses and reflectors to improve light output on Xenons, but that was on an American truck which was done with lights in situ...I'm not about to start removing the bumper and headlights to take a punt on cleaning the headlight internals on the Superb...unless anybody else has done it and found an improvement.

Hi cubbyq

In a word No - I have accepted the headlights are terrible.

I believe any improvement would be slight.

If you consider changing the headlights bulbs remember to enquire prior to an MOT test that your car would pass the test.

The pre-facelift mk3 Superb Bi-xenon uses D3S bulbs, not D2S.

The Superb Bi-Xenon headlights r really good, when aimed properly.

If u have a broken levelling sensor, ur headlights will simply point downwards.

This is footage when I had D3S xenon bulbs before....

This is footage recently after I replaced the xenon bulb with D3S LED bulb.

Hi JR RS ,

Well your pre head light video is light years ( sorry re pun ) performance makes by beam looks like candles on a windy night.

The Skoda dealer has checked the settings are they tell the the beams are perfect.

I am not an bird watcher ( feathered type ) but at night I can see birds sat on the tree branches !

To me the lights look as if they are 6 volt system.

Thanks @JR RS , apologies for getting the bulb type incorrect!

Hmm, maybe I should have a go a levelling the lights; they do the up/down/side-to-side dance on startup, but the beam distance is just short, and to be honest, I don't think I have the perceived light output of your first video!

When I start the car, the bulbs warm up and change colour as expected and are mega-bright shining on the sides of the cars opposite my drive, but in actual driving they are rubbish; I had a 2010 Volvo XC70 a few years ago with the steering Xenons and they were fantastic!

Where are the adjustment screws to raise the beam?

Thanks,

Nick

Replacement xenon bulbs in a xenon headlight cluster will be fine because the cluster has the associated lens and levelling adjustment.

Xenon bulbs retrofitted to a halogen cluster is a no-no purely because of the lack of the required tech.

Either way, it was on here recently that an MOT tech is not allowed to remove parts on the vehicle and therefore they cannot remove the rear cover to look at the bulb. They shouldn’t need to to see in a halogen cluster as it’s obvious looking from the front.

LED bulbs were previously not E-marked and therefore not legal but there is a post on here with a link to an e-marked unit so perfectly legal in UK.

Have a read here on how to adjust the beam height.

I posted a pic there showing which nut to turn.

E-marked LED bulbs plug and play to Xenon clusters. UK road legal according to all the MOT regs and articles I can find.

My experience with the auto headlights was that it seems to rely too heavily on the quality of lights coming at you.

Does the opposing vehicle have similarly blinding bright white LED headlights? If yes, the auto function will switch off your full beam straight away.

Is the opposing vehicle a vintage motorcycle with a single headlamp putting out barely any more soft smudged yellow light than the average candle? The Skoda does not recognise it at all and does nothing.

Holy thread resurrection, Batman!

I took a photo yesterday morning, just after 5am, as Mrs Cubbington was driving and wanted to get an idea of the light output, as it was looking pretty good, and she never complains about the lights being dim.

Take the pic with a pinch of salt, as iPhones do over-expose dark images, but I was pleased that the standard beam wasn't any worse than a lot of the other vehicles - it was only vehicles with LED lights that were much brighter...my last three cars have had LED headlights, so I think my issues have been just getting used to how much of a difference there is between the two technologies!

I retrofitted HBA to my old SII and it worked really well.

I have Matrix LED lights in the SIII now and they are excellent except for when we travel with tourist mode / continental driving turned on that it seems to be unable to blank the oncoming card on the left hand side and I get flashed by lorries and buses. My HBA is coded to be on all the time if the light switch is on Auto.
